George Ely was a life member of Hull Thursday Road Club. He joined the club in 1931 and became a national cycling star. In 1933 George won 9 consecutive open and club Time Trials and he went on to break and set many course records. George died in April 2006 and it was his family’s request that an event be held in his memory. George was known for liking longer distance or hard courses and I am sure he would feel honoured to have this event carry his name. DJ spoke with Elliot, one of our Youth riders, to find out what the club could do better to attract, develop and keep more younger riders. We will try again with some youth orientated events at Ennerdale Circuit. It might be useful if we can recall the club bikes, but awkward to store? Offers to spit and store at different members’ homes. Some of the ideas for youth events were: Races before Ennerdale crit races summer or autumn, shorter events similar to very successful ‘Park Runs’. IN ATTENDANCE 15 members were present and signed the attendance record: Neil Dean, Richard Guymer, Dave Millson, Mike Kilgour, Mike Pickering, Andy Abbott, George Leighton, Lee Coulson, Mike McAllister, Neil Prewer, Paul Campbell, Phil McCormick, Doug Jaram, Richard Dean, Andy Carroll 2. APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRPERSON: Richard Dean was nominated as chairperson 3. APOLOGIES: The following sent their apologies: Mandy Dean, Jymmy Trevor 4. NEW CLUB MEMBERS: Dave Tyas and Mike Tyas 5. PREVIOUS AGM MINUTES: The minutes of the AGM held on 12th February 2018 were accepted as a true record. Proposed: N Dean, seconded: M Pickering 6. MATTERS ARISING: Committee have reviewed rules and now have a ‘Constitution’ and ‘Rules for Championships & Club Records’ 7. TREASURER’S REPORT 1. The balance in the main account remains healthy but is down £2,800 on last year. This level of reduction is manageable now, but alternative sources of income will need to be found to support the Club Rewards Scheme and the Racing Incentive Scheme. Please note that both these schemes need approval at the AGM for them to continue. 2. We currently have 140 members compared to 141 at the end of 2017. During 2018 we had 16 new members compared to 14 in 2017. 3. As was agreed at the 2017 AGM, new subscription rates from 1st January 2018 were: Under 16 years £5 no change 16-17 years £10 from £7 18-64 years £15 from £12 65+ years £10 from £7 As a result, income from subscriptions rose by £200. 4. The surplus in clothing is down slightly compared to 2017, but that is because most of the stock in blue and yellow kit has been sold. Members now purchase Black & White kit directly from Pactimo, although some Spin11 kit remains on stock. 5. There is no expenditure shown in the accounts for the Keith Carter RR or the Vic Sutton Memorial RR as the organisers paid all expenses before passing the surplus to the club. 6. The TT Series always aims to break even, and in 2018 made a small surplus.

  • The Humber Metro
The Humber Metro The Humber Metro is a very futuristic concept, depending, as it does, on the existence of the Humber tunnel between Goxhill and the approach to Paragon station, proposed as part of HS10 in the ‘HS Eastern Routes and Service Plans’ article. As noted there, although the tunnel will be built to GC gauge, it is intended from the outset to be shared with Regional Metro traffic between Cleethorpes and Hull, which will at least initially be of UK loading gauge. The Humber Metro covers the area from Selby and Goole in the west to Cleethorpes and Withernsea in the east, and from Grimsby in the south to Bridlington in the north. The core section, built to GC-gauge, as all new infrastructure should be, runs in tunnel under the centre of Hull between Paragon (LL) and Cannon St. (former H&B) stations, with a connection to the Hornsea / Withernsea lines just before Wilmington, and another to the Beverley line at Cottingham. Other than that (and the Humber tunnel, of course,) it takes over the routes of existing and former, long closed, branches. The proposed metro services fall into two groups, either cross-river or west-east along the north bank. The services of the first group are: 2tph Cleethorpes – New Clee – Grimsby Docks – Grimsby Town – West Marsh – Great Coates – Healing – Stallingborough – Habrough – Ulceby – Thornton Abbey – Goxhill – Hull Paragon (LL) – George St. – Cannon St. – Beverley Rd. – Jack Kaye Walk – Cottingham – Beverley – Arram – Lockington – Hutton Cranswick – Great Driffield – Nafferton – Lowthorpe – Burton Agnes – Carnaby – Bridlington 2tph Cleethorpes – New Clee – Grimsby Docks – Grimsby Town – West Marsh – Great Coates – Healing – Stallingborough – Habrough – Ulceby – Thornton Abbey – Goxhill – Hull Paragon (LL) – George St.

The Board, advised by the Oral Health Advisory Group, wishes to examine evidence-based options for addressing this problem. Amongst possible options may be community water fluoridation (CWF). In the first instance, and without commitment, it is desired to gain an understanding of whether CWF would be technically feasible for Hull, an indication of costs, and the extent to which any scheme might need to extend beyond the City boundary to be technically viable. Public Health England (PHE) holds, on behalf of the Secretary of State for Health, the legal agreements with water companies for all CWF schemes in England. PHE has supported the City’s Director of Public Health to develop a specification for a phased feasibility assessment from Yorkshire Water Services Ltd (Yorkshire Water) to assist those deliberations.” 1.2 Specification for the study. 1.2.1 Meeting legislative requirements. Community water fluoridation is governed by specific legislation within the Water Industry Act 1991 as amended most recently by the Health and Social Care Act 2012, together with secondary legislation in The Water Fluoridation (Proposals and Consultation)(England) Regulations 2013 and The Water Supply (Fluoridation Indemnities)(England) Regulations 2005.

  • Locating the Site of the Battle of Brunanburh (937) V4 by and © Adrian C Grant (1St Version Posted 7Th February 2019, This Revision Posted 5Th August 2019)
Locating the site of the Battle of Brunanburh (937) v4 by and © Adrian C Grant (1st version posted 7th February 2019, this revision posted 5th August 2019) Abstract In this paper I argue that the Battle of Brunanburh (937) took place on the old Roman Road between Brough-on-Humber (Petuaria/Civitas Parisiorum) and South Cave in the East Riding of Yorkshire. This updated version has been triggered both by comments gratefully received from readers of previous drafts and because two alternative candidate sites not wholly inconsistent with my original proposal have come to my attention since version 3 was uploaded. So, whereas the original paper dismissed other proposals mainly by disregarding them, this revision now extends the argument to examine the claims of as many rival sites as I can identify, showing why they are to be discounted. The basis of the positive argument for Brough lies in (a) understanding the military objectives (b) the evidence of the Annals and (c) the relevance of Beverley Minster. It is demonstrated that the place-name evidence is consistent with this site. It is suggested that the huge proportion of church dedications in the area to "All Saints" can be seen as further circumstantial evidence. Preface Following up my researches into the 12 famous battles of "king" Arthur, published in late 2017 ("Arthur: Legend, Logic & Evidence"), my attention turned to the process and timescale of the Anglo-Saxon take over of post-Roman Britain. Amongst other things this caused me to consider the Siege of Lindisfarne and the battles of Catterick, Daegsastan and Caer Greu.
