President’s Corner Tim Lyons

Welcome to Season 2013-14. I hope training is going well and that your performances are better than you expect at this stage.

The Club has already enjoyed tremendous success in the "off" season with a number of our athletes competing at an international level and a great team (including 4 of your committee...obviously not me) attending the Uni Games on the Gold Coast. We recently dug deep into the pool of Little A's talent to field some successful teams in the State U18 relays. I recently attended the UWA Sports Awards dinner to see Cruz Hogan receive a full Blue for his efforts over the last 12 months.

Off the track, the Friends of UWA hosted the 85th Anniversary Dinner at the Floreat Bowls Club. Many past glories were re-visited and re-created. A highlight was the presentation of a Life Membership by Men's Club Captain, Tom Kozak, to Don Young in recognition of his service to the Club over many decades. (see the complete Don Young story below).

The season's social programme kicked off recently with a BBQ at the AJ Pavillion. I would encourage you to continue supporting the committee's efforts. They know it's is important to balance a strict training regime with a healthy social programme, so make sure you make time for these events.

The next opportunity to mix business with pleasure will be at the Big 6/Little A's Twilight Carnival on Friday, 13 December at McGillivray Oval. There will be the usual 1000m, 300m,60m, and javelin interspersed with similar events for the juniors. There will be a bar open when you want a rest from the Bouncy Castle and to prepare yourself for the DJ.

I hope to see you there.

10 UWA Little Athletics Update By Nadine Talcon

The UWA Little Athletics season has started very well. The first competition day for the season was made more interesting with the rain. The athletes didn’t seem to mind. It was challenging however for the parent helpers, especially those recording on to soggy paper!

There were 4 club records broken at the first competition.

• Callum Jacobsen U14B Javelin 47.87m • Ailish Dey U14G 29.29m • Adam Komatsu U15B 200m Hurdles 26.79 Sec • Ben Chamberlain 16B 1500m 4min 12.87 Sec. • Callum went on to break his own record the second week he threw.

Queens Baton Relay

UWA LAC were very lucky to have a visit from 3 Commonwealth Games Gold Medallists at training-Christine Stanton, Kylie Wheeler and Ben Offereins. They visited McGillivray Oval with the baton being carried around the world in the Queens baton relay. They signed autographs and interacted with our young athletes as well as showing their gold medals. The athletes were able to see the Queen's Baton up close and some very lucky athletes got to participate in a "Mile Relay" carrying the Queen's Baton. It was a great experience for everyone involved.

Club Captains

Congratulations to Owen Coates and Rose Connell, UWA Little Athletics Club Captains.

Both Owen and Rose are long standing members of UWA. Owen is a State

11

championship medallist and was one of the first picked to represent the club at the recent Friendship Games in Shanghai where he fully engaged in the training and competition opportunities offered. He trains and competes at 100 % and is a terrific example to his colleagues and younger athletes. Rose is from a long line of contributors from the Connell family. Rose has competed at State and national levels for a number of years in middle distance events and has been a keen cross country runner

since U 7s. Both these athletes are worthy holders of these positions and we wish them the best of luck in the coming season.

12 Australian University Games By Alice Hall

12 athletes, one week, one track, one dream and one mighty green machine.

The annual Australian University Games welcomed 12 UWA track and field athletes to the wonderfully warm and irresistibly laidback Gold Coast for a week of tough competition, hot weather and good old- fashioned fun.

The Games held every year provides athletes with the opportunity to compete against some of the best track and field athletes in the country, challenge themselves and their personal bests and to create sound friendships, whilst representing your university. This year’s team led by Keely Waters aka “mum” and the ever-vigilant Tom Kozak, produced some amazing performances in the hot conditions.

Highlights included Cruz Hogan’s impressive gold medal in the men’s Javelin, Wesley Salisbury bronze medal feat in the decathlon, and the women’s team Keely Waters, Janay Hendriks, Jess Jason and Alice Hall) coming home with bronze medals in both the medley relay and the 4x100m relay – a surprising yet very well deserved effort for the underdogs.

Congratulations to all the athletes that competed and represented UWA athletics at the games, it was a week enjoyed by everyone and one that will be talked about fondly for years to come.

14 Changes to Strive Track and Field Competition Registration Process

Athletics WA Announcement

This year with the new registration process we will be able to provide you with your race / competition information prior to the competition time. The new process will be very similar to our current State Championship registration process. No longer will you be require to entry at the ‘Rego desk’ other than on one occasion to collect your competition number.

The new competition process is:

• Enter online by 7pm the night before competition & pay your competition fee • A provisional start list & final timetable will be published by 10am the morning of the competition • Marshall for your event and your details will already be with the event officials • During this season only: Late/on day entries will be accepted at the registration room (no later than 45min before event start time) but will incur an additional $5 late fee. Athletes entering track events will be put into the last heat. Following seasons further late entry penalties will apply. • Scratchings: An athlete who does not scratch 45 minutes prior to the event start time will not and should not compete in any more track events that day. Regardless, any results both field or track after the incorrect withdrawal from an event will be not sanctioned or recognised. This has been implemented to ensure and maintained the integrity of programming both for athletes and spectators. All scratchings / withdrawals must be recorded at the ‘Rego room’ • Seed/performance marks: When you enter online, you will need to enter a seed/performance mark. This must be your season’s best or guestimate of your current performance in the case of first competitions for the season. This will enable us to place athletes in the correct race/event for the competition • As always, competitors must be members of Athletics WA in order to compete • Please be specific and follow the format for entering the seeded times/ distances. For example-

100m time - 12.30 400m time - 65.00 1500m time- 4:32.50 3000m - 13:44.59 - 1.60 Long Jump- 5.35 Discus- 27.33

As always, competitors must be members of Athletics WA in order to compete.

Friends of UWAAC – Life Membership Honour

Congratulations on being awarded Life Membership to the UWA Athletics Club: Don Young

Don's first involvement with the Club came in 1952 when as an engineering student at UWA, he first competed. Don was a sprinter with particular prowess over the 440yds. Not satisfied with being merely a competitor, Don was elected Club secretary in 1953 and President in 1954, the same year he was awarded a Half Blue.

In 1955 Don inconveniently graduated but not wishing to curtail his athletics career at UWA he enrolled as a part-time arts student. This enabled him to continue his contributions to club life including intervarsity trips. Hhe acquired a Full Blue in 1956, a year in which there were some very handy athletes going around the country.

Professional commitments and a move to London meant that his illustrious career as an administrator and competitor at UWA came to an end in 1957.

He always retained an interest in the sport and the Club, and in 1997 he and Colin O'Sullivan collected together a large group of former members of the club to form what has become the Friends of UWA Athletics. The activities of this group have maintained relationships and support of the Club's current activities.
