MEMBERSHIP AND CLUBS

REGISTRATION The total registration number in the 2013-2014 season, which ends on 30 September, currently stands at 6,766. The breakdown is metropolitan club numbers 4,758 and country club numbers 2,008 both increasing from 3,893 and 1,669 respectively. The total number of officials has remained at 207. This includes an increase of Athletics Australia technical officials from 121 to 138 as well as 69 club officials. In addition, there are a number of technical officials who are registered as life members, athletes or coaches.

Athletics NSW also welcomed two new clubs from the Hunter/Newcastle region; Adamstown New Lambton and Newcastle Runners Inc. Both clubs have a very strong initial membership base and look like they will thrive well into the future.

DUAL REGISTRATION The dual registration category remained strong with a total of 1,528 athletes. Joint programs between ANSW and Little Athletics NSW such as the JETS (Junior Encouragement and Talent Squad) continue to facilitate the transition from Little Athletics competition to senior athletics. This is evident when we look at the growth of under 18 athletes from 619 to 685 and under 20 athletes from 311 to 356. This is proving that the dual athlete registration is continuing to provide a seamless pathway from junior athletics to senior ranks.

COMMUNITY ATHLETE The community athlete category continues to go from strength to strength, this year reaching 2,417 members compared to last year, which was 1,188. The community athlete is a way in which ANSW can break into the ever increasing and lucrative recreational running market. By capturing these athletes, ANSW has been able to promote its events directly and has had over 150 of these athletes progress to full membership categories. It has also enabled ANSW to promote and encourage these members to compete in the Sydney:10, the Fernleigh15, Goulburn and Parkes fun runs and other ANSW events. December 2013, summarised the information gathered from clubs, highlighting significant areas in which ANSW can provide both UPDATE IN IMG SYSTEM monetary and administrational support, such as sponsorship and IMG Sports Technology Group (IMGSTG) and Athletics Australia (AA) marketing, administration support, coaching, tools for recruitment, have signed a new multi-year technology partnership deal that will see and event management. OFFICIALS

At least 100 of ANSW’s registered officials regularly attend Athletics NSW competitions. The dedication and expertise of these officials is highly regarded and valued. The team is comprised of a diverse group of people, including highly qualified officials, brand new officials and those who still compete. Every official is vital in the delivery of competitions in the summer and winter seasons.

The Officials Advisory Panel (OAP), as listed on page 2, represents the officials. The aim of the panel is to facilitate the recruitment and retention of officials, adoption of new technology and the quality of meet presentation.

To focus on the continuing development of officials in NSW, the OAP formed an Education Sub-Committee to develop a regular schedule of exams and seminars for new and existing officials. A survey was sent out to all members so that the committee could identify the biggest needs of clubs and officials. With a low response rate, this survey will be revised and sent out again. The sub-committee has been committed to organising regular seminars on the various specialties of officiating at different venues in NSW. This is all done with a vision to increase the number of officials and to improve the quality of officiating.

Over the course of the 2013-2014 season, 60 officials attempted C Level exams, 16 sat B Level exams and two officials attempted A Level Accreditation. Congratulations to those who received their accreditation, and a special welcome to those who have achieved this for the first time.

The OAP also appointed a new appointments sub-committee who oversee the appointment of all officials to NSW summer and winter competitions, in addition to school carnivals. The committee helps to ensure the quality of officiating at all meets as well as giving new and upcoming officials opportunities to gain more experience at higher levels.

In recognition of the effort and dedication of NSW officials, Athletics NSW has a reward scheme based on the number of competitions an official has attended. The scheme involves three levels, of which the pinnacle level is awarded to those who have officiated at over 25 competitions. Congratulations to the following officials who have reached that level: Don Allen, Richard Batterley, Paul Buckley, Ivan Delaney, Julie Dredge, Murray Gaudin, Ann Grimm, Dave Higgins, Peter Higgins, Rob Jones, Allan Kay, Graham Kearns, Terry Manns, Betty Moore, Janet Munro, John Munro, Susan Newton, Liz Radley, Jeanette Richter, Ron Richter, John Smith, Lynette Smith, Tony Smyth, Stan Stark, Sue Stephens, Del Warrick, Bronwyn Webb.

On behalf of the athletes, coaches, spectators, ANSW Board of Directors and staff, all officials are thanked for the ongoing contribution to the sport of athletics. We hope to see you all again next season.
