Looking ahead to the 2012 A.M.A. Champion- ships, I have set up a V.M.A. facebook page so that our Committee and Members can share information more quickly and express We are very sad to learn of the passing of opinions. As you may have heard we are giving all volunteers at the A.M.A. Championships a free polo shirt and with that in mind we need to know as early as possi- ble what size shirts to order. Club Captain Barry Murley advises that in regard to the query by Stacey Van Dueren ( mentioned in Decem- ber Footprints ) and a subsequent enquiry by Greg Moore of the same nature, there were 16 V.M.A. athletes who didn’t register at the V.M.A. table at the half and were not included in the results. At events such as these where you may be competing for your A.V. club, you must also register with V.M.A. if you want to be included in our results.

Good news from Lavinia Petrie that the Knox track will have been fully operational for Knox’s Wednesday night meetings from 25th. January. The work being done there has prevented the Venue from having regular meetings since April 2011. Meanwhile, East Burwood is still conducting their Thursday night meetings at Doncaster and needless to say, members from other Venues are very welcome. The track at East Burwood is needing some pretty extensive foundation work on the back straight to prevent further subsidence and is unlikely to be ready before April.

Our Club Secretary, Phil Urquhart had a fall whilst running recently breaking 3 ribs and puncturing his lung. He was rushed to Hospital and is recovering well. He told me, however, that he averages 2 falls a year while running. Training wheels I think, Phil.

In the Australia Day Honours -

Thomas Victor ROBERTS O.A.M., Ballarat, Victoria. For service to the community of Ballarat, particularly through the Royal Australian Air Force Association, and to medicine.

Tom was a terrific open-age and Masters athlete and still holds one of the longest standing World Masters Records, the M50 1500m at 4:05.02. That record was set in 1984 ! I had a chat to Tom, who practised as an obstetrician and gynaecologist in Ballarat from 1966 until 1997, and has a wonderful list of achievements and service given to his community. Tom told me he was in the race at Olympic Park in 1954 when became the first man to break the 4 minute mile on Aus- tralian soil and competed at the first World Veterans Championships in Toronto in 1975 finishing second to 1956 Olympian in the 1500m. He missed Gothenburg in 1977, but went to Hanover in 1979 where he lost the 800m by 2/100 of a second and was pipped by the legendary Ed Whitlock in the 1500m. Tom mentioned it was at Hanover that the Australian team presented the main driving force behind the formation of Vets in Australia, Wal Sheppard, with a “willie warmer”.Tom continued to attend World Vet- erans Championships and it was in Rome in 1985 that he finally won Gold in the 800m - 1500m double. In Melbourne 1987 he got a second and a third and in Eugene again got the double gold. Tom continued to compete, his last World’s being Gateshead in 1999. Then arthritis and atrial fibrillation saw him finish running.

Here is Tom winning the M55 1500m by “a street” at the Eugene, Oregon World Veterans Championships in 1989 where he also set a World Record in the 800m, and at right, chasing down the Kiwi legend 5

RESULTS - ANDY SALTER RELAY – 2012

Wednesday 1st February 2012 saw the 29th running of the Andy Salter relay at the Springvale/Noble Park venue. As the longest running inter venue event, it continues to be popular and this year saw 94 runners and walkers take part, with representatives from 7 venues attending. The weather gods were kind to us and provided a most pleasant evening for the event.

The Challenge division was contested by 8 teams and for the 6th year in a row Knox was far too good winning by just over 3 minutes from their No. 2 side. Results were:

1st – Knox No 1 – 43.22 – Paul Wilson, Noel Eastwood, Paul Connor, Susi Wilson 2nd – Knox No 2 - 46.33 – Graeme Leticq, Julie Norney, John Graham, Russell Speight 3rd – Croydon – 48.21 – Andrew Egginton, Pam Tindal, Ray Merida, Colin Page

Fastest times were: Female – Julie Norney (Knox) – 11.25 Male – Paul Wilson (Knox) – 9.53

In the Fun Run division 11 teams (plus unplaced Challenge teams) competed for the nearest estimated time trophy. The winners, spot on their nominated time, was a team from Springvale comprising Allison Devine, Marc Vellin, Steven Barker and Dean Copland. It was a close battle in this event as there were 7 teams that were less than 10 seconds out.

The estimated time team walk attracted 6 and for the third year in a row the winners were the East Bur- wood team of Alan Lucas, Liz Feldman and Llew Jenkins a mere 10 seconds out.

