Debora Magno ARCHIVIO STORICO MESSINESE Periodico fondato nel Millenovecento SOCIETÀ MESSINESE DI STORIA PATRIA ARCHIVIO STORICO MESSINESE - 84/85 - MESSINA 2003/2004 Pubblicazione realizzata con il contributo della Regione Siciliana - Assessorato BB.CC.AA. e Pubblica Istruzione ATTILIO RUSSO COSTANTINO LASCARIS TRA FAMA E OBLIO NEL CINQUECENTO MESSINESE* Ciò che colpisce, riguardo alla figura di Costantino La- scaris, è il contrasto tra la fama che accompagnò in vita l’u- manista e l’oblio in cui cadde a qualche decennio dalla sua morte, a Messina, anche se soltanto per un determinato in- tervallo di tempo. Le amnesie sospette su Lascaris iniziano precocemente e già nel 1518, dopo neanche un ventennio dalla sua scomparsa, Francesco Iannelli, che nella città del- lo Stretto era stato tra gli allievi di Costantino, manifesta un clamoroso vuoto di memoria a proposito dell’ex maestro. Nel poemetto Sylva de naturae parentis tenore1, infatti, Ian- nelli esclude inspiegabilmente Lascaris (e Bessarione) dal nutrito elenco d’illustri umanisti dell’epoca presente nell’o- pera, scritta in Calabria e dedicata a Iacopo Sannazaro. L’as- senza dalla Sylva, comunque, potrebbe sembrare più un fat- to episodico o locale2, giacché, quasi contemporaneamente, * Contributo presentato dal Socio Rosario Moscheo. 1 Del manoscritto, segnalato per la prima volta da G. Nel 1520 lo Scobar, nella premessa al suo De rebus praeclaris Syracusanis, non di- mentica pertanto di citare l’antico «praeceptor», definendo- lo «sapientissimus» e «praestantissimus»3. Lo stesso Iannel- li, poi, rientrato a Messina dopo l’esperienza calabrese e di- ventato curatore, nel 1526, dell’edizione del De urbis Messa- nae pervetusta origine (opera postuma di Bernardo Rizzo, anch’egli ex allievo di Costantino), non tralascerà stavolta, nella postfazione al libro, di ricordare i tempi del discepola- to «sub Constantino illo Lascare, viro summe venerando»4. sinese feudataria del luogo. In seguito, Iannelli avrebbe fatto ritorno a Messina mettendosi al servizio di un’altra famiglia nobile peloritana: quella dei La Rocca (ibid., spec. pp. 316 e 347; G. LIPARI, Per una storia del- la cultura letteraria a Messina, in “Archivio storico messinese”, s. III, vol. XXXIII, 1982, pp. 65-187 spec. 113). 3 L.C. Aderam ego saepe, cum ea de re verba ipse faceret cum Constantino: quem dixi, sene venerando, qui et ipse vetustissima- rum historiarum studiosissimus et habitus est, et fuit» (B. RIZZO, De Urbis Messanae pervetusta origine, Messina 1526, f. 8r-v). Il manoscritto quat- trocentesco del libro del Rizzo era andato in eredità al figlio di questi, le cui due figlie avevano sposato i due fratelli Filippo e Cristoforo La Roc- ca, i quali ne commissionarono quindi la pubblicazione a Iannelli nel 1526 (cfr. C. BIANCA, Stampa, cultura società a Messina alla fine del Quat- trocento, Palermo 1988, II, pp. 341-356 spec. 345-346 nt. 2). Tali partico- lari sull’edizione dell’opera, relativi ai due La Rocca (insieme ad altri det- tagli su Francesco Cameni, autore della lettera prefatoria al testo), furo- no riferiti in seguito da Francesco Maurolico, con molta precisione, nei propri due libri aggiunti al De poetis latinis di Pietro Crinito (v. infra, nt. 8). Il Maurolico, aveva pure dedicato dei versi encomiastici al Rizzo ed a COSTANTINO LASCARIS TRA FAMA E OBLIO NEL CINQUECENTO MESSINESE 7 In tal modo, altre menzioni riguardanti Lascaris dovettero certo essere relativamente numerose in quegli anni, un po’ per tutta la Sicilia e la Penisola, dove il dotto bizantino ave- va operato lasciando un significativo retaggio5. Per quanto concerne l’ambito messinese, è dallo scien- ziato e storico Francesco Maurolico che si avranno, qualche tempo dopo, ulteriori notizie su Lascaris e la sua scuola in riva allo Stretto, contenute nel De piscibus siculis tractatus per epistolam (1543)6, nel Prologus de quantitate (1554)7 e nei due libri aggiunti dal matematico al proprio compendio del De poetis latinis di Pietro Crinito (1555)8. Ma già nella Filippo La Rocca, pubblicati nello stesso De origine (f. 9r), che possono considerarsi il primo scritto dello scienziato messinese dato alle stampe, tra quelli attualmente conosciuti. 