A mere 15 minutes from the French border and the European Union (EU), our cellphones were inoperative in non-EU Switzerland, leaving us without the modern convenience of Google maps. Flying blind through the city, we relied on Kate’s memory of studying maps before we left home and well-marked signage to find our way to the United Nations (UN) and then on to our hotel.

16 Visit SuncoastPCA.org for news, events and updates! After parking the car and dropping our bags in the hotel room, we set out to see Geneva. We first hopped a local street car and headed west out of town to CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. CERN is home to the world’s largest particle accelerator (a 27km-long ring underground on the Franco-Swiss border on the edge of Geneva). To quote its website, the organization studies “the fundamental structure of the universe” and “the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter.” It’s quite heady stuff that even as an engineer, I find difficult to comprehend. CERN has a free museum and if you’re lucky like we were, you can tag along with a scientist explaining his work. We woke to steady rain on Saturday, so we started the morning by hiking quickly across the Rhône River at the bottom of Lake Geneva and visited the museum of watchmaker Patek Phillipe. After the tour, we headed for home, enjoying a nice drive back-tracking around Lake Geneva and through the countryside, then breaking off to take a more direct route back to Germany through Basel and up the west side of the Black Forest on the A5. The route to Basel took us over a mountain pass and through more tunnels before eventually crossing the Rhine River and into the city. Once over the border back in Germany, light traffic conditions permitted a brisk pace home. I opened up the throttle on the Boxster and we cruised along at 110 to 120 mph for long stretches, some for a solid half hour at a time before we reached the turnoff to the A8 at Karlsruhe. A winter wonderland greeted us back home as the rain we saw in Geneva on Saturday fell as snow up in Stuttgart.
