Last Match UTRGV Closes Out HBU Invitational With First Win of the Season Aug. 26, 2018 at Sorrels Field – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s soccer team closed out the Houston Baptist Invitational with a 4-1 win over Siena College on Sunday at Sorrels Field for its first win of the season. UTRGV (1-1-0) fell behind early in the match as Siena’s (0-1-1) Diego Cruz put in a goal at 14:51 into the match but answered back with a pair of goals in the first half. Senior Jaakko Hietikko knotted up the match at 1-1 with a goal at 33:41, which was assisted by senior Isaiah Hinds. Less than two minutes later, Hietikko was involved in another play as he assisted freshman Damian Magallan Jr. in scoring a goal giving UTRGV the 2-1 lead at 35:26. UTRGV took the 2-1 lead into halftime as they outshot Siena 10-3 with three of those 10 shot going on goal. In the second half, UTRGV kept the offensive pressure on Siena with 13 shots, seven of which were on goal. Junior Kyle Edwards pushed UTRGV’s lead to 3-1 with his first goal of the season at 56:23. Magallan Jr. put the finishing touches with his second goal of the season as he took the pass from senior Isidro Martinez and put it between the legs of Siena’s goalie G. Monroe at 65:35 to make it 4-1. Andy Rios (1-1) faced seven shots in the match while making three saves.

Previous Matches UTRGV Falls to Saint Francis in Season Opener Aug. 24, 2018 at Sorrels Field – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s soccer team dropped its season opener 1-0 to Saint Francis University at Sorrels Field on Friday in the first match of the HBU Invitational. Saint Francis (1-0-0) took the lead 1-0 25:18 into the match as Mario Mastrangelo took the pass from Lucas Rosa in the box and snuck it by UTRGV goalie Andy Rios (0-1-0). UTRGV (0-1-0) had an opportunity late in the first half but junior Kyle Edward’s shot was saved by Alex Morgret (1-0-0) as Saint Francis took the 1-0 lead into halftime. UTRGV put pressure on Saint Francis in the second half but Morgret kept them off the board with a pair of saves. Rios kept the score at 1-0 as he finished the match with four saves.

UTRGV Defeats St. Edward’s in Final Friendly of the Preseason Aug. 20, 2018 at UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s soccer team picked up a 2-0 victory over St. Edward’s University on Monday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex in its final exhibition match of the preseason. UTRGV put the pressure on St. Edward’s early in the first half. Senior Isaiah Hinds put UTRGV on the scoreboard with a goal just 7:47 into the game. Hinds got the pass from junior Dimitris Strantzalis in front of the goal and one-touched it with the left foot into the goal. Later in the half, junior Angel Lopez made it 2-0 with a goal at 14:10 as he took the loose ball from midfield and got passed the goalie from the left side of the box. UTRGV made their shots count in the first half while freshman Trevor Schneider recorded two saves. In the second half, UTRGV didn’t let up as they put the match away. Kyle Edwards streaked up left side of the field and put a shot past the goalie with his left foot that made it 3-0 at the 78:23 mark. Edwards also had a hand in the final goal of the night as he set up junior Sergio Loredo Jr. with 83:49 on the clock. Loredo Jr. streaked up the left side of the field for the goal. Schneider finished the night with two saves as the UTRGV defense kept St. Edward’s away from the goal in the second half.
