DESCRIPTORS *Adventure Education; *Experiential Learning; *Games; *Group Activities; Group Unity; Outdoor Education; *Physical Activities; Problem Solving; *Self Esteem; Trust (Psychology) ABSTRACT This anthology of over 160 group activities is intended to help teachers, counselors, therapists, camp directors, and other group leaders to encourage group participation and learning in a way that is immediate, involving, and enjoyable. It also provides a resource for curriculum planners in adventure-based counseling programs. At the heart of adventure programs, and tying the various activities together, are several learning goals:(1) increasing the participant's confidence and self-esteem; (2) increasing mutual support within a group;(3) improving agility and physical coordination; and (4) developing joy in one's physical self and in being with others. The games, trust activities, initiative problems, and stunts, grouped in different sections in this book, aim to engender trust, promote fun, and provide challenging experiences. Instructions for each activity are accompanied by photographs, diagrams, and symbols indicating indoor versus outdoor activity, activity level, specific tips, and notes or discussions in some entries. This book contains an index and descriptions of Project Adventure services and publications.(SV) *********************************************************************** Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made from the original document. *********************************************************************** \t ' .,,h,,,,,.Art otv ,;Tilt inirel 4Mit .1, i mmmmm a Ii):14 \11111111$ Ili iriiilit III ildilJ?)!Iiiiii!Iji 7171;"; ihh. 111411ffil. For example, the rock group Foreigner wrote a song called "Cold as Ice." The lyrics include a simile: You're as cold as ice You're willing to sacrifice our love In this example, the lyrics are not talking about the weather. Instead, they compare a woman to ice to show her emotions. Many songs can be used to teach about similes.

It is one of the most expressive art forms our society holds. Due this expressive nature, the art of making music can hold many social connotations and directly involve or relate itself to social occurrences, movements and ideals. This intertwined relationship thus allows music to be a conductor of social change by existing and working within these various social constructs. In addition, those involved with the music-making business are, by association, also potential conductors of social change.

  • African Drumming in Drum Circles by Robert J
African Drumming in Drum Circles By Robert J. Damm Although there is a clear distinction between African drum ensembles that learn a repertoire of traditional dance rhythms of West Africa and a drum circle that plays primarily freestyle, in-the-moment music, there are times when it might be valuable to share African drumming concepts in a drum circle. In his 2011 Percussive Notes article “Interactive Drumming: Using the power of rhythm to unite and inspire,” Kalani defined drum circles, drum ensembles, and drum classes. Drum circles are “improvisational experiences, aimed at having fun in an inclusive setting. They don’t require of the participants any specific musical knowledge or skills, and the music is co-created in the moment. The main idea is that anyone is free to join and express himself or herself in any way that positively contributes to the music.” By contrast, drum classes are “a means to learn musical skills. The goal is to develop one’s drumming skills in order to enhance one’s enjoyment and appreciation of music. Students often start with classes and then move on to join ensembles, thereby further developing their skills.” Drum ensembles are “often organized around specific musical genres, such as contemporary or folkloric music of a specific culture” (Kalani, p. 72). Robert Damm: It may be beneficial for a drum circle facilitator to introduce elements of African music for the sake of enhancing the musical skills, cultural knowledge, and social experience of the participants. PERCUSSIVE NOTES 8 JULY 2017 PERCUSSIVE NOTES 9 JULY 2017 cknowledging these distinctions, it may be beneficial for a drum circle facilitator to introduce elements of African music (culturally specific rhythms, processes, and concepts) for the sake of enhancing the musi- cal skills, cultural knowledge, and social experience Aof the participants in a drum circle.
