ABSTRACT Over four hundred books, articles, and resource materials on the topic of global education are identlaed in this resource manual. It is designed f:.r secondary school teachers to use in selecting reading and audiovisual resources to supplement courses with a global approach. Approximately 90% of the entries have been published since 1970. Material is arranged under four main headings called "world order values," which are seen to be the antitheses of major problems which bring stress, conflict, and human suffering to the world society. The four world order values are peace, economic equity, social justice, and ecological balance. Within each of the four content sections, entries are further characterized as books, articles, or resource materials. Most of the resource materials are films, which include information about length and color or black/white. Entries are listed alphabetically by author. Additional bibliographic information is given on title, publisher, and date. The guide concludes with additional lists of 40 related resource manuals and bibliographies; 67 periodicals which provide information on education for global interdependence; 102 agencies involved in concerns'of peace and justice; and publishers' addresses for entries in the main section. INTRODUCTICV

In the field of education it is important te remember that tfie 21st century is already here.Students now in secondary schools will be in the mainstream of life in the year 2000; thus their education is not a remote question for futurists or twenty first century planners --it is a question for right now. Will their education prepare them for a world that is past OT for the world that is coming?

If you have begun to use thlt manual, you are part of a new educational movement. Our hope is.that you will use it to hel0 today's student make the transition from living in the past to living in the future. In the past, we have often thought of the world as if it were a large green pool.table on whose surface is an array of scattered, self-con- tained billiard balls of various colors. If there is to be a future at all, however, the Planet Earth must be thought of as a whole system where all the parts are in dynamic relationship. This difference in thinking of the world's lands and peoples as a collection rather than a system has created the largest and most profound-"generation gap" in the history of mankind. You as a teacher have a unique opportun- ity to close the gapi

Tne material in this manual is arranged under rour main headings which we havr- come t7, think of as "world order values." We borrowed the guidelines from Betty Reardon, one of a trans-national community of scholars concerned with global social order. After much serious deliberation, they determined that world order values are in essence the antithesis of major problems which bring stress, conflict and human suffering to the world society. Thus, PEACE, the opposite of the great world problem of violence, becomes our first world order value. In the tame manner, ECONOMIC HQUITY, the antithesis of wide- spread and severe poverty, becomes a value.Racism, sexism, and other political Oppressions give rise to SOCIAL JUSTICE as a value; and the problems of pollution, resource depletion and overdevelopment lead to ECOLOGICAL BALANCE as a fourth world order value.

As educators we are committed to peace as both a goal and a process. We believe as did one of the great peace educators and activists of all time, Mahatma Gandhi, "There is no way to Peace.Peace is the way."

Ethel Jensen Chairwoman, Committee on Education 2. I. zugi

When we work 0W.ve the problems of violence, conflict, the nuclear arms race and war, tre actually working to establish thelSorld Order Value of Peace.
