The Sydney Pacific Athletic Club President has recently met with key stakeholders including the CEO of Athletics NSW, Duncan Tweed and a member of the NSW Office of Sport Executive. The Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation Narrabeen is one of 11 Sport and Recreation Centres in NSW that are part of the NSW Office of Sport. The submission states that ‘in the very short term a full upgrade of the Tartan Track to IAAF standard1 at the Track & Field Centre is required at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation, Narrabeen, NSW’. As the cost for such work will be in excess of $500,000, this classifies as a Major Capital Work and is subject to budget administrative processes between the NSW Office of Sport and the NSW Treasury. In developing its strategic direction for 2015-19, the NSW Office of Sport has identified strategic priorities2 that include: . Provision of high quality venues and facilities . Increased participation in sport and active recreation activities . High performance sporting success and well developed pathways. The CEOs of both Athletics NSW and Little Athletics NSW have provided to the Sydney Pacific Club President, in writing, very strong support for the Narrabeen Track upgrade. The Narrabeen Track & Field facility is well used by the Sydney Pacific Athletic Club, the Manly Warringah Little Athletics Centre, local primary and secondary schools, the Warringah Triathlon Club and independent coaches and their squads. The last major track refurbishment at Narrabeen was in 2008. It has been estimated that the Narrabeen based Sydney Pacific Athletic Club Coaches and their Athletes spend at least $56,000 per year on entry fees to the Narrabeen T&F Centre. 1 IAAF: International Association of Athletics Federations www.iaaf.org 2 Source: http://www.sport.nsw.gov.au/assets/pubs/annualreports/Office_of_Sport_Annual_report_2015.pdf Robert McEntyre, President Bill Nappin, Vice President Email: [email protected] Mobile: 0407 208 364 Email: [email protected] Mobile: 0404 008 744 There are nine locations in Sydney that have Track & Field Centres with Tartan tracks. We were lucky enough to only have to cancel two competition nights with one due to excessive heat and the other with heavy rain and thunderstorms. Our athlete numbers were slightly down for the season 2014-2015 however our committee will try and market the local public schools to increase our sign on registrations for the following season. The representative season started with the Zone Championships at Glenbrook and with a week of torrential rain leading up to the carnival it looked like it was going to be delayed at the final hurdle, however it went ahead and was a great weekend where all our athletes performed outstandingly and the Glenbrook Little Athletics club should be commended for hosting a great carnival.
