2020 Student Research Week Program 22nd Annual 2 Research Week 0 March 31-April 3 2 0 Research Week 2020 Research Week is a collaboration between the Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Activity, the Office of Graduate Studies, and the Division of Research to highlight the scholarly and creative activities of UNK’s faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students. This multidisciplinary event serves as both a celebration of the fantastic work being done on our campus and as an intellectual platform for faculty and students to disseminate their work. Student Research Day is a mainstay on UNK’s campus and is an event to celebrate the amazing work of our talented students and their integration into the research enterprise. With Research Week, we are expanding our efforts with a stand-alone Graduate Research day and the unveiling of our annual faculty research magazine, New Frontiers. Please join us in celebrating the work and accomplishments of the UNK community. Matthew R. Bice, Ph.D., Director Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Activity Mark R. UNK has a broad-based culture that supports students being involved in research, enhances the student experience, and provides skills that are transferable beyond the classroom or laboratory. The positive effects of the research-centered campus culture diffuses into student learning, attitude, and career choices with both professional and personal benefits including: • Understanding research methodologies within a specific discipline • Independent work and thought • Problem-solving • Written and oral communication • Graduate school/research opportunities • Career insight • Self-efficacy Within the scope of research, the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity supports the Undergraduate Research Fellow (URF) program and Summer Student Research Program (SSRP), which are both designed to create opportunities for undergraduate students to engage in student-led independent research studies. These programs provide opportunities for students to experience research/creative activities outside the classroom and creating a sense of "ownership" over the project. Each program contributes to a community of scholars that promotes student learning through doing. TheUndergraduate Research Fellows (URF) Program is designed to allow undergraduate students the opportunity to work under the supervision of a faculty member. This student-led research project allows students to develop an understanding of scholarly inquiry, skills associated with research and creative activity, and an ability to design and complete your own scholarly projects. TheSummer Student Research Program (SSRP) is an aggressive program spanning the summer months. Students and faculty mentors set forth with the goal of completing an entire project over the summer. Students can experience challenges and apply their knowledge and skills to solve new problems while also learning to understand the differences and connections between various fields of study. 6 | Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Activity UNK Graduate Programs Art 308.865.8082 Kinesiology & Sports Sciences 308.865.8331 Art Education (MAEd) Athletic Training (MATR) • Classroom Education Emphasis • General Physical Education (MAEd) • Museum Education Emphasis • • Sports Administration • Recreation and Leisure Biology 308.865.1589 Exercise Science (MAEd) Biology (MS) Physical Education – Master Teacher (MAEd) • Thesis • Pedagogy • • Non-Thesis• • Special Populations • 308.865.8346 MBA Modern Languages 308.865.8082 Business 308.865.8240 LTC Spanish Education (MAEd) • Business Administration (MBA) Spanish Graduate Certificate • • Accounting ◆ • Generalist • Music 308.865.8618 • Human Resources ◆ Music Education (MAEd) • • Human Services • • Marketing • Science/Math Education 308.865.8043 Long-Term Care Management (MS) Science/Math Education (MSEd) • Communication Disorders 308.865.8300 Teacher Education 308.865.8513 Speech/Language Pathology (MSEd) Curriculum & Instruction (MAEd) • Early Childhood Education • Counseling & School Psychology 308.865.8508 • Elementary Education • Clinical Mental Health Counseling (MSEd) ◆ • Reading/Special Education • Counseling (EdS) • English as a Second Language • Drug & Alcohol (Certificate) • • Secondary Education • Higher Education Student Affairs (MSEd) • • Instructional Effectiveness • School Counseling Elementary (MSEd) ◆ • Transitional Certification • School Counseling Secondary (MSEd) ◆ • Montessori – Early Childhood ◆ School Psychology (EdS) • Montessori – Elementary I ◆ • School Librarian • Education Administration 308.865.8512 • STEM (Science, Tech, Engineering, & Math) • School Principalship PK-8 or 7-12 (MAEd) • Instructional Technology (MSEd) School Superintendent (EdS) • • Instructional Technology • Supervisor of Special Education (MAEd) • • Information Technology • • Leadership in Instructional Technology • English 308.865.8299 • School Librarian • English (MA) Reading PK-12 (MAEd) • • Literature Special Education (MAEd) • Creative Writing • High Ability Education (Gifted) • • Children’s and Adolescent literature • Advanced Practitioner • • Writing • ° Behavioral Intervention Specialist • ° Assistive Technology Specialist • History 308.865.8766 ° Inclusive and Collaboration Specialist • History (MA) ° Functional Academic Skills & Independent Living • • Thesis • • Special Education Generalist • • Non-Thesis • • Public History • For information contact: • Public History (Certificate) • UNK Graduate Studies 800.717.7881 | 308.865.8500 | [email protected] •Online Program ◆Blended Program Graduate Programs | 7 Graduate Poster Abstracts Fine

Come with me. A generation ago, the astronomer Carl Sagan stood here and launched hundreds of millions of us on a great adventure: the exploration of the universe revealed by science. It's time to get going again. We're about to begin a journey that will take us from the infinitesimal to the infinite, from the dawn of time to the distant future. We'll explore galaxies and suns and worlds, surf the gravity waves of space-time, encounter beings that live in fire and ice, explore the planets of stars that never die, discover atoms as massive as suns and universes smaller than atoms. Cosmos is also a story about us. It's the saga of how wandering bands of hunters and gatherers found their way to the stars, one adventure with many heroes.

