Online Appendix for Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue (2014) Some Principles of the Use of Macro-Areas Language Dynamics & Change Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue The following document lists the languages of the world and their as- signment to the macro-areas described in the main body of the paper as well as the WALS macro-area for languages featured in the WALS 2005 edi- tion. 7160 languages are included, which represent all languages for which we had coordinates available1. Every language is given with its ISO-639-3 code (if it has one) for proper identification. The mapping between WALS languages and ISO-codes was done by using the mapping downloadable from the 2011 online WALS edition2 (because a number of errors in the mapping were corrected for the 2011 edition). 38 WALS languages are not given an ISO-code in the 2011 mapping, 36 of these have been assigned their appropri- ate iso-code based on the sources the WALS lists for the respective language. This was not possible for Tasmanian (WALS-code: tsm) because the WALS mixes data from very different Tasmanian languages and for Kualan (WALS- code: kua) because no source is given. 17 WALS-languages were assigned ISO-codes which have subsequently been retired { these have been assigned their appropriate updated ISO-code. In many cases, a WALS-language is mapped to several ISO-codes. As this has no bearing for the assignment to macro-areas, multiple mappings have been retained. 1There are another couple of hundred languages which are attested but for which our database currently lacks coordinates. -

2 Culture and Culture Change CHAPTER SUMMARY The second chapter introduces us to culture. What is culture exactly? For most sociologists, culture refers to the knowledge, traditions, values, practices, and beliefs held by members of an organization, community, or society. As Eric Weissman describes, culture is a social force that impacts our daily lives and the choices we make. It can be both material and immaterial and produces “webs of significance” that influence both individual identity and entire societies. One distinction that you should take away from this chapter is that of culture versus structure. Structural elements of society are comprised of the enduring patterns of social relations and social institutions, whereas cultural elements are those that carry meanings. We interpret these meanings and attach them to certain values, ideas, and beliefs. In terms of time and space, culture can cover a vast area of meaning. It can refer to one’s entire social reality, or a particular social or geographical location. Even within Canada, when one thinks of Canadian culture, a few images immediately come to mind—the maple leaf and the game of hockey, for example. Yet within this one nationally unified culture, there exists several different cultures. These can be divided up by province, ethnicity, age, and so on. In terms of time and space, the other important distinction you must remember when looking at culture is that the culture of any people or place rarely stays the same over time. Culture is a fluid object and is always changing. Culture also influences the values and norms of a society. -

Lean In modern technological societies we take the existence of numbers and the act of counting for granted: they occur in most everyday activities. They are regarded as being sufficiently important to warrant their occupying a substantial part of the primary school curriculum. Most of us, however, would find it difficult to answer with any authority several basic questions about number and counting. For example, how and when did numbers arise in human cultures: are they relatively recent inventions or are they an ancient feature of language? Is counting an important part of all cultures or only of some? Do all cultures count in essentially the same ways? In English, for example, we use what is known as a base 10 counting system and this is true of other European languages. Indeed our view of counting and number tends to be very much a Eurocentric one and yet the large majority the languages spoken in the world - about 4500 - are not European in nature but are the languages of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific, Africa, and the Americas. If we take these into account we obtain a quite different picture of counting systems from that of the Eurocentric view. This study, which attempts to answer these questions, is the culmination of more than twenty years on the counting systems of the indigenous and largely unwritten languages of the Pacific region and it involved extensive fieldwork as well as the consultation of published and rare unpublished sources. -

