A philosopher named Bela Hamvas in 1945 HUNGARY WHITE wrote what he described as "a prayer book SOMLO for the atheists" entitled The Philosophy of 3317 SZOLO SZOLO KFT - JUHFARK 2013 56 Wine. In its 111 pages, he makes the claim 3315 SOMLOI APATSAGI PINCE - HARSLEVELU 2012 70 that wine contains the very essence of 3311 KOLONICS WINERY - FURMINT 2015 76 spirituality, one that can actually be 3307 FEKETE CELLAR - HARSLEVELU 2008 80 consumed. Hamvas had a special place in his 3309 FEKETE CELLAR - JUHFARK 2011 80 heart for the "mountain wines" of Somló: 3303 SOMLOI VANDOR CELLAR - OLASZRIELING 2015 80 "[…] For me Somlói is not only a solar - 3305 TOTH CELLAR - JUHFARK 2015 95 tone, but also a symphonic, blond, 3301 SOMLOI VANDOR CELLAR - JUHFARK 2015 105 masculine wine, which, among our wines, contains, in a uniquely concentrated purity, LUXEMBOURG the oil of the highest creative spirituality. 3211 DOMAINE DE VINMOSELLES - RIVANER 2011 42 Therefore I think that, although all wines 3212 REMERSCHEN – AUXERROIS 2011 50 require company and reveal their true nature when drunk in a community, Somlói SLOVENIA is the drink of the solitary. It is so filled with 3235 QUERCUS – PINOT BIANCO 2014 32 the oil of the Creation's intoxication that we SWISSE may drink it only in a sufficiently immersed, definitely silenced, and balanced solitude. 3240 DOMAINE DU DALEY, VILLETTE GRAND CRU – 2011 75 […]. It is the wine of wise people, of those who finally have acquired the greatest knowledge - serenity... In the hieratic mask of Somlói I felt myself the closest to the ripe serenity and wisdom, to the intensive creative intoxication that brought this world HUNGARY - The tiny hill of Somló is one of the world's most unique wine’s regions and it belongs to an into being." exclusive group of locations around the globe that are wholly volcanic. The hill of Somló takes about 20 minutes to circumnavigate in a car, even with the zigzags… Juhfark means "sheep's tail” - so named because of the shape of its clusters – and it comes only from Somló. Despite its small size, the hill is farmed by a staggering 1204 individual wine producers. Of those 1204 farmers, only 42 of them are registered to sell bottled wine with a label on it. A few dozen make enough for the wines to be sold elsewhere in the country, and the number of those producers whose wines make it out of Hungary can be counted on two hands with fingers to spare. By 1511 the hill's vineyards were owned by the Somlóvásárhely nunnery, and governed strictly by the mother superior. Her published regulations for Somló included a strict codes for behavior: swearing was forbidden in the vineyards, as was malicious gossip, and, of course, any source of public indecency, especially drunkenness. Starting in September as approached, only old ladies were allowed to guard the vineyards against theft, the combination of young women and ripe grapes being presumably too much for even the most upright citizen to resist.

These last two are giving Chateau TURKEY Musar some increasingly stiff competition. 3245 SEVILEN, ISABEY – SAUVIGNON BLANC 2014 44 Chateau Kefraya’s oaked Bordeaux blended 3248 KAYRA WINERY, ANATOLIA - NARINCE 2016 48 red is more than respectable and Ksara’s dry rosé goes perfectly with the fresh THAILAND vegetables and powerful flavours of 8137 MONSOON VALLEY WINES – CHENIN BLANC 2015 36 Lebanese mezze. A prominent declaration of intent is Massaya, a serious red wine enterprise backed by top quality St-Émilion and Châteauneuf expertise, but other new or renewed ventures to watch include Chateaux Belle-Vue, Khoury, St Thomas and Domaines de Baal, des Tourelles and Wardy.

VIOGNIER 6147 LISMORE ESTATE, THE AGE OF GRACE – WESTERN CAPE 2017 60 Chenin Blanc in South Africa can offer floral, 6121 DEWALT HAYNES - TULBAGH 2014 60 citrusy and honey-kissed notes; apple, pear, apricot and tropical fruits; and nutty and toasty expressions when the wine has been fermented in oak barrels. Many of them have a formidable medium- to full-bodied roundness, often with zingy acidity to boot. Generally, South African Chenin Blancs are meant to be drunk young and fresh, but this is a that can also benefit from bottle aging. The fruit and acidity can make them nice apertifs and they can also stand up to heartier seafood, grilled chicken and a variety of Asian cuisines that bring the spice. Although the grape variety is not originally from South Africa, it is the most-planted grape variety in South Africa, and no other place on earth has more of it. Almost one of every five grapes grown in South Africa is Chenin Blanc.