5 Si ricordi ad esempio la menzione di Lucio Marineo Siculo, nel 1514, nella lettera a Cataldo Parisio (che si legge in G. Posteriore è la citazione di M. PANCLARENO in Vita Francisci Pharaoni con- tenuta nella prefazione di Francisci Pharaoni Institutiones grammaticae, Brescia 1537 (che ricorda laconicamente l’insegnamento di Lascaris a Messina, e può leggersi, insieme ad altre, anche in P. REINA, Delle notizie istoriche della città di Messina, II, Messina 1663, pp. 47-52; cfr. anche BIANCA, Stampa, cit., II, pp. 420-421). 6 Cfr. R. Il Maurolico scrive, implicitamente, della scuola mes- sinese (e dei discepoli) di Costantino trattando di Pietro Bembo e di Fran- cesco Faraone. Scrivendo di quest’ultimo egli è comunque piuttosto am- biguo, e definisce Costantino Lascaris, Bernardo Rizzo e Matteo Caldo “amici” del Faraone, mentre ne furono maestro il primo e condiscepoli gli altri due. La data del 1555, come anno di pubblicazione del compendio mauroliciano, fu riferita da L. PERRONI GRANDE, F. Maurolico, professore del- l’Università messinese e dantista, nel vol. collettivo R. Accademia Pelorita- 8 ATTILIO RUSSO sua prima lettera al Bembo, nel 15369, Maurolico aveva ri- cordato i tempi in cui il patrizio veneto aveva seguito nella città del Faro gli insegnamenti del maestro bizantino10, ri- petendo in seguito la medesima notizia, con un accenno nella Cosmographia, stampata nel 154311. Sempre intorno alla metà del secolo, poi, il Maurolico darà alle stampe un volume di poesie in cui dedicherà un interessante sonetto al Lascaris12, definito enfaticamente «alma divina… per la cui dottrina… qui Messina fioriva un tempo quasi un’altra Athene»13. Infine, egli inserirà in calce ad una propria opera pubblicata nel 1556, insieme ad alcuni apocrifi neotesta- mentari, un breve scritto d’autore sconosciuto in cui si menziona l’umanista quale traduttore, dal greco in latino, na dei Pericolanti, CCCL Anniversario dell’Università di Messina, pp. 41-61; di nuovo in R. MOSCHEO, Francesco Maurolico tra Rinascimento e scienza ga- lileiana.   • Galilei-1632 Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems
    Galileo di Vincenzo Bonaulti de Galilei ([ɡaliˈlɛːo ɡaliˈlɛi]; 15 February 1564 – 8 January 1642) was an Italian astronomer, physicist and engineer, sometimes described as a polymath, from Pisa. Galileo has been called the "father of observational astronomy", the "father of modern physics", the "father of the scientific method", and the "father of modern science". Galileo studied speed and velocity, gravity and free fall, the principle of relativity, inertia, projectile motion and also worked in applied science and technology, describing the properties of pendulums and "hydrostatic balances", inventing the thermoscope and various military compasses, and using the telescope for scientific observations of celestial objects. His contributions to observational astronomy include the telescopic confirmation of the phases of Venus, the observation of the four largest satellites of Jupiter, the observation of Saturn's rings, and the analysis of sunspots. Galileo's championing of heliocentrism and Copernicanism was controversial during his lifetime, when most subscribed to geocentric models such as the Tychonic system. He met with opposition from astronomers, who doubted heliocentrism because of the absence of an observed stellar parallax. The matter was investigated by the Roman Inquisition in 1615, which concluded that heliocentrism was "foolish and absurd in philosophy, and formally heretical since it explicitly contradicts in many places the sense of Holy Scripture". Galileo later defended his views in Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems (1632), which appeared to attack Pope Urban VIII and thus alienated him and the Jesuits, who had both supported Galileo up until this point. He was tried by the Inquisition, found "vehemently suspect of heresy", and forced to recant.