A lovely supper was enjoyed after the serious business of competing and, as is usual at Masters events, there was lots of conversation with people from different venues catching up with each other. Clearly everyone enjoyed the evening and we hope this event continues for many years. A big thank you to all who helped make the night a success, particularly all those who helped provide the supper and those who acted as of- ficials. Full results will be in the February edition of Around the Grounds.

Springvale/Noble Park snippets

There have been a few things happening at the venue over the last few months. Eric Greaves 5km handicap – this annual handicap series is the feature event on our venue program and is raced over 3 heats and a final. 2011 saw its 13th running, and as always it was a hard fought contest. There were many chances in the run with Bill Irvine and Lou Buccieri looking big chances. But as he did a few years ago, Peter Carmody put in a great burst in the last lap to claim his second victory in the event with Bill and Lou filling the minor placings. Bert Warburton 3km walk handicap – run in conjunction with the Eric Greaves a large field assembled for the final. In the end it turned into a “field” event with Peter Field overtaking wife Jenny in the last lap for a narrow win. Not a very chivalrous thing to do one could say. Peter won the Eric Greaves in 2010 so to prove his versatility he turned to walking in 2011. He becomes the second person to win both events, the other being Tony Johnson. Ross Martin 3km handicap –2011 was the second running of this event this year in honour of Ross who passed away three years ago in his early fifties. He had finished all Melbourne until his untimely passing. Front marker Peter Battrick looked a big chance for a long way but he faded badly in the last lap with several runners passing him. The winner was Will Selleck who put in a very strong performance (I think he had been hiding his form from the handicapper) to win comfortably from fellow backmarker Chris Murphy with Lou Buccieri an honest third. The Doran medal – this is an annual award presented at our Christmas break up and 2011 was the 20th presentation. It is a highlight of the evening and creates great frivolity starting with the grand entrance of the Great Doran (otherwise known as Tony Doran) resplendent in his robes (rags fit for the rubbish bin) car- ried in on his throne (chair) by his courtiers. The origin of the medal can be traced back to Mick Davin and the articles he used to write for the local press. Mick had a very vivid imagination and he would concoct all sorts of stories very loosely based on the happenings at the venue. Being long term mates with Tony from their time at Glenhuntly, and no doubt egged on by the late Eric Greaves, things like the Great Doran stand (read the seats in front of the clubrooms) began to appear in the press until eventually the Doran medal got a run. It was decided to go one step further and make it real and a perpetual trophy was struck. The award is for outstanding performance throughout the year and what that constitutes is open to the interpretation the judges who are the previous winners who vote on a 3,2,1 basis. The counting of votes (definitely done with more drama than the Brownlow) is eagerly awaited each year and starts off a great evening of fun and festivity. A most popular winner in 2011 was Jim Sinclair. How appropriate is the caption above his head in the photo of him holding the trophy.

Greg is the most versatile of performers being a re- nowned star of Rock music, Country music and his own unique brand of sports music parody as evidenced by his work with The Coodabeen Champions over 30 years. His two most loved sporting hit songs – “I Made a 100 in the Backyard at Mum’s” and “That’s the Thing About Football” have become anthems for cricket and A.F.L. football fans. As a V.M.A. and Diamond Valley A.C. member, Greg is a regular and enthusiastic competitor in Masters and Ath- letics Victoria competition. The Awards Dinner will be held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) which is adjacent to Lake- side Stadium and at only $55.00 per head it will be a great night. You can book for this evening when you enter for the Championships, either online on the A.M.A. website www.australianmastersathletics.org.au/ or on the entry form in this newsletter. You are welcome to attend this night even if you are not competing. 8 PETER COLTHUP - THE PASSING OF A LEGEND

