Christopher Cross Biography Christopher Cross is a music icon. In 2011, the Oscar and five-time Grammy winning artist is back with an amazingly crafted new album, Doctor Faith. It’s his first album of new and original material in over 12 years. Cross' 1980 self-titled debut album rocketed to the #2 spot. Breaking out as the biggest new star of that year, he virtually defined adult contemporary radio with a series of smoothly sophisticated ballads including the #1 hit, "Sailing." If the charts weren’t evidence enough, at the 1981 Grammy Awards Christopher walked off with an unprecedented and record-setting five Grammys, including Best New Artist and Song of the Year for "Sailing." The self-titled debut album, featuring lead single "Ride Like the Wind," and the massively successful second single "Sailing" made Cross a superstar. In the wake of two more Top 20 hits, "Never Be the Same" and "Say You'll Be Mine,” he soon scored a second #1, as well as an Academy Award, with "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)," which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, and Peter Allen for the smash Dudley Moore film Arthur. Christopher's much-anticipated second album Another Page was released in 1983 and produced the hits "All Right," "No Time for Talk," and a Top Ten entry for "Think of Laura. He charted 8 songs into the Billboard Top-40 charts between 1980 and 1983. Four years, two albums, eight hit singles, several world tours, five Grammy's, and one Oscar marked Christopher's meteoric rise to the top. -

Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history. -

B.A. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY DOMINGUEZ HILLS, 2000 "FUNK IS ITS OWN REWARD": AN ANALYSIS OF SELECTED LYRICS IN POPULAR FUNK MUSIC OF THE 1970s Advisor: Professor Daniel 0. Black Thesis dated July 2008 This research examined popular funk music as the social and political voice of African Americans during the era of the seventies. The objective of this research was to reveal the messages found in the lyrics as they commented on the climate of the times for African Americans of that era. A content analysis method was used to study the lyrics of popular funk music. This method allowed the researcher to scrutinize the lyrics in the context of their creation. When theories on the black vernacular and its historical roles found in African-American literature and music respectively were used in tandem with content analysis, it brought to light the voice of popular funk music of the seventies. This research will be useful in terms of using popular funk music as a tool to research the history of African Americans from the seventies to the present. The research herein concludes that popular funk music lyrics espoused the sentiments of the African-American community as it utilized a culturally familiar vernacular and prose to express the evolving sociopolitical themes amid the changing conditions of the seventies era. HOUSE RESOLUTION 7002 By Hardaway A RESOLUTION to honor and commend the legendary musical group, The Bar-Kays, of Memphis for entertaining American troops in Iraq and Kuwait. WHEREAS, this general assembly takes great pride in paying tribute to those Tennessee musical artists who have set aside their personal concerns and their careers to bring entertainment to American soldiers who are serving their country far from home; and WHEREAS, one such group of legendary musicians is The Bar-Kays, who have produced some of the funkiest soul music every played by a native Memphis band, an accolade that speaks volumes about both their creative talent and their musicianship; and WHEREAS, formed in Memphis in 1966, The Bar-Kays have blazed their trail in the musical genre of funk with syncopated beats and a dazzling array of costumes for four successful decades; and WHEREAS, a former house band for Memphis's Stax Records and the backing band for the legendary Otis Redding at the time of his death, The Bar-Kays have recorded twenty-nine albums and forty singles; their distinctive style and funky dance music have earned the group one platinum album, five gold albums and twenty Top 10 singles and albums; and WHEREAS, led by original member James Alexander and lead vocalist Larry Dodson, The Bar-Kays performed (from May 27 – June 1, 2008) for American troops serving in Iraq and Kuwait; and WHEREAS, sharing the stage with the Dazz Band and Con Funk Shun, The Bar-Kays were the third component of this super group, dubbed The Legends of Funk, which boosted -