Such questions have been largely based on Enggano’s lexicon, which shows little trace of an Austronesian heritage. In this paper, I examine a wider range of evidence and show that Enggano is clearly an Austronesian language of the Malayo-Polynesian (MP) subgroup. This is achieved through the establishment of regular sound correspondences between Enggano and Proto‒Malayo-Polynesian reconstructions in both the bound morphology and lexicon. I conclude by examining the possible relations of Enggano within MP and show that there is no good evidence of innovations shared between Enggano and any other MP language or subgroup. In the absence of such shared innovations, Enggano should be considered one of several primary branches of MP. 1. Starting from the idea that the extinction of a language causes the loss of various forms of cultural heritage, especially the customary heritage and oral expressions of the speaking community. There are two main problems in this study, namely: (1) Identification of the regional language of indigenous Papuans in West Papua Province, and (2) Classification of regional languages of indigenous Papuans in West Papua Province. This study uses two approaches, namely (1) a theoretical approach and (2) a methodological approach. The theoretical approach is an exploration of the theory of language documentation, while the methodological approach is a descriptive approach with an explanative dimension. This study follows the procedures of (1) the data provision stage, (2) the data analysis stage, and (3) the data analysis presentation stage. The findings in this study illustrate that the languages in West Papua Province can be grouped into four language groups, namely (1) Austronesian phylum groups; (2) West Papua phylum group; (3) Papuan Bird Head phylum group; and (4) the Trans West Papua Phylum Group. -

Often referred to as Bantu, for example in the term ‘Ekoid Bantu’, their classificatory position remains uncertain. Their noun morphology is not that of classic Bantu, although their prefixes are often ascribed its class numbers in a misleading way. -

DigitalResources Electronic Survey Report 2015-022 The Sociolinguistic Situation of the Galeya Language Group Philip Lambrecht, Alison Kassell, and Margaret Potter The Sociolinguistic Situation of the Galeya Language Group Philip Lambrecht, Alison Kassell, Margaret Potter SIL International® 2015 SIL Electronic Survey Report 2015-022, October 2015 © 2015 SIL International® All rights reserved 1 2 Abstract Between 13 February and 12 March 2004, the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) conducted a survey of the Galeya language, which is spoken on the east coast of Fergusson Island in Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. The goals of the survey were (1) to identify dialect boundaries within the language; (2) to investigate language vitality, particularly as indicated by language change and bilingualism; and (3) to determine the extent to which the Galeya people could potentially participate in the development of their language, based on levels of education in the area. The team conducted sociolinguistic interviews to assess vitality, used self-evaluation questionnaires to evaluate proficiency in Dobu and English, and elicited wordlists for lexicostatistical comparison. Four distinct dialects (Galeya, Basima, Ulua, and Gameta) were identified, but all four dialects can reportedly understand the central Basima dialect. The Galeya language appears to be vital, and there are educated individuals in the area who could potentially be involved in language development. A History of Metatypy in the Bel Languages
A HISTORY OF METATYPY IN THE BEL LANGUAGES Malcolm Ross The Australian National University 1. Introduction The title of this paper invites two definitions: of ‘metatypy’ and of ‘Bel languages’. Metatypy, as its etymology suggests, denotes a change in (morphosyntactic) type which occurs when speakers are bilingual and restructure the morphosyntactic constructions of one of their languages on the model of constructions from their other language (Ross 2006, 2007a). The Bel languages are a small eight-member group of Oceanic Austronesian languages. Figure 1 shows a Bel genealogy, based on shared phonological and morphological innovations which are very unlikely to have been transmitted by contact (Ross 2007b). One of the Bel languages is Takia, which I have described in various publications, principally Ross (1994) and Ross (2002). The Bel family is part of a larger Oceanic group, the Ngero-Vitiaz network, and the map in Figure 2 shows the locations both of the Bel languages and of other Ngero-Vitiaz languages referred to in this paper (Ross 1988:160-183). The case study of contact-induced change which is briefly described here has arisen out of one of the central concerns of my work, reconstructing the history of Austronesian and Papuan languages. In previous work I have compared Takia with its Karkar Island neighbour, Waskia, a member of the Madang subfamily of the Trans New Guinea family of Papuan languages,1 to show that much of the grammar of Takia can be explained as the outcome of metatypy on the model of a Madang language (Ross 1987, 1996, 2003, 2007a).
