Ha insegnato Storia medioevale, Storia delle Venezie e Storia della cultura e delle mentalità nel medioevo nelle Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia e di Magistero dell’Università di Padova Visiting scholar presso il Department of History dell’Università di Berkeley (1993). Nell’Ateneo di Padova è stato direttore del Dipartimento di Storia dal 1992 al 1998; presidente del Corso di laurea in Storia dal 1998 al 2001; coordinatore del Dottorato di ricerca in Storia del Cristianesimo (già Dottorato di storia della Chiesa medievale e dei movimenti ereticali) dal 1997 al 2003; direttore della Scuola di Dottorato in Scienze storiche dal 2004 al 2007. Responsabile nazionale e locale di vari PRIN (da ultimo PRIN 2009, Percezione e rappresentazione della Terrasanta e dell’Oriente mediterraneo nelle fonti agiografiche, cronachistiche, odeporiche, omiletiche e testamentarie di area italiana secoli XII-XV) Presiede il Comitato scientifico dell’Istituto superiore di Studi medievali “Cecco d’Ascoli” e la Giuria del Premio internazionale Ascoli Piceno. E’ inoltre direttore del Centro interuniversitario di studi Francescani (Università di Perugia, Padova, Verona, Milano-Cattolica, Milano-Statale, Roma Tre, Macerata, Chieti, Napoli “Federico II”),. É membro del Consiglio direttivo dell’Istituto storico italiano per il Medio Evo, del Consiglio direttivo della Società internazionale di Studi francescani, della Commissione ministeriale per l’edizione nazionale delle fonti francescane, del Consiglio direttivo della Fondazione mons. Michele Maccarrone per la Storia della Chiesa in Italia. Negli anni 1985 - 1989 e 1997 – 2000 è stato presidente della “Societas veneta di storia ecclesiastica”. Dirige la collana di “Atti dei Convegni internazionali dell’Istituto superiore di Studi medievali ‘Cecco d’Ascoli’” (Ed. Istituto storico italiano per il Medio Evo), e la collana di storia veneta “Carrubio” (Il Poligrafo, Padova). Cura con altri studiosi la collana “Italia sacra” dell’Istituto storico italiano per il Medio Evo. Fondatore e direttore con Giuseppina De Sandre Gasparini e Grado Giovanni Merlo del periodicoQuaderni di storia religiosa” dal 1994 al 2012; direttore della rivista “Le Venezie francescane” dal 1984 al 1989, è membro del Consiglio direttivo della “Rivista di storia della Chiesa in Italia” e del Comitato di redazione della rivista “Il Santo”. 2 Cittadino onorario di Monselice per meriti culturali, è socio di varie accademie e istituti scientifici, tra i quali L’Accademia galileiana di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti di Padova, l’Accademia Olimpica di Vicenza, l’Accademia dei Concordi di Rovigo, la Deputazione di storia patria per le Venezie, l’Istituto per la storia ecclesiastica padovana, il Centro studi antoniani di Padova.. 3 Attività di ricerca Si occupa di religione, società e istituzioni nel medioevo, con particolare riguardo al mondo cittadino. Dopo la pubblicazione della tesi, dedicata alla storia medievale del monastero di S. Giacomo di Monselice, ha proseguito le ricerche lungo il filone della storia monastica, occupandosi, per l’area veneta, di singoli monasteri (S. Giustina, S. Maria della Vangadizza, S. Giovanni Evangelista del Montericco, S. Maria della Riviera), di ordini monastici (Ordo Sancti Benedicti de Padua, Cistercensi, Certosini, Olivetani), di tradizioni eremitiche e santi monaci (Arnaldo da Limena, Giordano Forzatè, Beatrice d’Este), di monachesimo femminile. A contesti più generali rinviano i contributi sulla penitenza nelle regole monastiche dell’Occidente, su vescovi e monachesimo nel basso medioevo, su Certosini e mondo politico, sulle origini della congregazione di Monteoliveto. Parallelamente al filone monastico ha approfondito quello delle istituzioni ecclesiastiche locali di vertice e di base: vescovi, parrocchie, associazioni del clero. In questo ambito si segnalano il volume Clero e città del 1988 e il saggio su Congregazioni del clero cittadino e storia della parrocchia del 1995, nei quali per una singola città (Padova) e per un’area più vasta (l’Italia settentrionale), è stato affrontato un tema assai poco studiato e tuttavia importante come quello del clero secolare e del suo radicamento istituzionale, religioso, politico e sociale in ambito urbano dopo il Mille. Con impianto più sintetico si collegano a queste tematiche gli studi sul clero in cura d’anime tra universalità e particolarismi politici e sul ruolo delle chiese locali nelle lotte tra magnati e popolani nell’Italia comunale. In entrambi i filoni di ricerca ora ricordati la storia delle istituzioni e della spiritualità, delle strutture e della cultura tendono ad intrecciarsi, concorrendo a delineare, per lo più con riferimento ad ambiti territoriali ben definiti, una storia della società medioevale vista nella prospettiva della storia della Chiesa e della religione. A questa impostazione si ricollega anche l’attenzione per la problematica delle fonti, considerata non in senso strettamente tecnico, paleografico e diplomatistico, ma con riferimento alle possibilità concrete che esse offrono di rispondere alle domande dello storico nel campo della cultura, della mentalità religiosa, della società. Si vedano, a questo proposito gli studi sui testamenti o il saggio sul Liber contractuum dei frati Minori di Padova di Vicenza nel quale, come in altri lavori, compare un’ attenzione non occasionale anche per la storia economica. Su questi fondamenti poggiano pure le ricerche su penitenti e laici devoti, su Antonio di Padova, sul francescanesimo e sugli ordini mendicanti, che costituiscono il terzo filone attorno al quale si raccolgono gli studi condotti nell’arco di un quarantennio, riuniti nei volumi Dal Libro alla folla. 