Confirmation Classes Classes are overseen by our Minister and led by Sharon & Art Dworzak, are being offered this autumn with Confirmation taking place on About this morning’s choral and organ music… November 18. There are a series of six classes that began Sunday, September Felix Mendelssohn was a student of C.F. Zelter and A.W. Bach in Berlin, both 23. The classes will continue to take place during Sunday church services, one of conservative musical descendants (though not biological relatives) of J. S. Bach. which will be followed by lunch and a sharing time with Glenn (Sunday, Novem- In 1829, Mendelssohn resurrected Bach’s St. Matthew Passion for a notable ber 4). Mendelssohn’s earliest organ music was also conceived under the influence of J.S. Bach; in the Three Preludes and Fugues, op. 37, we hear Mendelssohn capably assimilating Bach’s forms into an early-Romantic language, but one still formed by Classical ideals. In the Six Sonatas, op. 65 written only seven years later (1844), Mendelssohn takes a decisive step into the Romantic age, for the first time appropriating the Viennese sonata-allegro form of Mozart and Beetho- ven to the organ. The first movement ofSonata III is a triumphant march, but in the middle, fugal section the chorale “Aus tiefer Noth” (Psalm 130, “Out of the depths”) is introduced as a dark, programmatic element, which is vanquished by the return of the march in the closing section. Charles Wood was a native of Armagh, Ireland, and studied with his famous countryman Charles Villiers Stanford. One of the inaugural class of fifty at the Royal College of Music, Wood later succeeded his teacher as Professor at the University of Cambridge. His works show the typical English skill for choral writing, with a Classical, elegant sense of form, harmony and line. “O, Thou sweetest Source” is a skillful setting of the 16th-century Genevan Psalm 42 melody, with rather more harmonic warmth than the later (and sparer) settings of such melodies by Wood’s students Vaughan Williams and Holst. –JO
