SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ─B─ Fr. Fernando Rubio-Boitel («Fr. Chico»)

Leprosy is seen in the Book of Leviticus ─today’s first reading─ and in the entire Old Testament as a punishment from God; in other words, someone had sinned: yourself, your parents, or one of your ancestors. Lepers were excluded from society, and they were considered dangerous towards the sanctity of the people. The term leper has become the image of those who are separated from society, for lepers, indeed were outcasts. What this first reading does is prepare us to fully understand the compassionate and loving gesture of our Lord Jesus in today’s Gospel, who came to give us life, and to do away with all kinds of nonsense. As usual, the Lord does and says things which are contrary to popular belief. Our ancestors in the faith were mindful of the command: «Be holy as the Lord your God is holy» (Lev. 19:2). Anyone with physical imperfections was not considered holy. Jesus touches the leper. These people conveyed not so much an infirmity, but they were dirty in the eyes of others ─they did not infect society, they polluted it. That is how people thought in those days. What Jesus did was an act of bravery. The man in today’s Gospel approaches Jesus with trust; notice that he tells the Lord: “If you wish, you can make me clean.” He was sure that this was exactly what the Lord wanted for him, for he had probably already heard that Jesus had healed others. The leper was right: The will of Jesus was soothing, healing, friendly, and full of mercy and compassion, especially towards those who suffer. “I do will it. Be made clean” The Lord Jesus did not hesitate. Jesus did not only cure him; he also re-incorporated this poor man to society and to the temple religious services. That is why he asked him to go and present himself before the priests, so that these could offi- cially certify his illness, and admit him back. Jesus restores this man to full dignity, the dignity of a human being, the dignity of God’s creation. Most likely, we don’t know any lepers personally. However, the concept is still in our midst, and the challenge that Jesus offers us must be taken very seriously. Perhaps the key concept here is to treat everyone lovingly, no matter what others may think, say or do. In the old days, this was called “human respect”, which means that we are not completely free because we are worried about what those around us might think or say. We are called to love; our vocation is a vocation towards love and compassion. This joy, this salvation is for everyone ─we don’t own it, we owe it to God who is merciful and compassionate. Finally, we are the instruments, we are the carriers of what Jesus prescribes; there is no one else but you and I. It is a tre- mendous responsibility but not a burden. It is an honor and a privilege.

La lepra se considera en el libro del Levítico –primera lectura de hoy- y en todo el Antiguo Testamento como un castigo de Dios; en otras palabras, alguien pecó: puede que sea usted mismo, sus padres, o alguno de sus antepasados. A los leprosos se les excluía de la sociedad y se consideraban peligrosos en cuanto a la santidad del pueblo. El término leproso se ha convertido en la imagen para aquellos que están separados de la sociedad porque, en verdad, se les consideraba paria. Lo que hace la primera lectura es pre- pararnos para que podamos comprender la compasión y el gesto de amor de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, en el Evangelio. El Señor vino para darnos vida y terminar con las tonterías del pueblo una vez por siempre. Como era de costumbre, el Señor hacía y decía cosas que iban en contra de las creencias populares. Nuestros ancestros en la fe estaban conscientes del mandamiento: «Sean santos al igual que su Señor Dios lo es» (Lev. 19:2). A cualquier persona con un impedimento físico no se le consideraba santa. Jesús toca al leproso. No era solamente que ellos tuvieran una enfermedad sino que se les consideraba sucios en los ojos de los demás –no es que infectaran a la sociedad sino que más bien la ensuciaba. Así pensaba la gente en aquel entonces; lo que hizo Jesús fue un acto de valentía. El leproso en el Evangelio de hoy se acerca a Jesús con confianza; fijémonos que le dijo al Se- ñor: «Si tú quieres me puedes sanar». Él estaba seguro de que eso era exactamente lo que el Señor quería para él, pues probable- mente había escuchado que Jesús sanaba a los demás. El leproso tenía razón: la voluntad del Señor era calmante, curativa, amistosa y llena de misericordia y compasión, sobre todo hacia los que sufrían. «Sí lo quiero. Queda limpio». El Señor no vaciló. Jesús lo curó y de esta manera reincorporó a este pobre hombre a la sociedad al igual que a los oficios religiosos del templo. Es por ello que Jesús le dijo que fuera a presentarse ante los sacerdotes para que ellos certificaran oficialmente su enfermedad, y así admitirlo de nuevo. Jesús devuelve a este hombre la dignidad de un ser humano, la dignidad de la creación de Dios. Lo más probable es que nosotros no conozcamos a ningún leproso personalmente. Sin embargo, el concepto todavía existe entre nosotros, así que el reto que nos presenta Jesús debe ser tomado muy seriamente. Quizás el concepto clave es tratar a los de- más con amor, sin importarnos lo que digan o piensen los demás. En la antigüedad se usaba el término «respeto humano», lo que significa que no somos completamente libres porque estamos preocupados por lo que piensen o digan otras personas a nuestro alre- dedor. Somos llamados a amar; nuestra vocación es un llamado hacia el amor y la compasión. La alegría que esto trae es porque la salvación es para todos –nosotros no somos los dueños de ella y se la debemos a Dios que es misericordioso y compasivo. Finalmente, nosotros somos los instrumentos, los portadores de lo que Jesús prescribe; no hay más nadie sino tú y yo. Es una tremenda responsabilidad pero no una carga. Es un honor y privilegio.
