He is an exception in these times of methodological dogma and professed certainty not only because he approaches both his work and his empirical life with an uncommon curiosity and infectious openness but also because, more than most scholars, he works to keep his ideas and per- spectives perpetually in strategic flux. This fluidity of thinking and writing, which grows out of a sense of responsibility to the difficulty of his objects of study, is only matched by the rigor and intellectual integrity that also have come to be his trademark. Ian Balfour puts it well apropos of Corngold’s most recent book, Complex Pleasures: Forms of Feeling in German Litera- ture (), when he writes that ‘‘elegance and intelligence meet on virtually every page,’’ while the ‘‘prose is pellucid, flexible, and sinuous at the same time.’’1 From the perspective of the productive tensions that traverse all his writings, the idea of a Festschrift is almost an oxymoron—at least when one hears in this word not only the denotation of a worthy feast but also the echoes of festschreiben, to arrest something in writing for good. After all, one of the lessons of Corngold’s work is that there is very little that is fest- geschrieben once and for all, that does not deserve to be carefully reread and passionately rethought, again and again. This rereading and rethinking is propelled by an ethical impulse—the cura, which Heidegger tells us lies at the heart of all worry—that contents itself neither with the received wis- dom of conventional disciplinary perspectives nor with the false promise of closure offered by this or that system. : The essays gathered in this volume honor Stanley Corngold by focus- ing on the twin problems of literary friendship and literary paternity. It is appropriate that these twin themes should stand at the core of a volume in his honor, both because he has addressed them in his variegated criti- cal writings and because these tropes conspire to yield a perspective from which many of his more general intellectual concerns come metonymically into view. Corngold’s celebrated work on Franz Kafka, for instance, includes meditations, directly or indirectly, on questions of friendship and paternity, relation and offspring, proximity and distance. Moreover, honoring Corn- gold, who has always been both highly aware of, and vigilantly guarded vis-à-vis, the most recent developments in critical theory, with a volume on these twin themes is particularly timely in the current critical situation. Here, the problems of friendship and paternity occupy a central position in discussions of ethics, politics, art, and literature, as well as the relationship between the public and the private sphere. One could even say that with the numerous publications of books and essays on these topics, paternity and friendship have become privileged tropes in contemporary critical and historical debates.2 While friendship has been a central issue in the history of Western ethi- cal and political discourses in philosophy and literature—from Plato and Cicero via Montaigne, Bacon, and Kant all the way to Nietzsche, Freud, Sim- mel, Blanchot, and beyond—it has only recently begun to become visible as a sphere in which to consider the possibility of a subject that strives to act ethically and responsibly, even without recourse to an essential ground- edness or a stable metanarrative. The subject of friendship emerges in con- temporary theory, for example, in Jacques Derrida’s recent ThePoliticsof Friendship, as constantly confronted with an otherness, an alterity that tra- verses even the self. As such, it provides a prime territory in which to re- articulate such contested notions as community, democracy, and responsi- bility. Paternity, like friendship, has a long literary and philosophical history, from Plato’s Phaedrus—where it is discussed in its relation to writing— through Nietzsche and Kafka to the postmodernists. Concrete and meta- phoric paternity allows us to raise essential questions about the status of the ‘‘origin,’’ the ethics and politics of responsible production, the status of the ‘‘author,’’ the empirical versus the simulated or written personality, the discourse of disowning, constructions of the self through an other, the : concept of reproduction, the relation of failed (literary) paternity to the sublimations of destruction, and the ideological attempts to differentiate between proper offspring and bastard forms. Corngold himself has ener- getically contributed to these debates, both in the form of regular semi- nars at Princeton University, where students eagerly flock to his course on ‘‘Literary Paternity: Nietzsche, Kafka, Benjamin,’’ and in the form of essays addressed to a wider scholarly community, most recently in his work on ‘‘Nietzsche, Kafka, and Literary Paternity.’’3 In this regard, the essays that follow not only address but perform the topic of this volume: the texts writ- ten by Corngold’s friends and colleagues implicitly enact what is at stake in friendship, while the contributions by his former students, whether their explicit topic is friendship or paternity, are implicated in the structure of a certain literary paternity. For this purpose the published minutes and reports of the seven Congresses of the Comintern (1919-35) and the thirteen plenary sessions of its Executive Committee (1922-33) are of particular interest. The use of these minutes and reports is rendered difficult by the fact that a number of the participants did not act under their real name, respectively under the assumed one they made use of permanently, but under pseudo- nyms. The pseudonyms that were used over a long period cause hardly any problem (e.g., the pseudonym Karski, which was used by Julian Marchlewski already from the 1890's). These pseudonyms are generally known. Little is known, however, about those chosen ad hoc. Up to now no systematic attempt has been made to decipher them. The results of my research, summarized in the following list, show that such an attempt certainly is not hopeless. The list contains all the pseudo- nyms occurring in the minutes and reports that I have been able to identify. I have confined my study to the pseudonyms of persons who spoke or were elected on a commission; so I have not taken into account the pseudonyms that occur only on the lists of participants. In general, I have made use of the German version; for the 9th ECCI plenum the report in English was consulted, for the 1 lth, 12th and 13th plenary sessions the Russian version of the minutes was used.

