Hospital/Department Orientation: 8:00AM Location: First Day – Report to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center Main Building located at 836 W. Wellington Avenue in Chicago. The Site Coordinator will email you the Reporting Instructions one week prior to the start of your rotation outlining the details of your mandatory orientation. Please note - contact the Site Coordinator for a new orientation date if your first day falls on a legal holiday.

The Anesthesiology Pain Management clerkship is a 4 week elective rotation, offered to the Affiliated and Non-Affiliated Medical Schools. There are only two (2) slots offered as a first come first serve basis. However, if there are availabilities, the student site coordinator will notify school coordinators.

• Students must be from an LCME or AOA accredited .

Rotation will be CANCELLED if forms and verifications are not received and complete by 12 Noon of the (FOUR) 4 week deadline date.

Rotation Description: The student will be exposed to a multi-disciplinary pain management and sees patients from hospital services in acute and environments. At the completion of this rotation, students should be able to perform a neurologic exam, lumbar epidural steroid injections, lumbar facet joint injections, and trigger point injections. Students should also be able to create a differential diagnosis for , and be able to read and evaluate radiographic studies to diagnose the source of back pain.

Rotation Objectives: • Responsibilities will include obtaining a medical history, a targeted neurological examination and evaluation of radiographic studies. • Reviewing the relevant clinical, neuro and orthopedic anatomy as it relates to the pain patient. • Evaluating patients on the acute pain service; new consults, and follow-up consults; visits and following up with patients with continuous epidural, and regional catheters. • The students will assist in performing interventional pain procedures in the pain center and the operating room. • A lecture to the pain service on a topic of the trainee’s choice will be required during this rotation.

Mandatory Assignment: • Each Medical Student is required to submit a 5 to 10 minute PowerPoint presentation on a -related topic. Presentation should be emailed to Site Coordinator. This is a requirement for the completion of the rotation. The student needs to confer with Dr. Villa regarding a suitable topic to present. After the student has prepared their PowerPoint presentation, they must contact Dr. Antony Tharian at Ext. 61-3595, or via Email at [email protected] to schedule a time to deliver their presentation during one of the morning conference sessions.

2/2020 Anesthesiology Pain Management Reporting Instructions Daily Reporting Instructions: • Educational activities in the Anesthesiology Department begin at 6AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays; 6:30AM on Tuesdays, unless otherwise noted. They take place in Conference Room G34, Center for Education Building (836 West Nelson Street). Tuesday’s location will be either G34 or the Olson auditorium; the Educational Lecture Conference Schedule will delineate the locations.

Things to know • Students must bring and wear their school id badge with picture (we will provide a Medical Student Access Badge also to wear) This MUST be worn above the waist and visible

• Mandatory – the following videos, MUST be viewed four (4) weeks prior to rotation start date. Students not complying with this protocol will not be allowed to start their rotation. o View the CareConnection computer based training videos (Web-Based Patient Access Database) and o View the Universal Protocol “Time out Video” • You will receive an Educational Lecture Conference Schedule. • All students are required to attend daily Educational Lecture Conference Presentations. • Please Note - If you require any time off during your rotation, you MUST contact the department coordinator Ms. Gladys Vera at [email protected] at least four weeks PRIOR to the start of your rotation. • Scheduled absences must be approved by Site Preceptor • Any unplanned absences must be reported to Gladys Vera, Site Coordinator 773-296-5616 • Students do not take night call.

All text loaned and not returned to the Anesthesiology Department will result in a fine to cover cost of materials. In addition, this will cause student’s evaluation to be placed on hold.

On final day of rotation: The Student Clearance Form is to be completed and returned to the Site Student Coordinator along with Medical Student Access Badge, Radiation Badge, Textbook and Parking Permit Hang Tag (if applicable).