The Lot 0729 MAS D’ALEZON, LES PRESBYTÈRE - GRENACHE 2012 52 rises in the hills of the Massif Central and winds slowly westwards through the AURY M southern French countryside before flowing 0735 LA COUME DE ROY, ALMA - GRENACHE 2013 42 into the Garonne, which then continues on 0744 LA COUME DE ROY, ALMA - CARIGNAN 2015 48 to Bordeaux. This navigable link with the port of Bordeaux was once of vital economic importance to Cahors’ . The Bordelais also benefited from the connection, not just because they imposed high taxes on the incoming wines, but also because they blended the dark, rich Cahors wines with their own, which in those times

often lacked color and depth. It wasn’t

without good reason that Malbec was introduced to the vineyards of Bordeaux in the 18th Century.

THE BAROLO COLLECTION….CIABOT BERTON THE VERTICAL When I finally made the decision about having an Italian Collection on the ‘1966’, my chosen name for the Wine List, it was quite challenging to then decide if to go for an Estate, for a Region or for a Grape 2008 - Intense, dark toned fruit, ripe but not Varietal. raisiny with a lovely earthiness, definitely As you probably know Italy possibly represents the most complicated wine territory with regards to all Chateaubriand is the one to pair with……165 the above, you can find chardonnay in the very northern Alto Adige and in the deep south of Sicily as well as the same Estate producing Pinot Grigio from Veneto and Nero di Troia in Puglia. 2010 - Fresh rose, green leaves and herbs There are many reasons to start and to keep a wine collection — convenience, investment, curiosity and with a hint of dried mushrooms to go with pleasure to name a few. And it doesn't take much more than a plan and a place to store bottles to get less complex dishes and Veal Loin sounds started. And I have both!!! perfect…………………………………………………125 The Oberto family can claim to have early origins reaching as far back as 1200. On a land register for La Morra there are references to the Germanic surname of Obertus. In more recent times other testimonies underline the close bond with the territory of La Morra, with specific references even to the cultivation of vines from 1800 onwards. By the end of the 1950’s, Luigi Oberto, along with his father Giovenale, was cultivating the 2 hectares of Nebbiolo on the hill of Bricco San Biagio, and selling the grapes at the Alba market. In these years Luigi decided to create his own winery and to produce wine, the first vintage being 1961. The limited yield amounted to a few thousand bottles: part of the wine from the best cask became a reserve, whereas a part of the production was sold unbottled to the major producers of the area. As the years went by, more land was given over to the growing of vines, until the present-day 12 hectares were reached. This land includes not only the valuable vine-growing slopes purchased over the years, but also the vineyards inherited by his wife Maria Beatrice in the historic Roggeri Cru. The winery now in use was built in the 1980s on the site which has always been known as Ciabot Berton. The small building (Ciabot, in Piedmont dialect) which stands here once belonged to a certain Berton, who had attempted to set up manufacturing fireworks here, and had burnt out the building and destroyed its roof. This old ruin, which gave its name to the business, can still be seen from the winery, and is surrounded by the Nebbiolo vineyard. From the 1990s, Luigi’s children Marco, an oenologist, and Paola, an agronomist, began working with him. Increasingly aware of the quality and full potential of the vineyards and their Nebbiolo grapes, they decided to vinify the grapes of the different vineyards separately, selecting the best batches of Barolo for bottling. In this way, by making a few important adjustments in production to add to Luigi’s great experience, the wines of Ciabot Berton have become steadily more widely known and appreciated. ROGGERI The Cru Roggeri, orientated south-east at an altitude of 300m above sea level, extends from the village of the same name (mentioned already in the land registry of La Morra in 1477) to the edge of the winery. The 4 hectares of Nebbiolo for Barolo cultivated here are divided into three sections, which include the oldest vineyards, planted about 40-50 years ago. The age of the vineyards, combined with a deep clayey soil, contribute to producing a grape rich in polyphenols, which confer the grand structure and noble character to the Barolo which takes its name from the Roggeri vines.

The meeting point of two knights, who had left respectively from Florence and Siena when the rooster sang at dawn, would mark the new borders of their territories. The Florentines selected a black rooster and kept it for a few days in a box with no food. On the day of the race, when they took the rooster out of the box, he sang much earlier than dawn. Thus the Florentine knight left before the Sienese rider, meeting him only him only 20 km from Siena walls. Since then the black rooster has been the symbol of Chianti.