    I Meilensteine in Thorvaldsens Künstlerbiografie 1 Jason und die Folgen Am 29. August 1796 bestieg Thorvaldsen in Kopenhagen die Fregatte Thetis, die ihn nach Malta brachte. Von dort reiste der Bildhauer nach Rom weiter, wo er sein Stipendium der Kopenhagener Kunstakademie antrat. Am 8. März 1797 erreichte er schließlich Rom und feierte dieses Datum fortan als seinen zweiten Geburtstag.1 Tags darauf schrieb Lorens Henrich Fisker, der Kapitän der Thetis, an seine Frau: „Thorvaldsen ist jetzt in Rom, Gott sei mit ihm! Er ist ein honetter Kerl, aber ein fauler Hund.“2 Die angebliche Bequemlich- keit des jungen Thorvaldsen sollte besonders in posthumen Biografien als Kontrast zur späteren Schaffenskraft betont und damit zu einem festen Bestandteil der Meistererzäh- lung seiner Künstlerbiografie gemacht werden.3 In Rom nahm sich der Archäologe Georg Zoëga seines jungen Landsmannes an. Während Fisker den Bildhauer als faul bezeichnet hatte, beklagte Zoëga dessen mangel- hafte Bildung. So betrachtete er Thorvaldsen zwar als äußerst begabten Künstler, jedoch sei er „höchst unwissend in allem, was ausserhalb der Kunst liegt“.4 Zoëga wunderte sich darüber, dass die Akademie ihre Stipendiaten „so roh“ nach Rom schicke, wo der Künstler „sehr viele Zeit verlieren muß, um Dinge zu lernen, ohne welche er seinen hiesigen Auf- enthalt nicht gehörig nützen kann, und welche er leichter und geschwinder vor der Reise hätte lernen können“.5 Weiter fragte er sich: 1 Thiele 1852 – 1856, Bd. 1, 33 – 46 (inkl. (Aristotle according to Dante)2 ABSTRACT: In the Penderecki oeuvre, symphonic music has been pivotal, with eight symphonies written over the span of forty years, including Symphony No. 6, which remains in the sketch stage. As he admits, the sequence of symphonies constitutes a sort of musical autobiography. In the life and work of Penderecki his interests in nature and culture have long run parallel, and in both spheres the moment of creation has been particularly signifi­ cant. Penderecki’s artistic work has clearly focused on two domains: composing music and moulding the nature which surrounds his Luslawice house - the space of the gar­ den and park. The latter type of art concerns nature not in its primeval form, but rather in the shape imposed on it by man. Over the last decade, the composer’s two passions have tended to drift closer to­ gether and intertwine. During this time, he has written his Eighth Symphony (‘Lieder der Vergänglichkeit’), devoted to trees, and Three Chinese Songs, permeated by his enchantment with the beauty of nature. In his Eighth Symphony, Penderecki employs poetic and musical images to show the beauty and diversity of the forms of the surrounding world of nature, in which it is given to man to live the successive phases of his life.

Gerhard Schulz (Seltene Texte aus der deutschen Romantik, 2), Bern, Lang, 1979,38 + vii + 362 pp., isa facsimile reprint of the 1807 edition, which was edited by 'Rostorf' (Novalis's brother, Karl von Hardenberg), and which contains poems by him, and by Friedrich Schlegel, 'Sylvester' (Georg Anton von Hardenberg), and Sophie Bernhardi, as well as the latter's tragedy Egidio und Isabella. Schulz gives a succinct account of the significance of this anthology for the Romantic movement.