By speculatively reversing the order of landscape perception from land to water, the coastline becomes a flexible device capable of responding to unpredictable future events - natural disasters related to climate change (rising sea levels), or globally challenging socio-political phenomena (such as mass migration growing in scope, complexity and impact). The experimental design approach involves the design and representation of an incremental waterscape.     Introduction: World War I It’s been almost a century since the First World War star- ted, but its memory still resides in most people’s conscien- ce like very few other past events. The 1914-1918’s war was extraordinarily ferocious. It pro- duced and spread all over the world the horrors and an- xieties of the 20th century, involving millions of soldiers as well as citizens, leaving a terrible trail of death behind, using new and more devastating weapons, destroying the territory and creating enormous artistic emergencies. Be- sides the injustices, the frustrations, the seeds for new wars that the first conflict left as inheritance to Europe, it also gave birth to a grief-centered, bellicose, barbaric and full of hate culture. The Italian front of this huge conflict is usually remembered abroad thanks to the battle, and the resul- ting defeat, of Caporetto. History books narrate about the military strategies, statistics list the slain, the disabled and the widows. To Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto though, as well as to Austria and Slovenia, the memory is even more intense and upsetting. The war walked over these territories, it shred people and feelings and drained all natural resources. These are the territories where most of those terrifying battles took place. These are the territories where so many young people, coming both from the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, found death. Here, from May 1915 to October 1918, for twenty-nine endless months, the two armies fought harshly. The Julian and Carnic Alps, but above all the Karst, witnessed to twelve bloodthirsty battles.

    LETTER FROM THE EDITOR This year has been an interesting one for the undergraduate academic journal. I began this year as the only remaining member of last year’s journal staff due to the graduation of my colleagues. I have been a member of the Michigan State History Association since my sophomore year, and had the opportunity to be an editor of Volume 7 of the journal. Seeing the journal grow through the last three years has been a blessing. I believe that the interest it has garnered for both students and professors alike should be a point of pride for the Department of History. It is my pleasure to present Volume 8 of the Michigan State Journal of History. Volume 8 represents the continued restoration of the department’s academic journal, and by extension the tradition of recognizing excellent undergraduate scholarship at the university. It is our good fortune to have five exceptional works to help grow journal’s reputation in the academic community. The showcased research touches on a variety of subjects, with a coincidental focus mainly on Italian history. Without question, it is the creativity of these authors that has made serving on the editorial board an experience worthwhile. I offer my gratitude to the editors of this academic journal for their dedication to reviewing and evaluating the submissions that were presented to them. To Owen Carvill, Evan Newton, Micaela Procopio, Duncan Tarr, and Al Wang, I send my utmost thanks. We recorded a good range of birds with many Marsh, Hen and Montagu’s Harriers on passage. The spring migrants were arriving, with Swifts, Barn Swallows and House Martins abundant and good views of Northern and Black-eared Wheatears, Hoopoes and a magnificent pair of Woodchat Shrikes. We also saw Lanner Falcon and Black Kites well, but the avian highlight must surely be the sheer number of Lesser Kestrels around the fascinating town of Matera. The orchids were breath-taking in their numbers and diversity, especially in the extensive grounds of Parco delle Querce, and we also enjoyed a good range of other Mediterranean spring flowers, many localised to Puglia or with a peri-adriatic distribution, such as the maroon-flowered Figwort Scrophularia lucida and the blue spikes of the bellflower Asyneuma limonifolium at Capo d’Otranto. For most of the week we enjoyed bright sun, resulting in stunning views of a turquoise Adriatic Sea and distant views of Albania and Corfu, although there was a cold wind in the second half of the week.

Reaching across Italy’s geographic and multicultural barriers, the purpose of this state-issued textbook was to standardize Italian schooling and create a unified body of Fascist subjects. Yet, Fascist Italy’s new curricula proved anything but uniform, as the regime issued two distinct rural and urban editions of the Libro unico between 1929 and 1944 following Mussolini’s decree. Exploring tensions within the regime’s ideas on nationalism in a study that combines literary, theoretical, and historical analyses, my dissertation, Children’s Utopia / Fascist Utopia: Ideology and Reception of Textbooks under Italian Fascism, argues that the Libro unico served purposefully to stratify and not unify Italy’s student body at the primary school. Approaching my study of the regime’s education reforms, pedagogic manuals, and scholastic reading material through an Althusserian framework, my work diverges from the issues which current scholarship has tended to focus on (i.e. militarism, Aryanism, questione meridionale) and in this way offers a new perspective on Fascist cultural history.

Their collaborations were some of the most renowned films of the Neorealist movement and have influenced generations of directors. Zavattini was known as the most vocal proponent of neorealist cinema and through his advocacy for the movement he produced a significant body of theoretical and critical work. The wealth of his cinematic theories is is virtually unknown to American and English scholars and is often reduced to a single article translated into English; “Some Ideas on the Cinema.” Though the chosen article is one of his most important essays, and it is often published in film theory anthologies, it is unfortunate that the depth of Zavattini’s theories, and it has led some critics to interpret his approach to cinema as anti-literary. The present study seeks to evaluate the relationship of Zavattini’s and De Sica’s cinematic collaborations with literature.