IL CABERLOT ….A UNIQUE CLONE One of the world’s very rare wines, not only for the wine made from a particular variety—the Caberlot grape—or for the small amount of the production but also for the fact that it is bottled and labeled by hand, with artistic flair and only in magnums. This wine is the project of an extraordinary couple whose love story began in 1963 - Bettina Schnabel and her husband Wolf Rogosky. Bettina is the daughter of Ernst Schnabel, a German writer who wrote the first book about Anne Frank. In 1982 the couple met the agronomist Remigio Bordini, who had identified what he believes to be a natural crossing between Cabernet Franc and Merlot that was discovered in an abandoned vineyard near

Padua in the 1950s. What a perfect basis for a wine of unique character. The couple lavished tremendous attention and care on the vines, doing everything in their small vineyard by hand. They used no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. When harvest time came, the grapes were picked in several passes over as long as three weeks. They carefully selected only the individual berries that were ready to be picked. As Bettina explains, their philosophy was, and is, “What you would not put into your mouth will not go into the THE VERTICAL wine.”

The distinctive Il Caberlot labels feature a handpainted “X,” and they have a color palette of 10 different The wine is generally very appealing and colored papers, so each vintage also has its own color background. Lebanon’s latitudes on the eastern INDIA RED Mediterranean coast may seem too low for 8535 SOUL TREE - SHIRAZ 2013 42 high-quality wine production, but the Bekaa ISRAELI Valley on an inland plateau as high as England’s tallest mountains eases the 8560 ELLA VALLEY WINERY, EVERRED – CABERNET, MERLOT KOSHER 2016 72 temperatures considerably and can yield 8561 CLOS DE GAT – MOURVEDRE, SYRAH, CAB CHANSON ROUGE 2016 74 some very exciting red wines. Chateau 8562 TISHBI – CABERNET SAUVIGNON KOSHER 2017 95 Musar is the label best known outside the 8565 TISHBI – SHIRAZ KOSHER 2013 125 Lebanon and its bordeaux-like structure 8566 CARMEL WINERY, LIMITED EDITION - CAB, CAB, MERLOT VG KOSHER 2009 185 (filled out with much headier Cabernet 8563 TISHBI – MALBEC ESTATE KOSHER 2012 190 Sauvignon and Cinsaut fruit than the Médoc 8564 TISHBI – CABERNET FRANC ESTATE KOSHER 2012 190 is ever likely to produce) was inspired by a LEBANON visit to the Bartons of St-Julien. Whites tend 8556 DOMAINE DES TOURELLES, RED – SYRAH & CABERNET 2013 48 to flab (although Musar is working on his) 8558 DOMAINE DES TOURELLES, MARQUIS DE BEYS - SYRAH & CABERNET 2009 79 but some very respectable dry rosés are 8552 CHATEAU MUSAR, GASTON HOCHAR - CABERNET, CINSAULT 2006 105 also made by producers such as Kefraya and Ksara. These last two are giving Chateau THAILAND Musar some increasingly stiff competition. 8537 MONSOON VALLEY WINES – SHIRAZ 2014 36 Chateau Kefraya’s oaked Bordeaux blended red is more than respectable and Ksara’s dry rosé goes perfectly with the fresh vegetables and powerful flavours of Lebanese mezze.

AUSTRALIA RED …CONTINUE Worldwide, it’s estimated there are less SHIRAZ than 20 bottles left of the 1951 Penfolds 7590 TAHBLIK – VICTORIA 2012 52 Grange—the first vintage of what has 7501 SIDEWOOD – SOUTH AUSTRALIA ADELAIDE HILLS 2015 55 become Australia’s most celebrated wine. 7534 FOX GORDON, EIGHT UNCLES - SOUTH AUSTRALIA BAROSSA VALLEY 2015 72 On July 19, 2017, one of those remaining 7579 COBAW RIDGE – VICTORIA 2003 142 7571 DALWHINNIE RIDGE – VICTORIA 2013 150 bottles was sold to a private collector by 7511 BEN GLAETZER, AMON-RA - SOUTH AUSTRALIA BAROSSA 2005 295 MW Wine Auctions in Victoria, Australia, for 7529 PENFOLDS, GRANGE BIN 95 - SOUTH AUSTRALIA BAROSSA VALLEY 1997 730 roughly $40,900. 7527 PENFOLDS, BIN 707 - SOUTH AUSTRALIA BAROSSA VALLEY 2012 890 This was the very wine that had failed to 7551 HENSCHKE, HILL OF GRACES - SOUTH AUSTRALIA EDEN VALLEY 2010 1,270 impress the Penfolds Board of Directors— TEMPRANILLO the same board who finally instructed 7596 WILLUNGA 100 - SOUTH AUSTRALIA McLAREN VALE 2014 45 Schubert to stop making it. Christopher Rawson Penfolds, lived during

the 19th century.
