A ride out to Remember Barry Trotter Bishop Wilton

A toast to Barry before the 20 Gerries headed up Worsendale Many thanks to Cheryl & Vanessa who supplied Sloe Gin and shot ‘glasses’

The ride took us from Skidby to Newbald, Kiplingcoates, Goodmanham, Londesborough, . We thought Barry might have been watching over and having a chuckle as there had been 4 punctures by the time we arrived at Bishop Wilton! After a warming climb up Worsendale on to Thixendale, Fridaythorpe for lunch, return to Willerby via Huggate.

The race format is 4th Cat to race from 18:30 for 40 mins and 2/3 Cat from 19:20 for 45 mins. There is still discussion going on but at present the full series of 10 races will be excellent value at £80. The dates have been set to run in the 'off week' of road race league but the series lasts longer so condenses into 1 every week for the last 3 weeks. Dates are as follows Round 1 - 10/05/18 Peturia Round 2 - 24/05/18 Hull Thursday RC Round 3 - 07/06/18 VC Round 4 - 21/06/18 Squadra Round 5 - 05/07/18 Wilsons Wheels Round 6 - 19/07/18 Cliff Pratt Team Round 7 - 02/08/18 Kingswood CC Round 8 - 16/08/18 Woldtop Actif Round 9 - 23/08/18 City RC Round 10 - 30/08/18 All Clubs/Teams TBC I am in discussions with group organiser about HTRC piloting a youth race to run before the 4th Cats so details on that to be confirmed. Hull Thursday Paper Chase October 2017: Paul Kilvington & Amanda Dean

The Kilvo Paint Mobile ready to ride:

Paul and Doug headed out at 8am to mark out the route.

The Rules of the Game

All the route is on tarmac although there are some sections of route that are muddy due to farm traffic etc. The trail will consist of 12 inch dashes of orange road marking paint (As used on the Big G). It will be laid in the left-hand gutter of the road. Cycle paths, country lanes, laybys, and disused roads and bridleways may all be used.

Occasionally arrows may be used to indicate the route. This is for safety reasons to stop riders crossing busy roads etc. Arrows will not be used as false trials.

If the trail is laid on a cycle path please ride on the cycle path – If you ride on the road you may miss the trail and end up going off course – you have been warned.

False trails may be laid. However only 2 or 3 paint marks will be put down on any false trail. Therefore, if you pass 4 paint marks after a junction, you can safely assume it is not a false trail and crack on.

If you get hopelessly lost, or need assistance, please call Doug or Paul and we will help you re-join the route.

Dawn running the signing on at Skidby Mill at 9:30am.

Graeme holds the umbrella.

The umbrella tells you about the weather!

A good turnout of 17 riders (a couple missed the photo and Amanda is behind the camera)

Despite the weather's best efforts the Paper Chase went ahead as planned and hopefully everybody had a good time. 17 riders started despite the heavy rain and strong wind. 14 made it back to the finish at the White Horse in Hutton Cranswick. This was the first time many riders had ridden the Paper Chase and it seems it took some of them a little while to fully understand the format of it.

First back to the finish was Mike Pickering very closely followed by Rob Stones. In third place having ridden around most of East Yorkshire was Neil Dean followed by John Galbraith. Most of the rest of the riders came back in a big bunch together sometime later. The food supplied by the pub was quickly devoured by the hungry riders who had taken a real battering in the wet and windy weather.

Prizes sponsored by Matt Porter at Sportive HQ and Ed Neilson at Vive Le Velo were presented to the first four riders and Amanda Dean as First Lady.

The route took riders from Skidby to Beverley via Bentley and the cycle path before heading down Shepherd Lane and Long Lane to the minster. East through Beverley to Weel and Tickton and then Leven. A loop through Burshill to Brandesburton and then North Frodingham and Beeford. The lanes then got muddy through Gembling, Kelk, Harpham and Lowesthorpe. The final loop went through Cattleholme, Wansford and Skerne to the finish. Many riders missed the first turn to Bentley and ended up at Walkington.

Social Scene November 2017 Hull Thursday rc

Although the route was only 36 miles some riders ended up clicking over 50!

Massive thanks to Dawn and Doug Jaram helped with the organisation. Another event will be organised in the spring when hopefully riders will know what to expect and not get as lost. Thanks to everyone for their support and turning up on such a foul morning.