4 Antonio di Padova e il francescanesimo medievale del 2002 e Antonio di Padova Ordini mendicanti e società locali nell’Italia dei secoli XIII-XV del 2016.. Non lontano dai temi finora trattati si collocano infine le ricerche sulla pace e i movimenti di pace nel medioevo, sui rituali funebri, su Chiesa e potere nell’Italia del tardo medioevo. In quest’ultimo settore della ricerca si inserisce l’ampia monografia Gente d’arme e uomini di Chiesa del 2017, dedicata ai Carraresi tra Stato pontificio e Regno di Napoli tra XIV e XV secolo, nella quale è preso in esame il tentativo di alcuni esponenti della famiglia signorile di Padova, distrutta dai Veneziani, di dar vita nei primi decenni del Quattrocento ad un nuovo dominio carrarese fra Marche e Abruzzo, fondato sulla forza militare e sull’ ascesa a rilevanti cariche ecclesiastiche.     Introduction: Castles Between the 9th and 10th centuries, the new invasions that were threatening Europe, led the powerful feudal lords to build castles and fortresses on inaccessible heights, at the borders of their territories, along the main roads and ri- vers’ fords, or above narrow valleys or near bridges. The defense of property and of the rural populations from ma- rauding invaders, however, was not the only need during those times: the widespread banditry, the local guerrillas between towns and villages that were disputing territori- es and powers, and the general political crisis, that inve- sted the unguided Italian kingdom, have forced people to seek safety and security near the forts. Fortified villages, that could accommodate many families, were therefore built around castles. Those people were offered shelter in exchange of labor in the owner’s lands. Castles eventually were turned into fortified villages, with the lord’s residen- ce, the peasants homes and all the necessary to the community life. When the many threats gradually ceased, castles were built in less endangered places to bear witness to the authority of the local lords who wanted to brand the territory with their power, which was represented by the security offered by the fortress and garrisons. Over the centuries, the castles have combined several functions: territory’s fortress and garrison against invaders and internal uprisings ; warehouse to gather and protect the crops; the place where the feudal lord administered justice and where horsemen and troops lived. They were utilised, finally, as the lord’s and his family residence, apartments, which were gradually enriched, both to live with more ease, and to make a good impression with friends and distinguished guests who often stayed there.

    Cortenuova 1237 INTRODUCTION Cortenuova 1237 is based on the conflict between Guelphs and Ghibellines in XIII century Italy. The Ghi- bellines, led by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, are attempting to restore Imperial power south of the Alps while Guelphs, let by Pope Gregory IX, are opposing restoration of imperial power in the north and are trying to break Emperor’s allies in Italy. Both players attempt to capture cities and castles of Italy, Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica. The Ghibelline player starts with a powerful army in the north but must conduct many sieges, giving time to his opponents to organise a resistance. A smaller army is in the south but lacks proper leadership. Lack of communication between north and south is an issue for Imperial player. The Guelph player starts with his armies spread out over Italy and must first concentrate his forces in order to slow down Emperor’s armies. After the Emperor has been stopped the central position of Guelph hol- dings allows for a number of possible avenues of advance. The game’s event cards allow full replay ability thanks to the numerous various situations that they create on the diplomatic, military, political or economical fields.     Catalogue of the Albert Hoxie Slide Collection Compiled by Kent Fielding Schull Summer 2001 Collection Owned by the Department of History, UCLA Introduction This catalogue is a guide to the contents of Albert Hoxie’s entire slide collection of over 160,000 slides of art and architecture from all periods and from around the world. It is ordered according to his method of organization. There are three major sections. Section I is organized according to Area, Painter, and Time Period, for example: if you wish to see if the collection contains the works of Titian, look under Italian Painters 16th Century. Section II consists of artists and artistic works other than paintings and is organized according to Place, Subject Type, and Time Period,1 therefore if you want the sculptural works of Michelangelo then look up under Italian Artists 16th Century. Section III consists of numerous slides taken of sites and architecture around the world. This section is organized according to country, town/city, and specific place.2 For example if you want to see if the collection holds slides of Christ’s Church College in Oxford, England; you would look under Central England, Oxford, Christ’s Church, etc.3 It is also possible to search the collection by using the binoculars icon in the Adobe Acrobat Reader (assuming you have the PDF form of this document).