A huge congregation of friends and relatives of Peter Colthup attended his funeral at LePine Dandenong on January 3rd. Peter had passed away at the age of 90 after a period of time in a nursing home. His coffin was draped with an Australian flag, a Richmond footy scarf , a golf club, his running shoes, his Vets club singlet and various other significant items placed there by members of his family. Peter Colthup had had a remarkable life and the various speakers described different facets of this legend’s career. From his son Peter, through the generations to his grandchildren, the speakers emphasised the feature which was primary in his life, he was a fantastic fam- ily man. His love of family rang out loud and clear in the stories of the way he gave time and energy to them in all sorts of activities such as golf games, run- ning around the block, competitive table-tennis games and bowls competitions. A master of all sports, he encouraged them and played with them, it seems, endlessly. Remarkable how he always found time and great good humour to give them his full attention. The smile never left his face. As a result he won the love and open affection of every one of his quite large family. That was the obvious lesson coming from the first half dozen speakers. Having lived so long, it was not surprising that his life included many things beyond the experience of most of us. As a working class young man, he worked as a grocery boy, then a fencer, then went into the army in 1942. He became a sergeant by the end of the war. During the war he met the love and support of his life, Marge. It was the start of a partnership well known to all who met them in their various interests. Team Colthup were a formidable pair, pro- ducing an unbelievable output of work over such a long period of time. “Behind every successful man there is a good woman.” But Marge has her own claims to fame as a world champion race walker and the matriarch of a remarkable family. After the war, Peter played most sports but became really hooked on running. It was a time when Melbourne was in the midst of a distance running boom with our stars hitting the world news. John Landy was training at Central Park and a stable of his close rivals were using Caulfield Racecourse to train. eterP was right up with them. It was the gen- esis of Glenhuntly Athletic Club, which also turned 90 last year. was the next speaker and he told us of the great work Peter did for Glenhuntly as secretary and president over nearly 20 years. Then Ron Young took us into the next phase of Peter’s life, veteran athletics, which became his passion. Ron told us how Peter designed Vets athletic gear and flogged navy windcheaters, tee shirts and introduced an official blue club singlet featuring the red heart which became the compulsory uniform for Vic Vets competition. Eric Greaves nick- named Peter “Arthur Daly” for his merchandising enthusiasm. Peter’s grandson had recounted how the kids often got roped in to helping him collate the monthly Around the Grounds, which became a mammoth job as the club member- ship grew to over 1000. Peter would crank up his temperamental Gestetner machine and run off hundreds of copies of venue results each month. Ron Young, with his printing job, was the source of supplying Peter with cheap paper offcuts and Peter went through it by the ton. After the tributes from family and friends, we were treated to a wonderful slide presentation spanning Peter’s life. We saw Peter as a young man in army uniform and early shots of the beautiful young Marge with whom he fell in love. Later slides showed Peter in many family situations over the years and then in running mode. The final tribute came from a member of the local RSL who gave a brief resume of Peter’s army career, during which he was very highly regarded. Members of the congregation were invited to place red poppies in a basket on the coffin to remember Peter’s war-time contribution to his country. Marge was presented with a folded Australian flag at the conclusion of the RSL speech. We filed out to the music of Slim Dusty’s “Looking Forward, Looking Back” after an extremely uplifting farewell to a great friend and colleague. Those present at the funeral numbered many long-term members of Glenhuntly and Vic Vets. To name a few, with apologies to those we miss, there were Ted McDonald, 93, ex-president of the vets, Les Clark, Chas McCrae, Eddie Stack (whose jokes had not improved!), Lavinia Petrie, John Kneen, Kevin Brown, Jim Davy, Tom and Judy Davison, Jan Morrey, Judy Wines, Marlene and Roy Stanway, Iris and Tony Cook, Jim Crawford, Tony Bradford, Des Middleton, Peter Bruce, Trevor and Lyn Jupp, Tony Doran, Mick Davin, Russell Oakley, Jim Sinclair, Peter Battrick, Alan Irwin, Joy Her- bert, Jim McLure, Bob Power and ourselves, Dot and Colin Browne.

PS. As a remarkable coincidence, the Vic Vets secretary whom Peter replaced so long ago, Keith Routley, passed away at the age of 88 on the day of Peter’s funeral. He too had given the Vets incredible service. He was treasurer in Peter’s time and stayed on committee for several more years giving advice on legal matters. Eric Greaves had a nick- name for him too, “The Dormouse” as he often dozed off in committee meetings. 9

KEITH TASMAN MONDS ROUTLEY 1924 - 2012 Foundation Member of VicVets/V.M.A.

Keith was one of the founders of Victorian Veterans Athletics, now Victorian Masters, and later wrote some interesting notes about how it all happened. He died recently aged 87 and at his well-attended funeral many Masters runners were present to pay tribute. Keith was born in Devonport, Tasmania , the son of Tasman Rout- ley and Florence Monds, hence his unusual combination of middle names, but grew up in Ivanhoe and attended Ivanhoe Grammar School. The time that he left school was during World War II and, after beginning an accounting career, he joined the RAAF and served for four years from 1942 in New Guinea & Borneo. He then resumed in accounting, later becoming qualified and worked in this profession all his business life. Keith married and had three daughters. In sport his first love was tennis but along the way he discovered running, inspired by the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Keith joined Box Hill Athletic Club, not far from his home in Ringwood and was a stalwart of this club as a distance runner, completing something like 36 marathons with a personal best of 2.47, as well as countless other events and championships. In the early 1970’s the Veterans move- ment came into being and Keith was one of the original members of the Collingwood venue. Much later, due to his accounting background, Keith was appointed auditor of Victorian Veterans Athletics and when the then treasurer died suddenly Keith stepped in and handled the accounts. He con- tinued for some years in an accounting/auditing capacity which was typical of his attitude of putting something back into the community. Over a period he was busy with many community activities, includ- ing with the Anglican church. Keith was always good for a discussion and argument on many topics and was a much-loved family man. His health had deteriorated recently but he still took an interest in family & community activities to the end. In 2000, Keith attended the Sydney Olympics with his youngest daughter, Mary-Anne. and was said to be in tears as Cathy Freeman won the 400m. This was to be special time together as Mary-Anne was to die two years later. Tribute by Peter LeGet

LINDSAY THOMAS MEMORIAL - Springvale Venue.

