Editor’s Note Dear Readers, It is my pleasure to make available this issue of NIDA Journal of Language and Communication (NIDAJLC), ranked in the first tier of Thai Journal Citation Index or TCI. The journal disseminates information of interest to language teachers, those in the field of communication, and others interested in language and communication. Each article presents information on theories, research studies, methods, and ideas related to language teaching and learning as well as communication. Readers familiar with prior volumes of the journal will notice that this issue features new editorial board members who are from a wide range of areas of expertise and represent the combined interdisciplinary fields of language and communication. Most notably, the journal publishes manuscripts written in English only and each volume consists of two issues (June and December) per year. Articles are made available free for all on the website of the Graduate School of Language and Communication at the time of publication. In this issue, the first article in EFL by Dr. William Egerton Darling and Natthapong Chanyoo reveals that the effect of the L2 Motivational Self-System Components on Thai undergraduate students’ L2 willingness to communicate depends on whether the students have extended experience in an English-speaking context. The study provides possible explanations behind Thai university students’ lack of L2 willingness to communicate as well as hinting at potential solutions to improve it. Since its inception in the 1970s, communicative language teaching, or CLT, has served as a major source of influence on language teaching practice around the world. Many of the issues raised by a communicative teaching methodology are still relevant today, though teachers who are relatively new to the profession may not be familiar with them. Another study by Natthawut Promtara and Dr. Kasma Suwanarak therefore serves to review what Thai EFL teachers and students have learned from CLT what its relevance as a current practice in the context of their study. Reading motivation is the topic of Poowadol Srimalee and Dr. Sasima Charubusp’s article. The author provides the interesting idea of using Reader’s Theatre as an instructional strategy for improving students’ reading fluency and motivation in different aspects. The study reveals that once students have high motivation in the aspects of self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation, they can potentially gain development in other aspects of reading such as reading fluency, word recognition skill, and reading comprehension. In the article of Dr. Pornpavee Sukrutrit, conversation analysis is used to investigate how speakers of English as a foreign language converse and the aspects of English- language learning used in voice-based chat rooms. The author reports that knowing some aspects of the real English interaction in voice-based chat rooms can help keep both language teachers and students up to date with various forms of instruction taking place via new technology, instead of relying solely on textbooks. Last but not least, thanks to Dr. Sarut Supasiraprapa for his contribution of a review of Understanding, Evaluating, and Conducting Second Language Writing Research by Charlene Polio and Debra Friedman. The publication takes readers to the rapidly growing area of second language writing by presenting a uniquely balanced approach to L2 writing research. It is wide-ranging in scope and does not privilege one approach over the other, illuminating the strengths of a qualitative approach and a quantitative approach and the ways in which they might supplement each other. I believe that it will be a valuable resource for all readers in related fields. This issue could not be possible without the good cooperation of reviewers taking time from their crowded schedules to provide constructive feedback on each manuscript, and I deeply appreciate their contributions. Hopefully, you will find the articles intellectually valuable for your academic and professional goals. Historical studies of various musics of the world have appeared wherever there are such documents: Europe, China, Japan, Korea, India, and in the Islamic cultural area of Western Asia and North Africa. Mainland Southeast Asia, however, has remained much of a musico-historical void since little has remained besides oral traditions and a few stone carvings, although Vietnamese music is an exception to this statement. The fact that these countries have so few trained musicologists also contributes to the lack of research. In the case of the Kingdom of Thailand, known before 1932 as Siam, little has been attempted in the way of music history in languages other than Thai, and those in Thai, also not plentiful, remain unknown to the outside world.l Only the European-trained Prince Damrong has attempted a comprehensive history, but it is based as much on tradition and conjecture as on concrete evidence and is besides quite brief. David Morton's classic study of Thai traditional music, The Traditional Music of Thailand, includes some eighteen pages of history, mostly based on oral traditions, conjecture, circumstantial evidence from neighboring musical cultures (Cambodia, China, and India), and some from the same documents used in this study. At least three reasons can be given for the lack of historical materials originating in Thailand.

Background and Motivation • For library cataloging, there is a guideline for preparing romanization: –ALA-LC Romanization Tables: Transliteration Schemes for Non-Roman Scripts, which is approved by the Library of Congress and the American Library Association. –ALA-LC is a set of standards for romanization, or the representation of text in other writing systems using the Latin alphabet.     Editorial It is my pleasure to inform our readers that NIDA Journal of Language and Communication has recently been placed in Thai-Journal Citation Index Centre (TCI)’s tier 1 in May 2015. This national assessment was intended to provide the standardized evaluation of Thailand-based academic journals and to ensure that listed journals meet a strict set of quality assessment criteria. This achievement reflects our long-term commitment to make this journal an academic space addressing the interplay between language and communication. All five articles selected for this issue represent the current research interests on language and communication. Jantarawan Samransamruajkit’s article - Factor Analysis of Polite Refusal Strategies in Multicultural Corporations - investigates seven politeness strategies in refusal situations among 200 Western and Asian employees working for 22 multicultural corporations in Thailand. She posits that while indirectness is mainly used by all of her informants, norms and society are two most important factors influencing different types of politeness strategies employed by the informants. Aimed to examine jealous expressions and face saving strategies employed by Thai heterosexual couples, Chayapa Srivilas and Jaray Singhakowinta’s paper - Gender Differences in Face Concerns and Behavioral Responses to Romantic Jealousy - provides a research model to analyze if gender influences romantic couples’ face saving strategies and communicative responses to jealousy. Their findings reveal that men than women have reported to be concerned about other-face saving in jealous experience. Ketkanda Jaturongkachoke and Supamit Chanseawrassamee’s article - Decipherment or Whole Language Approach: Empirical Evidence – survey students of an academic English reading course at a graduate school in Thailand whether they prefer “decipherment” or “whole language”.

Reversibility of romanization systems1 Introduction Romanization systems, i.e. systems for rendering non-Roman elements in Roman script, are created for multiple purposes and therefore it would be impossible to work out universal requirements. In bibliographic records, e.g., it would be important to render all the nuances of the original script, and therefore stringent transliterations, approved by ISO, are used. Romanization systems for names, however, whether personal or geographical names, tend to be more oriented towards practical needs, contending with more or less satisfactory pronunciation of names. In non-Roman scripts where one and the same sound is spelled with different characters, these characters are often romanized with the same Roman equivalent as well. It seems that there are two important questions that we need to ask when evaluating every romanization system: 1) how well does the system represent phonological features of the language? (phonological appropriateness) and 2) how well does the system represent graphical features of the language? (reversibility criterion). Most of the United Nations approved romanization systems for geographical names represent quite adequately the phonological structure of the source language, omitting only features that are difficult to reproduce in other languages context (for example, tones in Chinese or Thai names).

TI The six United Natio~sConferences on the §t~~~~~di~ationof Geographical Names (convened in 1967, 1972, 15177/ 1982, 3987 and 1992) have adopted 152 resolutions. Under the guidance of ax de lic~seler,former Secretary of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geogra hica'i Names (UNGEGN), the resolutions of the first four conferences were grouped iuad er general subject headings, and documented for the Fifth Conference held in Montreal ira 1987. Following that conference, the Secretariat of the Chnadiaxa Permanent Committee on Geographical Names conipiled a compendium to include all the resolutions of the first five conferences. In the second hadition, resolutions from the Sixth Conference held in New York in 1992 were added. To make this reference volume as useful as possible, footnotes and references were updated to facilitate consultation, and a table was iricliided to indicate under which subject heading each resolution can e fousid.