The £5 entry fee provided everyone with a lunch and covered the running costs and the very useful prizes which had a bike cleaning theme - all bikes were utterly mud covered after the wonderful and interesting route that Paul had devised 

Neil Dean’s story: Paul had told me where the first paint mark could be found, so I led all the riders down the cycle path turning onto the road towards Walkington. Stopping to take my rain jacket off, I deliberately let everyone get ahead of me so they could work out whether to turn left towards or continue to Walkington. Meanwhile, one rider who’d been at the rear of the group continued unnoticed along the cycle path towards Beverley as he’d already ridden along this paint covered track on his way to Skidby that morning.

Walkington appeared to be the favourite, so I tore after Richard Dean and Richard Guymer and let them lead me up to the traffic light junction. We went left, right and straight on but there was not a drop of paint to be seen. Lots of other riders had now arrived at this junction and we all headed off north to the next junction where, once again, there was no paint. What the hell is going on? We haven’t missed a junction. Oh yes we have!

Rob Stones and Mandy Dean had separately decided to check out the turn to Bentley that the rest of us had stormed past, and were rewarded with paint marks heading towards Beverley. Mandy followed it to Long Lane where, seeing Mike Pickering on the right about to do a U-turn, she turned left towards Beverley. Mike soon caught and passed her only to meet Rob coming the opposite way. Mike and Rob continued on together and Mandy later joined up with Ed Walker.

Meanwhile the two Richards headed north towards Dog Kennel Lane and Bracken, a big bunch headed into Beverley while I took in the sights of Cherry Burton, Leconfield, Beswick, Hutton Cranswick (passing the White Horse), Skerne, Wansford, North Froddingham and Brandesburton. I was confident that Paul would eventually realise the error of his ways and start putting paint under my wheels!

While riding from North Froddingham to Brandesburton I encountered John Galbraith heading in the opposite direction. Either he was as lost as I was or he was on the trail. Just to be sure I continued to the village and saw the paint marks, then turned round and went after John at speed, determined not to be last. The rest is history.

NOT F..F..F..FADE AWAY - ROLLING STONES: John Ulyatt

Today's Gerries ride was in honour of the late great Barry Trotter who passed away recently. He certainly will not F..F..FADE away from our memories.

36 of us met at Skidby Mill on this WEDNESDAY 25/10 including many Hull THURSDAY members for a ride to FRIDAYthorpe where we SAT in the SUN listening to THE HAPPY MONDAYS and RUBY TUESDAY. (Bit of artistic licence there!). From Skidby we headed up to WALKINGton (THE DOG) and Etton (Birthplace of Thomas Carlsberg who emigrated to Canada in 1818 and went on to found The Carlsberg brewery in 1840 - not a lot of people know that!). Onward through the BEAUTIFUL SOUTH Dalton before a left turn through the PARK(LIFE) and an (ALL) RIGHT (NOW) turn towards Middleton on the Wolds.

Here we turned left along the ridge to the site of David Hockney’s Bigger Trees painting. Another left turn to another site of Hockney’s paintings where we descended the steep hill into (SMOKE ON THE) WARTER. The SKY was a DEEP PURPLE at this stage. Another slog up to Huggate - it was here that DA DOO RON RON started to suffer. He's an EASTENDER so not used to (FAITH) HILLs!! Fridaythorpe beckoned as we SHOT (THE SHERIFF) down the 3 mile descent to Seaways Cafe - One of THE best cafes in the area. Beans on TOAST and a Mugga of LEAPY LEE = £4.25

COME ON Lads, lets HIT THE ROAD JACK someone SHOUTed so off we went via Huggate/North Dalton/Lund/Holme on the Wolds/Bishop Burton to the (EDWIN) STARR Inn/Willerby to have a few drinks in honour of Barry.

A l..l..lovely l..l..lovely day - I REMEMBER YOU Bazza from all the Gerries. Just the 60 miles today in sunny/cool/breezy conditions.

Plans are afoot to run a sportive next July in honour of Bazza. Phil Trotter has suggested calling it Trotters International Touring Sportive (T.I.T.S) - I LIKE IT!!!

NICE to see 2 of Barry's children Jane and Phil in the pub. Also Hull City legend Deano (a long- time family friend) joined us too. Just lovely to see and what a great way of remembering Bazza.

IF I FELL - THE BEATLES: John Ulyatt

The (DONNA) SUMMER has gone and THE AUTUMN LEAVES are falling as we head towards (MARK) WYNTER.

