SUBJECT: Exclusive Negotiating Agreement with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the Facility Located at 101 S. La Brea Ave., Inglewood, CA, 90301
RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the Mayor and Council Members enter into an Exclusive Negotiating Agreement with the Los Angeles Philharmonic to negotiate the sale of the property located at 101 -105 S. La Brea Avenue, formerly known as the AMAN Inc. Building.
BACKGROUND:
On December 13, 2016, the City purchased the property (formerly known as the AMAN, Inc. building) located at 101 through 105 S. La Brea Ave, Inglewood, CA 90301 for $4.1 million. The purpose of the purchase was for economic development of the Civic Center. The City recently received a proposal from the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association to purchase the former Aman Inc. building and relocate their youth orchestra program (YOLA) to the City of Inglewood.
.
DISCUSSION:
The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association was founded in 1919 by millionaire and amateur musician, William Andrews Clark, Jr. He established the first permanent symphony orchestra. In 1922, the LA Philharmonic considered the Hollywood Bowl as their first official summer home debut. The Hollywood Bowl is one of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world (with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000) that hosted some of the finest artists from all genres of music.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic has developed an educational program for youth, known as YOLA. The LA Philharmonic along with their community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training and leadership training to underserved communities. Some of the participating communities include; the Rampart District serving over 250 students from ages 6 through 16; South Los Angeles serves over 325 students ages from 6 through 18 years old; and Downtown Los Angeles serves approximately 140 students from ages 8 through 12 years old. Since the beginning, the Los Angeles Philharmonic has consistently been known as home to Southern California’s leading artists
Once negotiations are finalized, staff will submit a Purchase and Sale Agreement for City Council consideration with the agreed upon terms and conditions included.
