7RPH is a station that provides a reading and information service for those people who, for various reasons, cannot see, handle or understand material in print. was the first RPH station in Australia. They began in June 1982 and are now part of the Australia-wide RPH network. Jocks’ Journal editor Greg Newman dropped by and met up with Station Manager Vaughn Bennison at their studio in Davet St Hobart.

Jocks’ Journal: Where did life begin for you Vaughan? Vaughn: I was born in at Hawkes Bay which is bottom of the North Island in 1975. I moved to Australia .30 years ago this year

Have you always had a passion for radio since you were young? I also started doing some production work from home and I ran - My mother asked me when I was 5 what I wanted to be and I for some years a program for people who are blind and vision said a radio announcer - not a disc jockey. So I suppose it waned impaired in called ‘Look Around’ and I did that all a little bit in my teenage years and once I went to uni I got bit from home. Normally I would take it on a 5 inch reel or a mini disc disillusioned with radio, and then coming to Brisbane I suppose but on occasion I did actually email it through especially when it got even worse and I gave up on the idea of working in radio tight so that was sort of my first foray into getting into except at least being an announcer my preference was being in digital production and internet program . I did that off and the back room pushing buttons - production is probably my first on right up until 2012 and all the while I was doing announcing as love and building audio content. well. My favourite shift used to be the breakfast shift, I used to do the Thursday and Friday 6-8 shift and we would read the Courier Were people encouraging you to get into radio? Or did others Mail and then we would go on to read The Australian and I did think with your handicap - to avoid a career in radio? that shift for about 7 years. - A bit of both. I did some studies at uni and one was on the accessibility of radio playout software for people who are blind Then a move to , how did that come about? and the other one was on similar lines but what it enabled me I saw through my contacts that they were advertising a position to do was to go and have look at a few stations. People were not down here and I thought well I needed something to do and I so much saying don’t get into radio because you are blind, they threw my hat in the ring so to speak and got the job. We had a were saying don’t get into radio because it is hard work and you couple of interviews and I got called down to do an interview and really have to push. I frankly didn’t have the drive for it, not in really liked the place and ended up getting the job and moved that arena. I had done some work previously and continue to do down 3 months later and I have been down here with my wife and work with community radio such as 2NCR in Lismore in Northern two children nearly 5 years. NSW and I moved on to do production work and announcing with 4RPH in Brisbane. People were encouraging me to get behind the Dare I say your wife probably in the first winter said - ‘can we go microphone but that wasn’t particularly what I enjoyed doing. I back to Queensland?’ had to cultivate the ability to do that because so much of what - Ah yeah she doesn’t like the winter very much but has got used I was doing was predicated on my ability to deliver spoken word to it now. Interestingly enough my mother and her partner have content and I am a trained vocal performer. I did a lot of work on just come from NZ and they are complaining how cold it is. learning to speak coherently and deliver radio content. I happened to be at an RPH conference programs and local in Sydney and I met a couple of people who worked at 4RPH and content? they told me one of their producers was going on holiday and I - We deliver about 66 happened to be going to Brisbane at that time because my wife is hours a week of our from Brisbane and I said to them - “well hey I will be looking for own programming, something to do. It’s either that or hang with my in-laws and I and we consider our would love to help you with some production.” At that time they broadcast period were using all analogue gear which is what I grew up with. A man has shared a video of his grandparents’ a 58-year-old toaster that still functions in daily use. Michael Asher’s video, posted to YouTube shows Asher’s grandparents’ kitchen, where he and his grandmother are regarding her old toaster. Asher’s grandma says the toaster was a wedding gift 58 years ago and still sees daily use. Asher notes the cord is cut into sections that are cobbled together from other power cords due to the toll that time took on the kitchen appliance. Asher tests out the toaster by using it to perfectly toast a couple of slices of bread. (And let’s share a toast to Charles Strite! For he was the one who came up with first automatic pop-up toaster, which ejects the toast after toasting it. It was patented by Mr Strite in 1921.)

IKEA HAS CALLED ON TEENAGERS to stop hiding in its stores after closing time. The trend appears to have been started in August by two Belgian teenagers who filmed themselves hiding in a wardrobe and coming out into the store after it had closed. The pair posted the video on YouTube, where it has been viewed more than 1.7 million times. Since then, about 10 illegal sleepovers have taken place across the globe, including Australia. Most recently, two 14-year-girls in Sweden avoided charges after being caught in the store after hours. (I think they should introduce suitable punishments for these unwanted overnight guests. Forget fines or jail ... give them a punishment they’ll never forget - like trying to assemble a large multi-level wardrobe with a 40 page instruction manual or an 8 piece outdoor dining setting that comes in 22 boxes ... that’ll teach ‘em!)

CHINA HAS FINALLY PRODUCED ITS OWN FULLY HOME-PRODUCED BALLPOINT PEN after years of trying to master the complex techniques involved in making the delicate tips. Despite manufacturing 80% of the world’s ballpoint pens, the country had previously been unable to produce the small but crucial component. Now a state-owned steel firm has announced it has finally cracked it. So why did a country renowned for ingeniously replicating technology struggle to create an everyday item for so long? Firstly, it did not have machines with the precision needed to cut a tiny ball-bearing accurately, meaning the balls had to be imported from Switzerland. And despite being the world’s largest steel producer, China was unable to produce the high quality steel to case the ink-dispensing ball, resulting in the steel being imported from or Japan. (Gosh where would we be without pens in 2017? I still keep a few beside my computer. They’re great if you have an itchy ear or can’t find a spoon to stir your coffee. Good on ya China!)

BOB RENPHREY HATES FRIDAY THE 13TH! He has decided to stay in bed every subsequent Friday the 13th because of a spate of bad luck he’d suffered on that unlucky day, such as: walking through a plate glass door, getting made redundant, falling into a river, writing off four and putting his wife in the hospital after hitting her in the head with a stick meant for the dog. After he died in 1998 his funeral was on (you guessed it) Friday the 13th. (The good news for Bob is - there is only one Friday the 13th left in 2017 and that’s in October.) Meet The Manager Vaughn Bennison - 7RPH

How many volunteers are involved? - About 85, each of whom comes in sometimes once a week, sometimes 2 or 3 times a week and sometimes once a month. They do a number of different roles, it’s not like most community stations where we have got lots and lots of announcers. We have people who come in and do production so we term production as simply recording, editing and building the audio content. Nigel Green (pictured) is our Wednesday presenter from 1-3pm. He also provides information on TV guides. We have regular presenters and they are the people who are the main force behind delivering the programme whether that is somebody who compilles all the data and reads it or whether they are the person who operates the console and delivers the programme live to the listener and we have people who simply are readers and they come in and are people who are really good at reading aloud and they come in and get the written content and they read it.

As a radio listener is there any one in particular that you really enjoyed listening to in radio that you mentored or admired? - It has been such a long time since I spent a lot of time listening to radio to be honest. My one foray into regular radio program presenting is a program that I do for blind citizens in Australia called New Horizons and it’s a 15 minute weekly program for blind and vision impairment issues and the guy who started that program is Neville Kerr and he was a terrific broadcaster and he is very much someone that I have admired over the years.

Away from radio - what do you like do on the weekend? - I am an avid vintage, hi fi and audio collector. I love to collect records, record players, cassette decks, reel to reel machines and all of those sorts of things. I am also an amateur radio enthusiast and I have a licence and apart from that reading books and that’s about all I have in spare time for at the moment and music I suppose.