(MICKEY) MOST of us were wearing FOUR TOPS YESTERDAY as The Gerries met at Skidby Mill. 31 of us in total as we split into our usual 2 groups - The Peleton and The Autobus.

We headed off via Bishop Burton, Etton, HOLME HOLME ON THE WOLDS (Where the deer etc etc...), Goodmanham, Londesborough, Pocklington to Allerthorpe Lakes cafe. We were queuing through THE DOORS. Beans on TOAST with a couple of EGGY POP's on top and a pot of 10CC = £6.00. Should I CHER a piece of cake (RITA) ORA maid of honour? Nah!!

Our return JOURNEY was via Bielby/Everingham/Harswell to CLIFFE (RICHARD) where the road is in the process of been relaid for the past 2 months.

Jim was ADAM ANT that we could get through despite all THE MEN AT WORK and machinery. All went well for the first couple of miles when suddenly the surface became unrideable. IMAGINE an 18th century road and I thought IF I FELL on that I'd hurt myself. Well sure enough, I did fall and hurt my ELBOW/Knee and HIP(PY HIPPY SHAKE) and also ended up with a BADFINGER!! Still a bit MIKKI AND GRIFF this morning but I FEEL FINE now.

I think we'll keep well away from that road for a couple of months.

Up the hill to Hotham and past The Hotham Arms (One of the best pubs in East Yorkshire where

Social Scene November 2017 Hull Thursday rc

lots of the gang will be there this Sunday for lunch) and across the main road into Newbald and up the infamous Trundlegate.

Dick and DA DO RON RON took the EASY option and went up the main drag. We all congregated at the TOP(LOADER) where we bumped into a group of Hull University students who were exploring the local (CLEO) LAINEs and they were well impressed.

Our route then took us across High Hunsley CROSSROADS, through LITTLE BY LITTLE Weighton for the fast descent to The Half Moon in Skidby for a couple of pints of BLACK (BETTY) Sheep.

Usual good craic of bull and banter.

Home for a quick shower and a walk to Anlaby to childmind for the evening.

60 miles on a very SUNNY and KOOL day.

PS - poor old FATS DOMINO - AIN'T THAT A SHAME (thanks Pete K!)

A Recollection of the East Yorkshire Road Race League 2017: Mike McAllister

The following is a recollection of my personal experiences riding the 2017 and my third edition of the East Yorkshire Road Race League. I was hoping to improve on the previous year though at the grand old age of 50 you start to wonder when you've hit the ceiling.

Sproatley - Marshalling Fun Marshalling with Ben Warner, nice bright cool evening, we chatted about bikes in-between the stress of the race passing us whilst hoping for traffic to not appear. Alex Dalton won on the night, marshalling duties stopped either of us seeing the finish, but at least we got on the points board.

Little Weighton - Near Hyperthermia We started with dry and pleasant evening; unfortunately this only lasted around a lap or so. Rain ensued and the temperature plummeted, I lost my mojo after a couple of laps of being sprayed in the face. When the faster groups caught us I was recovering from an effort, Nicky Moore and a few other riders went with the group leaving me isolated with a couple of riders for the rest of the night. Post-race I'd completely forgotten my Bear Grylls training, the bit about not keeping wet layers on. I'd been wearing a thick base layer which got soaked during the race, wanting to get home ASAP I left it on. By time I'd got to Cottingham my teeth started chattering, a quick change of base layer fixed me up nicely. A wet item of clothing is roughly 20 times less efficient than a dry one for heat retention, if I recall Bear correctly.

Walkington - Descending Blues I was dreading the Bluestone Bottoms descent after a bit of a moment last year, so I put myself at the front of the Group for when we hit the descent. Being at the front really helped build my confidence, and when things became a bit tight near the end of the race I felt ok. Once we got to the very last corner I found myself in a great position and managed to carry quite a bit of speed up the ramp to the finish line. I wish I'd pushed harder as I had quite a bit left in the tank, however the front of the bunch sprinted away but I finished in a respectable group.

Etton - Group 2 Promotion Andy Abbott took an executive decision to split our Group with me starting for the first time in Group 2 along with a few other novices. I was a little envious of Charlotte D and Rob Stones being in Group 1 as Group 1 stayed away on the previous year. A stiff westerly wind made the back road from South Dalton hard and a couple of Group 3 riders kept the pace pretty uncomfortable at times for the fledgling Group 2. We never got a great rhythm, but got to within a minute of Group 1 who'd started with a 2 minute gap. Charlotte and Rob picked up points, which was great for them, though left me feeling a little jealous!

