A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Friends in Christ, Let me begin this week by reminding you that this Thursday is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a holy day of obligation to attend Mass. Our Masses are at 7 pm on Wednesday, the vigil of the feast day, and at 6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., and 12 noon. For now, we are keeping four Masses for the holy day. We will probably need to reduce that number in the future. Holy Days of obligation differ from country to country. For instance, in Ireland St. Patrick’s Day is a holy day of obligation. There is very little partying and drinking over there on March 17th. It is treated as a spiritual day – a holiday but also a holy day. In our country, we observe six holy days: in chronological order they are: January 1st, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God; Ascension Thursday, 40 Days after Easter; The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15th; All Saints’ Day, November 1st; December 8th, The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary; lastly, Christmas Day. Confusion comes in when some of them fall on a Saturday or a Monday. When New Year’s Day, the Assumption BVM, or All Saints’ Day fall on a Saturday or Monday, the feast day is still observed, but the obligation to attend Mass is suspended. The other three days are always fully observed. Ascension Thursday never falls on a Saturday or Monday for obvious reasons. December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, is our national feast day. The USA is consecrated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Finally, Christmas, the Birth of the Lord, is always a holy day, once again for obvious reasons. In past times when Europe was a Catholic continent, people worked a six day week. They looked forward to Holy Days because they not only went to Church, but they also received a day off from work. It’s up to us to make these days holy by remembering to get to Mass. Next, I want to thank all of you who have contributed to our emergency roof repairs. If you have not seen it yet, go to our website www.stchrisparish.org and watch the roof being blown off of our school. We have surveillance cameras everywhere on the property, and one of them caught the roof being blown off. While insurance will cover a large part of the new roof, we have a high deductible and we need your help. So far, we have received over $11,000 in contributions. If you are looking to make a contribution with a purpose, this is it. After the deductible is paid, any additional contribution will be placed in our needy student fund. As always, I am grateful for your support of our parish here and in so many other ways. I have some good news to share before signing off. Father Sean English has been assigned as administrator of St. Stanislaus Parish in Lansdale. In all probability, Father Sean will be officially appointed as pastor there next June. We all know that Father Sean is a very good priest with exceptional ability. His new assignment begins on August 26th. The pastor of Visitation BVM in Trooper had been told that Father Sean would not be with him long. That pastor figured he would have him a year or two – not a month or two! We all congratulate Father Sean and we know he will be a good pastor. Hoping that you are finding some time for summer relaxation and peace, I am Sincerely in Christ,