Snail human by author, 2018 Abstract This thesis examines changing boundaries between childhood and adulthood in twenty-first century British society and culture through the concept of growth in order to investigate alternatives to conventional ideas of growing up. It is the first in-depth academic study to consider growing sideways as a distinct and important discourse that challenges, and provides an alternative to, the discourse of upwards growth, previously identified as a pervasive grand narrative that privileges adulthood (Trites, 2014).

INFORMATION TO USERS The most advanced technology has been used to photo graph and reproduce this manuscript from the microfilm master. UMI films the text directly from the original or copy submitted. Thus, some thesis and dissertation copies are in typewriter face, while others may be from any type of computer printer. The quality of this reproduction is dependent upon the quality of the copy submitted. Broken or indistinct print, colored or poor quality illustrations and photographs, print bleedthrough, substandard margins, and improper alignment can adversely affect reproduction. In the unlikely event that the author did not send UMI a complete manuscript and there are missing pages, these will be noted. Also, if unauthorized copyright material had to be removed, a note will indicate the deletion. Oversize materials (e.g., maps, drawings, charts) are re produced by sectioning the original, beginning at the upper left-hand corner and continuing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. Each original is also photographed in one exposure and is included in reduced form at the back of the book. These are also available as one exposure on a standard 35mm slide or as a 17" x 23" black and white photographic print for an additional charge. Photographs included in the original manuscript have been reproduced xerographically in this copy. Higher quality 6" x 9" black and white photographic prints are available for any photographs or illustrations appearing in this copy for an additional charge. Contact UMI directly to order. • English-K'iche' Dictionary
ENGLISH-K'ICHE' DICTIONARY A reveral of the K'iche'-English Dictionary by Allen J. Christenson Bringham Young Univeristy available at: http://www.famsi.org/mayawriting/dictionary/christenson/quidic_complete.pdf Introduction Allen J. Christenson prepared the K'iche'-English Dictionary while conducting field work in highland Maya linguistics and ethnography from 1978-1985. He elicited his entries through collaboration with native K'iche' speakers in the communities of Momostenango (as well as its dependent aldeas of Canquixaja, Nimsitu, and Panca) and Totonicapan (and its dependent aldeas of Nimasak and Cerro de Oro). The dictionary is unpublished and is offered to FAMSI as a tool for research. It is available at: http://www.famsi.org/mayawriting/dictionary/christenson/quidic_complete.pdf In 2006, Richard Renner discovered the dictionary from the link at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%27iche%27_language He reversed Christenson's K'iche'-English Dictionary, separating the English definitions into separate entries, and then recombining identical Engish entries that came from different K'iche' entries. It is also offered as a tool for research, and also for those Guatemalans and North Americans who want to better understand each other. Notes on usage: 1. As with any translation dictionary, it is best to check a word on both sides before using it. That is, if you look up an English word to find a K'iche' word with the same meaning, it is best to check that K'iche' word on Christenson's original K'iche'-Engish Dictionary. This is especially true for Engish homonyms (words with different unrelated meanings; or different words with the same spelling), such as duck, lead and spring.

  • Meiermovies Short Films by Star Rating
MeierMovies Short Films by Star Rating Theatrically released motion pictures of 40 minutes or less For every great feature, there’s a great short, and this list attempts to chronicle just some of those tiny masterpieces – and their not-so-masterful counterparts. For films to make this list, they must have played in at least one film festival or showcase, or theatrical venue, for a paying audience. Films shown only on television (or available only on DVD, Blu-ray, video or online) are reserved for my Television list. Also not included here are student films and similar projects that have never been presented at a theatrical venue that charged admission to viewers. (Please note that this is slightly more lenient than the qualifications for the feature- film lists, which require that a film of more than 40 minutes play at least two major festivals, or have a limited or general release.) Theatrical newsreels (pre-television) and theatrically released trailers are not eligible for this list, although mini-documentaries and travelogues (typically playing alongside trailers and B-features in the 1930-1950s) are. Short films shown at theme parks and museums are eligible, but not if they rely on animatronic/interactive/live elements. Shorts produced for timed competitions, such as 48-hour or 24-hour projects, are not included here, unless those films were subsequently screened at a second venue. The ratings system is the same as that of the feature-film list, just with no half or quarter stars. That difference is due to simplification and also to the fact that it’s admittedly difficult, and perhaps somewhat unfair, to compare a 2-minute film to a 40- minute one using quarter stars.