Racing Scene November 2017 Hull Thursday rc

Kilham - Minor Bunch Sprint Win Felt really good on the night, and the lumpy Kilham circuit is becoming my favourite. We got off to a great start but some slower riders were sitting on the front for far too long on the descents. On the last but one lap I got sat on the back of the scratch group through Rudston and fancied going with them up the hill but common sense or lack of confidence won on the night and I let them go. I ended up winning a minor group bunch sprint with Dave Millson and Nicky Moore for company; it was great fun and my favourite moment of the season. Nicky nearly stole my minor glory making a very sneaky attack near the finish line.

Etton - First Crash Combine harvesters and tractors caused major disruption, farmers often have small weather windows to get their crops in so we've got to respect them otherwise we'll all starve! I'd been getting around pretty well, doing my turn and putting some cheeky gaps in to try and keep the speed up. When Group 3 caught us and started leaving us I decided to jump across to them. I'd let the gap get to 10 or so metres but still just managed to latch on. Feeling chuffed with my effort as most of the rest of Group 2 were now dropped I duly started to go through and do a turn. I was puffing a bit going through and the group was around 20 or so in size so it took a while to get to the front. Once at the front I blew my stack, so much so, embarrassingly I feigned a mechanical and stuck my left hand up in surrender. I was duly dropped, and licking my wounds was quickly caught back up by my comrades in Group 2. Now fighting for scraps managed to get to the front and outside of the Group just before the final corner. As we started to go up the final climb I was clipped by another rider leaving me static at the roadside to watch my group ride away. The other rider met me at the finish line, he apologised, we shook hands and everything was put right, what a gent.

Little Weighton - Wild Horses Good weather for the evening and I was feeling up for the race and things were going well until the groups came together. As we got to the really fast bend on the way to Rowley a horse rider had a bit of a scare which caused the horse to rear up. The field split with me ending up in the one at the back. I finished in large bunch with Dave Millson. Dave managed to pick off a few places just before the line, well done Dave.

Walkington - Last Climb Great weather and feeling pretty strong, really fancied it tonight. We caught Group 1 after a couple of laps and late in the race Group 3 caught us. Half way up the last climb towards High Hunsley I got dropped. I'd kept picking wheels that kept getting dropped forcing me constantly put efforts in to re-join the group when I should have put a bigger effort in sooner and got to the front. I think if Nicky Moore or Dave Millson had been around we'd have stuck with the group.

Racing Scene November 2017 Hull Thursday rc

I got caught by the Scratch group on the last corner, and it was great to watch them duke it out for the line. I was also impressed I could still see them after going up the climb with them. Overall I was really pleased with my efforts but need to be more careful of what wheels to sit on.

Presentation Night The presentation night is at The Black Horse, a great venue, very welcoming and they put on some great food for us. Andy Abbott presented the awards for the season with Steve Guymer winning the league overall, well done Steve. Steve's Dad, Richard, came second in the East Yorkshire Road Race League in 1890 riding a Penny Farthing. Steve explained how chuffed he was to finally have the Cup back in the family, we were all proud as punch for him. I was joking about Richard winning in 1890; Richard actually came second in 1982.

Next Year I'll be going back to Tommy Coyle's Gym and hopefully getting out on a few longer weekend rides in the weeks running up to the start of next season. I keep hearing very good reports about the new Ennerdale Circuit so will have to check it out and see what everyone's getting excited about.

Thanks Thanks again to everybody involved with East Yorkshire Road Race League from Organisers, Drivers, First Aiders, Marshals, Photographers and the riders. It's been a real privilege to race the League, long may it continue. Mike McAllister, HTRC Press Officer

Pit Stop: The Spotted Duck, Fitling: Amanda Dean

Fitling is a hamlet in the , in the area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 7 miles (11 km) north-west of town centre. It lies 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the B1242 road.

And it happens to have a lovely café if you are in the area, well worth a visit.

Plenty of room for bikes away from the road.

We had quite a group and the café had been pre-warned. The service was quick and friendly.

Good pricing e.g. paninis, sandwiches, baked potatoes, breakfasts around £5- £6.

And a good selection of cakes available:
