Chico») Leprosy is seen in the Book of Leviticus ─today’s first reading─ and in the entire Old Testament as a punishment from God; in other words, someone had sinned: yourself, your parents, or one of your ancestors. Lepers were excluded from society, and they were considered dangerous towards the sanctity of the people. The term leper has become the image of those who are separated from society, for lepers, indeed were outcasts. What this first reading does is prepare us to fully understand the compassionate and loving gesture of our Lord Jesus in today’s Gospel, who came to give us life, and to do away with all kinds of nonsense. As usual, the Lord does and says things which are contrary to popular belief. Our ancestors in the faith were mindful of the command: «Be holy as the Lord your God is holy» (Lev. 19:2). Anyone with physical imperfections was not considered holy. Jesus touches the leper. These people conveyed not so much an infirmity, but they were dirty in the eyes of others ─they did not infect society, they polluted it. That is how people thought in those days. What Jesus did was an act of bravery. The man in today’s Gospel approaches Jesus with trust; notice that he tells the Lord: “If you wish, you can make me clean.” He was sure that this was exactly what the Lord wanted for him, for he had probably already heard that Jesus had healed others. The leper was right: The will of Jesus was soothing, healing, friendly, and full of mercy and compassion, especially towards those who suffer. “I do will it. Be made clean” The Lord Jesus did not hesitate. Jesus did not only cure him; he also re-incorporated this poor man to society and to the temple religious services. That is why he asked him to go and present himself before the priests, so that these could offi- cially certify his illness, and admit him back.

    Modern Alternative Popes* Magnus Lundberg Uppsala University The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) is arguably the most important event in modern Catholicism, and a major act on the twentieth-century religious scene at large. On several points, the conciliar fathers made changes in how the Catholic Church perceived the modern world. The language in the decrees was different from earlier councils’, and the bishops opened up for ecumenism and interreligious dialogue, seeing at least “seeds of truth” in other religious traditions. The conciliar fathers also voted in favour of liberty of religion, as meaning something more than the right to practise Catholic faith. A very concrete effect of the Council was the introduction of the New Mass Order (Novus Ordo Missae) in 1969 that replaced the traditional Roman rite, decreed by Pius V in 1570. Apart from changes in content, under normal circumstances, the new mass should be read in the vernacular, not in Latin as before. Though many Catholics welcomed the reforms of Vatican II, many did not. In the period just after the end of the Council, large numbers of priests and nuns were laicized, few new priest candidates entered the seminaries, and many laypeople did not recognize the church and the liturgy, which they had grown up with. In the post- conciliar era, there developed several traditionalist groups that criticized the reforms and in particular the introduction of the Novus Ordo. Their criticism could be more or less radical, and more or less activist. Many stayed in their parishes and attended mass there, but remained faithful to traditional forms of devotions and paid much attention to modern Marian apparitions.

Při tom pak chtěl Pán poučiti nás, kterak s modlitbou stálou, o níž mluvilv podobenství předchozím, máme spojovati také pokoru, poněvadž „modlitba kořícího se oblaky proniká, dokudž nepřiblíží se (až k Bohu); nepotěší se, aniž odstoupí, dokudž nepopatří Nejvyšší.“ Sirach 35, 21. Uvažme podobenství dnešní. „Dva muži vstoupili do chrámu, aby se modlili;jeden fariseus a druhý publikán.“ Luk. 18, -10. Ješto Jerusalém ležel na výšině, a chrám rozprostíral se na hoře Morii, proto pravil Pán Ježíš: „Dvamužové vstou­ pili do chrámu.“—Proč vstoupilido chrámu? Inu, pročse chodí do chrámu?
