But when Comrade Li, one of Mao’s political officers, moves into a room in their apartment, Ling begins to witness the gradual disintegration of her world. In an atmosphere of increasing mistrust, Ling fears for the safety of her neighbors and, soon, for herself and family. Over the course of four years, Ling manages to grow and blossom, even as she suffers more horrors than many people face in a lifetime.Drawing from her childhood experience, Ying Chang Compestine brings hope and humor to this compelling story for all ages about a girl fighting to survive during the Cultural Revolution in China. I have been looking for books for our literature curriculum written by and based on Asian cultures. Unfortunately, it isnt terribly easy to find something that both fits those categories and is a worthwhile book to read in class with middle school students. Oh, there are books out there, but so many of them are written by American or European authors about Asian cultures. -

Asian American Pacific Islander Booklist from the Bank Street College of Education’S Children’S Book Committee (CBC) 2021
Asian American Pacific Islander Booklist from the Bank Street College of Education’s Children’s Book Committee (CBC) 2021 Crimes against people of Asian/Pacific Islander descent have been gaining in frequency, in violence, and in breadth of Asian ethnic groups targeted. Those of us who have Asian roots know well that systemic discrimination against Asians in the U.S. is by no means a new phenomenon. It goes all the way back to the 1800s, when Chinese laborers started arriving in numbers to work, first in Gold Rush jobs, then on the Transcontinental Railroad. For grown-ups of all races who are having conversations with children to expand inquiry and empathy among Asian and non-Asian peoples, we offer a selection of books from the CBC Best Books of the Year, organized by age with child development in mind. Please note that this is not intended to be a comprehensive list. All activities on university campuses were called off. Students were assigned to designated dining halls, and were required to go to these places at scheduled times, to avoid all possible contagion of the disease. Surfing the Web, for the first time, became a legitimate “full-time job” for students. As was later acknowledged in the Chinese media, SARS cultivated a special emotional attachment to the Internet for a large number of the Chinese people, and I was one of them. Nine years later, my emotional ties to the Chinese Internet were fully developed into a dissertation, for which I am deeply indebted to my advisor Dr. Sung- Sheng Yvonne Chang. -
