The Tension Between Artistic Autonomy and Social Engagement in Les Temps Nouveaux, 1896–1903 Laura Prins HCM 4 (1): 92–126 DOI: 10.18352/hcm.505 Abstract Between 1896 and 1903, Jean Grave, editor of the anarchist journal Les Temps Nouveaux, published an artistic album of original prints, with the collaboration of (avant-garde) artists and illustrators. While anar- chist theorists, including Grave, summoned artists to create social art, which had to be didactic and accessible to the working classes, artists wished to emphasize their autonomous position instead. Even though Grave requested ‘absolutely artistic’ prints in the case of this album, artists had difficulties with creating something for him, trying to com- bine their social engagement with their artistic autonomy. The artistic album appears to have become a compromise of the debate between the anarchist theorists and artists with anarchist sympathies. Keywords: anarchism, France, Neo-Impressionism, nineteenth century, original print Introduction While the Neo-Impressionist painter Paul Signac (1863–1935) was preparing for a lecture in 1902, he wrote, ‘Justice in sociology, har- mony in art: same thing’.1 Although Signac never officially published the lecture, his words have frequently been cited by scholars since the 1960s, who claim that they illustrate the widespread modern idea that any revolutionary avant-garde artist automatically was revolutionary in 92 HCM 2016, VOL. -

Berlin Calling a Documentary
Berlin Calling A Documentary Official Selection WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival 2014 Featuring Kastle Waserman Ben Waserman Written by Nigel Dick and Kastle Waserman Narrated by Nigel Dick Filmmakers Directed, Produced by Nigel Dick Edited by Eddi Ackit Music by Nigel Dick Press Contact: [email protected] Synopsis As a child growing up in suburban Houston, Kastle always knew the big dark cloud hung over her family. But her father, Ben, never talked about his past. He was busy building a business, raising his children and trying to be a like every other normal family. As Kastle went through a rebellious phase of punk rock, shaved her head into a Mohawk and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in journalism, she unknowingly touched a nerve of her father’s deepest fears of persecution and separation anxiety. It wasn’t until she reached her 30s that she began to turn her investigative skills on herself and her father to understand some of the emotions they carried with them and uncover what happened to him during his childhood in the dark days of Berlin and the Holocaust. The documentary “Berlin Calling” follows Kastle on a journey of discovery, through five cities – Berlin, Prague, Paris, Los Angeles and Houston. We see Kastle open the paperwork the Nazis kept on her family and hear her father’s firsthand account of being a child under Hitler’s oppression of the Jews and his time in a concentration camp. In her research, Kastle also makes a surprising discovery - the fate of a family member who disappeared in the early days of persecution. -

DATING WHILE FAT: NOTES FROM A HARMED LIFE ____________ A Project Presented to the Faculty of California State University, Chico ____________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in English ____________ by © Julie Ricks McClintic Spring 2018 DATING WHILE FAT: NOTES FROM A HARMED LIFE A Project by Julie Ricks McClintic Spring 2018 APPROVED BY THE INTERIM DEAN OF GRADUATE STUDIES: Sharon Barrios, Ph.D. APPROVED BY THE GRADUATE ADVISORY COMMITTEE: . Robert Davidson, Ph.D., Chair Paul Eggers, Ph.D. PUBLICATION RIGHTS No portion of this project may be reprinted or reproduced in any manner unacceptable to the usual copyright restrictions without the written permission of the author. iii DEDICATION To the most beautiful girls in the world, Áine and Olivia iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There are so many people to thank as I did not get to this place alone. Although writing is a solitary sport, we need to occasionally poke our heads out of our holes and say, “Hey! Anyone want to read this thing?” And it’s good to have someone(s) who will answer, even when, perhaps especially when, we are broken and not ourselves. It took a team of people to keep the fragmented parts of me together, however loosely that is, and pointed in the same direction, so the list is long. It’s a miracle I got here. I’ve told many people, “Grad school is harder than any job I’ve ever had. It’s every night, every weekend, every holiday, seven days a week.” Here I have discovered what it means—how to be present for everything I have needed to accomplish on my journey towards a graduate level degree—to be a professional. -

Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey (2014) Episode Scripts Based on Cosmos: A Personal Voyage by Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan & Steven Soter Directed by Brannon Braga, Bill Pope & Ann Druyan Presented by Neil deGrasse Tyson Composer(s) Alan Silvestri Country of origin United States Original language(s) English No. of episodes 13 (List of episodes) 1 - Standing Up in the Milky Way 2 - Some of the Things That Molecules Do 3 - When Knowledge Conquered Fear 4 - A Sky Full of Ghosts 5 - Hiding In The Light 6 - Deeper, Deeper, Deeper Still 7 - The Clean Room 8 - Sisters of the Sun 9 - The Lost Worlds of Planet Earth 10 - The Electric Boy 11 - The Immortals 12 - The World Set Free 13 - Unafraid Of The Dark 1 - Standing Up in the Milky Way The cosmos is all there is, or ever was, or ever will be. Come with me. A generation ago, the astronomer Carl Sagan stood here and launched hundreds of millions of us on a great adventure: the exploration of the universe revealed by science. It's time to get going again. We're about to begin a journey that will take us from the infinitesimal to the infinite, from the dawn of time to the distant future. We'll explore galaxies and suns and worlds, surf the gravity waves of space-time, encounter beings that live in fire and ice, explore the planets of stars that never die, discover atoms as massive as suns and universes smaller than atoms. Cosmos is also a story about us. It's the saga of how wandering bands of hunters and gatherers found their way to the stars, one adventure with many heroes. -