Wednesday 18th January 2012 saw the 20th running of the Lindsay Thom- as Memorial event at Braeside Park. This event has maintained its popularity over the years with many familiar faces among the very good attendance of competi- tors, officials and supporters. After a couple of hot days the weather man was kind to us and he provided much better conditions for running and socialising. Some people took advantage of the pleasant surrounds to enjoy a picnic before heading home. As mentioned in previous reports, the event is somewhat unique in that it is not an exact distance. It is either 1 or 2 laps, with each lap approximately 5.2 km. There were 35 entries in the 2 lap run, 39 entries in the 1 lap run and 35 entries in the 1 lap walk – a total of 109 entries. There were representatives from 7 different venues plus quite a few non masters who come as friends of the Thomas family. As was the case last year, there was a lack of female runners. Come on ladies, it is a great venue for a run so we hope to see you next year. Anyone who has competed in the event knows how good an evening it is - plenty of parking and a scenic course among the trees. As well the trophies for placegetters there are numerous spot prizes on offer as an extra incentive for those who are not so fast. So if you didn’t compete this year put it on your calen- dar for next year and encourage others to come, be they masters or not. With an entry fee of $5 it is prob- ably the best value run/walk in Melbourne. In the main event (2 laps) Noel Eastwood repeated his effort from last year for a comfortable victory with Heather Gaunt winning the women’s event. As was the case last year there was a good battle in the men’s one lap with Andrew Edwards managing to hold off his Glen Eira teammate Chris Grafen. Heather Carr blitzed the walkers with a most impressive time, as always, with the editor of Footprints, Russ Dickenson leading the men home. The first non master in the 2 lap event was Hugh Thomas a nephew of Lindsay. Obvi- ously there are running genes in the Thomas family. Lindsay’s sons Andrew and Michael were victors in the 1 and 2 lap non masters events last year.

Results on the night are as follows;

Male Female 10+km run (2 laps) 1. Noel Eastwood 38.51 1. Heather Gaunt 47.43 2. John Graham 41.03 2. Liz Eastwood 57.08 3. Marc Vellin 41.33

5+km run (1 lap) 1. Andrew Edwards 19.09 1. Elaine Morrison 31.17 2. Chris Grafen 19.37 2. Celia Johnson 32.11 3. Dean Copland 20.34

5+km walk (1 lap) 1. Russ Dickenson 30.21 1. Heather Carr 29.05 2. Des Middleton 31.46 2. Sandra Middleton 34.50 3. Claudio Riga 31.48 3. Margaret Beaumont 43.43

10+km run (1st 50+ male) 1. Colin Page 42.38 10+km run (1st 60+ male) 1. Gary Stewart 43.14

10+km run (non master) 1. Hugh Thomas 47.06 1. Bronwen Loizou 46.39 5+km run (non master) 1. Luke Goodman 20.49 1. Jessie Eastwood 24.00

As always the event ran smoothly and this is mainly due to Ken Hough who has organised all 20 events and has every detail planned. He was well supported by quite a large numbers of helpers and we thank them as well those who brought supper and donated spot prizes. Without these people the event couldn’t happen. We also thank the Parks Victoria rangers at Braeside Park for their assistance. 17

