Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Traditional Funk: An Ethnographic, Historical, and Practical Study of Funk Music in Dayton, Ohio Honors Thesis Caleb G. Vanden Eynden Department: Music Advisor: Samuel N. Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history.

B.A. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY DOMINGUEZ HILLS, 2000 "FUNK IS ITS OWN REWARD": AN ANALYSIS OF SELECTED LYRICS IN POPULAR FUNK MUSIC OF THE 1970s Advisor: Professor Daniel 0. Black Thesis dated July 2008 This research examined popular funk music as the social and political voice of African Americans during the era of the seventies. The objective of this research was to reveal the messages found in the lyrics as they commented on the climate of the times for African Americans of that era. A content analysis method was used to study the lyrics of popular funk music. This method allowed the researcher to scrutinize the lyrics in the context of their creation. When theories on the black vernacular and its historical roles found in African-American literature and music respectively were used in tandem with content analysis, it brought to light the voice of popular funk music of the seventies. This research will be useful in terms of using popular funk music as a tool to research the history of African Americans from the seventies to the present. The research herein concludes that popular funk music lyrics espoused the sentiments of the African-American community as it utilized a culturally familiar vernacular and prose to express the evolving sociopolitical themes amid the changing conditions of the seventies era. HOUSE RESOLUTION 7002 By Hardaway A RESOLUTION to honor and commend the legendary musical group, The Bar-Kays, of Memphis for entertaining American troops in Iraq and Kuwait. WHEREAS, this general assembly takes great pride in paying tribute to those Tennessee musical artists who have set aside their personal concerns and their careers to bring entertainment to American soldiers who are serving their country far from home; and WHEREAS, one such group of legendary musicians is The Bar-Kays, who have produced some of the funkiest soul music every played by a native Memphis band, an accolade that speaks volumes about both their creative talent and their musicianship; and WHEREAS, formed in Memphis in 1966, The Bar-Kays have blazed their trail in the musical genre of funk with syncopated beats and a dazzling array of costumes for four successful decades; and WHEREAS, a former house band for Memphis's Stax Records and the backing band for the legendary Otis Redding at the time of his death, The Bar-Kays have recorded twenty-nine albums and forty singles; their distinctive style and funky dance music have earned the group one platinum album, five gold albums and twenty Top 10 singles and albums; and WHEREAS, led by original member James Alexander and lead vocalist Larry Dodson, The Bar-Kays performed (from May 27 – June 1, 2008) for American troops serving in Iraq and Kuwait; and WHEREAS, sharing the stage with the Dazz Band and Con Funk Shun, The Bar-Kays were the third component of this super group, dubbed The Legends of Funk, which boosted

Straight No Chaser has had an amazing decade. Ten years after turning a collegiate hobby into a recording career that has taken them around the world on tour, the a cappella group tells its story through music on ONE SHOT. Their seventh LP features 16 genre-spanning songs, and 10 entertaining conversational interludes, as the members of Straight No Chaser trace their unlikely rise from an undergraduate singing group at Indiana University to a beloved Atlantic Records act with a devoted international fanbase. Along the way, Straight No Chaser has sold more than 1.6 million albums in the U.S. and amassed more than 100 million YouTube views thanks to tightly arranged songs, impeccable vocal harmonies, and a healthy sense of humor. Yet Straight No Chaser’s success was never a given—these singers have worked hard to make the most of an unexpected opportunity when they signed with Atlantic and released their first album, HOLIDAY SPIRITS, in 2008. Recorded mostly in Bloomington, Indiana, with producer Steve Lunt, the track list for ONE SHOT reflects that sense of now or never, starting with opener and first single “Motownphilly/This Is How We Do It,” an energetic mash-up of Boyz II Men and Montell Jordan. Straight No Chaser made Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It” a staple of its repertoire in collage. Adding “Motownphilly,” with its lyrics about chasing improbable success, captured the way the singers felt as undergrads. “The lyrics from the Boyz II Men song fit our experience: We dreamed about this and now we are doing it, performing all over the world,” says Randy Stine, an original member.
