A number of changes took place in January 2012 to the way age groups were designated. The first step to aligning the age groups in New Zealand to the IAAF (and indeed the rest of the world) took place when the age as at 31st December in the year of competition was implemented. There were three age groups in 2012, but because one of them did not align with the international standard we produced ranking lists for four age groups as a compromise. What was achieved was that we only had to produce ranking lists for a calendar year rather than having to present lists for both the calendar year and the domestic season (which encompassed parts of two calendar years). Further changes took place in January 2013 and these will be reflected in next year’s Almanac. Again for this edition we have collected most of the data ourselves over the past few months – so we take responsibility for any errors. Once again, before gettingw immersed in the content, we would advise you to spend a few minutes reading the Notes section which details some of the intricacies of the data. Stephen Hollings Simon Holroyd February 2013 Acknowledgements We are grateful to the following colleagues and associates who provided content and their expertise to sections of this almanac: Gavin Lovegrove of Lovegrove Design, designed the cover, undertook the typesetting and layout and coordinated and supervised the printing of the Almanac. Murray McKinnon collated the list of National Records and compiled the list of Records that were set during the year. Carl Jackson supplemented some of the All-time lists with his own data. 2 Athletics New Zealand Almanac 2012 Notes 2012 Calendar Year – The material in this Almanac covers the 2012 Calendar year which is from 1st January 2012 until 31st December 2012. Age Groups – New Zealand had three age groups in 2012. They were three age groups: Men/Women17, Men/Women19, Senior Men/Women. However we decided that for 2012 we would additionally compile ranking lists for Men/Women 20. Names – We have used the convention that the athletes name as recorded on the Athletics New Zealand membership database is the name of the athlete that we record in our statistics. Names of athletes on the Athletics New Zealand membership database are sometimes at variance with the name used when entering a competition. Some athletes interchange abbreviated names and differently spelt first names across competitions. Further, many athletes names on registration become abbreviated or differently spelt when they enter a competition. We have endeavoured to be consistent but in many instances the athlete themselves prefer to be known by either name – depending on the circumstances (and their mood!). Name Change – Some athletes do change their family name due to specific circumstances e.g. marriage. Again we use the same convention as above – the family name they are using in the entry list or results of a competition. As far as we are aware the only athletes who have different family names in different parts of this Almanac are: Valerie Adams – Valerie Vili Tania Murray – Tania Murray-Dixon Demelza Murrihy – Demelza Murrihy-Topp Danielle Trevis – Danielle Ingram –Trevis Lesley Morton – Lesley Ryan Leonora Joy-Petrina – Leonora Petrina Bryn Jones – Bryn McLeod-Jones Affiliation -Again we have used the convention that the athlete’s affiliation is the one under which they are registered on the Athletics New Zealand membership database. We are reliant on athletes informing us of a change of affiliation (Centre/Club). For records, an athlete may be representing their club, their Centre, or has been selected to represent New Zealand. Whichever representation is officially recorded at the time of the competition where a record is set is the one that we use. Ranking Lists – Age group athletes’ performances (M/W17 and M/W19 and M/W20) will also appear in the Open Men/Women lists if the event specification (implement weight/ hurdle height) of the age group is the same as that of the specification for Senior Men/Women. M/W17 athletes will not appear additionally in the M/W19 lists unless they compete with M/W19 implements/hurdle heights. Athletics New Zealand Almanac 2012 3 All-Time Lists – The All-time lists were first compiled in early 2010 and listed the top 20 All-time performances. Since that time, there have been performances that would fit into the top 20 All-time. Hence some of the lists are longer than 20 athlete’s performances. Only athletes who were eligible to represent New Zealand internationally at the time of the performance are included in the All-time lists. Age Records – Eligibility for a New Zealand Age Record is different from eligibility for competing in an Age Group. Age Records are adjudged on the age of the athlete on the day of the performance. Registered Athletes – Only performances achieved by athletes who are registered with Athletics New Zealand appear on Ranking Lists. Many school athletes, Children’s Association athletes, Masters/ Veteran athletes are not registered with Athletics New Zealand. Errors/Omissions – If you do find any errors or notice any omissions in this Almanac please let us know on [email protected] so that they can be addressed.
