Almanac 2014 2 Introduction We are pleased to be able to offer you this fifth annual edition of the Almanac. Having made major changes to the age groups and listings in 2013, there have been few if any changes to the age groups and the listing of performances in this edition. The database continues to grow and now contains over 54,600 performances by 3040 athletes. Major work in the 2014 year focussed on consolidating the lists of Records. Bylaw changes that reflect this consolidation are expected in the early part of 2015 and we should then be able to fill in some of the “gaps” in the data. We have added a couple of new sections and have extended the lists to include the names of all athletes who achieved a ranking qualifying performance – rather than as in the past restricting the lists to the top 50 ranked athletes in each event. Again for this edition we have collected most of the data ourselves over the past few months – so we take responsibility for any errors. Once again, before getting immersed in the content, we would advise you to spend a few minutes reading the Notes section which details some of the intricacies of the data. Stephen Hollings Simon Holroyd January 2015 Acknowledgements We are grateful to the following colleagues and associates who provided content and their expertise to sections of this almanac: Gavin Lovegrove of Lovegrove Design, designed the cover, undertook the typesetting and layout and coordinated and supervised the printing of the Almanac. Terry Lomax supplied the data relating to the Athletics New Zealand Grand Prix Series and Murray McKinnon supplied some interesting facts on National Champions. NOTES 2014 Calendar Year – The material in this Almanac covers the 2014 Calendar year which is from 1st January 2014 until 31st December 2014. Age Groups – New Zealand had three age groups in 2014. They were: Youth Men/Women, Junior Men/Women, Senior Men/Women. These were the same as the IAAF definition. (see table below) Names – We have used the convention that the athletes name as recorded on the Athletics New Zealand membership database is the name of the athlete that we record in our statistics. Names of athletes on the Athletics New Zealand membership database are sometimes at variance with the name used when entering a competition. Some athletes interchange abbreviated names and differently spelt first names across competitions. Further, many athletes names on registration become abbreviated or differently spelt when they enter a competition. We have endeavoured to be consistent but in many instances the athlete themselves prefer to be known by either name – depending on the circumstances (and their mood!). Name Change – Some athletes do change their family name due to specific circumstances e.g. marriage. Again we use the same convention as above – the family name they are using in the entry list or results of a competition. As far as we are aware the only athletes who have different family names in different parts of this Almanac are: Valerie Adams – Valerie Vili Tania Murray – Tania Murray-Dixon Demelza Murrihy – Demelza Murrihy-Topp Danielle Trevis – Danielle Ingram –Trevis Lesley Morton – Lesley Ryan Leonora Joy-Petrina – Leonora Petrina Angela Petty – Angela Smit Fiona Centers – Fiona Hely Bryn Jones – Bryn McLeod-Jones Jordan de Spong – Jordan Rackham Athletics New Zealand - Almanac 2014 3 Affiliation - Again we have used the convention that the athlete’s affiliation is the one under which they are registered on the Athletics New Zealand membership database. We are reliant on athletes informing us of a change of affiliation (Centre/Club). For records, an athlete may be representing their club, their Centre, or has been selected to represent New Zealand. Whichever representation is officially recorded at the time of the competition where a record is set is the one that we use. Ranking Lists – Age group athletes’ performances (Junior Men/Women, Youth Men/Women) will also appear in the Open Men/Women lists if the event

CLUB KIWIFRUIT FUND RAISING PICK As reported in Ramblings newsletter, 6th June, 1992. The annual Shallcross kiwifruit pick was once again offered to Tauranga Ramblers to give our funds a much needed boost so that we can subsidise club days, Bar-B-Q’s, Pinto, buses, newsletters and travel to major events. All in all club members receive more than their subscriptions cover, therefore we need full support from all participants for our fund-raising efforts. The club is very appreciative of the chances to earn this money and a special thanks go to Bill and Marge Shallcross for this fruit picking opportunity. It certainly beats selling raffle tickets and gives us the chance to do something other than one’s usual job or studies. It is quite an education especially the way different people see the hairy berries – their shapes and sizes I’ll leave to your imagination. Colin Clifton commented that it was a change from working alone. Teresa Coston was certainly the noisiest and Kristin McLoughlin one of the quietest, but it was good to see everyone turn out. Some brought their spouses, or sons and daughters. Robyn Bint did a great job removing all the kiwifruit stalks. Marge did a great job of keeping the team fed, while Nigel Hines had done an absolutely fantastic job chasing along all members he could find. Over the two days we picked 162 bins compared to 166 last year. Unfortunately we couldn’t quite finish but Ramblers received $1400.00 for the two day’s work. Once again special thanks to Bill, Marge, Debbie, Russell, Rob Shallcross and his in-laws and to Nigel and Sheryl Hines for their organisation.