AMA NATIONAL POSTAL RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012 The AMA Board has determined that this competition will continue to be run in the same format as for 2011. Due to the Oceania Championships in Turanga, NZ the period for doing the relays has been extended. Relays may be conducted between the 15th Jan and 29th Feb 2012. Results need to be sent to the Director of Competition to arrive by no later than the 9th March 2012. The winners will be announced at the AMA National T & Field Titles in Melbourne, Vic, from April 6 – 9 in 2012. Results will be published on the AMA web-site where the best performances so far in the different age categories can be found. Challenge your relay teams to beat the best. The National Relay Championships shall involve only the following relays in 2012 for both Men and Women. 4 x 100 M; 4 x 400 M; 4 x 800 M; 4 x 800 M walk Long Jump; Shot Put; Hammer; Discus (Note: In future years some of the relays may change to cater for athletes’ different event interests but for now while getting the Relays firmly established on the calendar constancy of events and format is important) The Board is looking forward to more entries than the highest of 187 in 2010. Please use the Summary sheet provided to list all Relay teams entered and to determine the fee payable at $5 per team. Cheques and Money orders to be made payable to AMA Inc. Results should be transcribed from the Time sheets and Field sheets onto the Relay Results sheets provided. These show the Age Category, Names of competitors, their age on the day, and the time for track relays or individual and total distance for the field relays and are to be signed by the ChiefTimekeeper, Competition Director, Field Referee or Chief Field Judge as appropriate. Member clubs will need to make several copies of the sample Results sheets to cater for all the different Men’s and Women’s Age categories. Relay Result Sheets plus relay team summary sheet and money must be sent to AMA Competition Director. (It is not necessary to send in original time sheets or field sheets that may show other competitors) For 2012 I have again included two spreadsheets, one for entering the names and results for the track and the other for field events. The field spreadsheet asks for individual distances and then sums the values. These sheets have a standard layout that will allow me to copy the data directly into another spreadsheet for all results that I can easily sort for order of performance. Both spreadsheets are protected but not with a password so extra lines can be added. NOTE however that you will still need to supply the results sheets etc as well as the completed spreadsheet that can be sent electronically. Address for sending results: Graeme Rose AMA Competition Director P.O. Box 277 Surrey Hills Victoria 3127 Email: [email protected] 26

Emails

Russ,

Some of my friends have urged me to send this. I was most disappointed by your comments regarding Sacramento in a previous edition of Footprints. I loved the place. There were visiting athletes staying in hotels etc all over the place, it would be a logistical nightmare to provide shut- tle buses to cover them all, especially when there was a local bus network that covered the whole area. Any shuttle bus system would just be duplicating this. An added benefit was that by travelling on the local buses, I got to meet the locals, who were a very open and friendly lot, quite willing to talk to me. I didn’t have any trouble getting around because I can read a bus timetable. Regarding the heat - there were marquees along the main straight at Sac State, though I found it quite pleasant to sit in the sun on occasion. But the organisers knew it was likely to be hot, that`s why they scheduled competition during the morning and even- ing, and left the afternoons free. What I really cannot understand though is why anyone would go halfway round the world, then complain because they did things a bit differently.

Neil Gray

Thanks for your email, Neil. I had a very good time in Sacramento and liked the place and the people. I loved the trip overall. It was my first taste of overseas competition. I have been to all but one A.M.A. Championship since 2005 and found them all to be better organised than was Sacramento. Most people I spoke to, Australian and other Nationalities, told me that they were the worst organised “Games” they had been to. Lynne Schickert, immediate Past President of A.M.A., who has been to many international meets, saw fit to publish an exerpt of the article that you disliked in theA.M.A. Handbook. Admitedly, Lynne edited my article. My only track event was at “Sac City” or Hughes Stadium, not the main stadium - “Sac State” - where you competed. At this venue, I can assure you there was no shade, other than for Officials and athletes who had been called. My was scheduled for 11.33 a.m., but we didn’t get on the track until 1.45 p.m. as the Officials saw fit to insert some unscheduled Decathlon events into a schedule that was already over an hour late. The temperature was over 40 degrees by the time we raced. Just prior to our race there were 70 and 80 y.o.’s racing in that heat. My wife and two friends, who had to compete that evening, had to sit in the blazing sun for four hours. The food they sold was what I would call “American Carnival Cuisine”, their feature item being “Corn Dogs”, no cof- fee and only diet soft drink. I see you did only one event, the 800 metres. I did three, including a 10k and a 20k. Thankfully the weather was a little milder for the two longer events and we did start early. I will admit that the two road walks were at an excel- lent venue and were well run. But then we had to go back to the main stadium for the presentations which were just chaotic. I’m sure the medal winners would have preferred a presentation at the walk venue in front of their peers. Neil, the conditions may have been favorable for sprinters and not too bad for the 800 metres, but they were appall- ing for distance athletes. Maybe the place we stayed was badly located but we were warned by the other Aussies that the buses passing our hotel were unreliable and I certainly didn’t travel halfway around the world to be late for my events. Neil, if you would like to send me your Sacramento Story, I would be delighted to publish it as a contrast “The Furnace” that was Hughes Stadium. to mine. I am more than happy to use articles by our Not a bit of shade members. And if people disagree with my point of view, I don’t mind. But I would like to make one final point, I didn’t complain because they did things differently. I com- plained because I in my opinion they did some things very badly. Different is fine with me.
