  • Tasting Notes By: Master Sommelier Max Cast Tasting
#6 TASTING NOTES BY: MASTER SOMMELIER MAX CAST Moderate intensity of aroma with ripe yellow pear, fresh Meyer lemon, quince zest, golden delicious apple, and notes of honey and button mushroom (possibly signs of botyrtis). The wine is dry, full-bodied, with an oily texture. There is phenolic bitterness as well. TASTING NOTES BY: F.L.X. TABLE’S MICHALIS KALAMPOUKAS Notes of ripe peach, lemon cream and apple. There is Chamomile-like floral quality, mushroom and wet wool notes with some possible botrytis from the notes of dried honey and ginger. Sweetness: Dry Tannin: Slight Phenolic Bitterness Alcohol: Medium Plus Acid: Medium Oak: old world or new? climate? grape? country? place? WINE DETAILS: Winery: Famille Hugel Cuvee: Classic “Hugel” Grape: Pinot Gris Country: France Regions: Alsace Vintage: 2017 Alcohol: 14.5% Elevage: No New Oak Other: Slow, temperature controlled fermentations NOTES : Alsatian Pinot Gris is very different from its Italian counterpart Pinot Grigio; it is even slightly more aromatic. This could be confused with Marsanne/Roussanne blend form the Rhône, but those have slightly more lifted aromatics and are often aged in oak. Once you have narrowed down moderate aromatics, medium plus body, oily texture, medium acid, there are very few places to go, except Alsatian Pinot Grigio. A great blind tasting example that what is not there also can lead the way to a conclusion. Retail Price: $25 Click Here to Reorder at F.L.X. • NV Champagnes Tasted in London: Jancis Robinson 09/07/19
NV champagnes tasted in London: Jancis Robinson 09/07/19 TASTING ARTICLES GROWERS' CHAMPAGNE Worshipping at the altar of non-vintage champagne... Tyson Stelzer is an Australian wine writer with a particular interest in screwcaps and champagne. It was the latter that lured him to a Hawksmoor church in London's Spitalfields recently to lay on the finest generic tasting of champagne the capital had seen for some time. To the outside observer it may seem strange that this event was organised from Australia and, apparently anyway, had nothing to do with the official generic champagne promotional body. Ours not to reason why. Taste Champagne was a great success for those of us who enjoy tasting champagne without too much of a crowd. I dare say Tyson might have wished for even more attendees at the trade tasting during the day and the public one in the evening. But it was a sufficient success for him and his team to be planning the next one already. Put 25 March 2020 in your diary... There were so many champagnes available to taste – 211 – that a strategy was needed. I decided to taste each exhibitor's standard non-vintage blend, which is after all the calling card of all producers and, according to the most accurate estimate I could get from champagne officials, represents 94.4% of all champagne produced. We may all fuss about the luxury-priced prestige cuvées, and I would like to point out that vintage champagne is probably the bargain category at the moment, but in reality, the champagne business is all about NV.

  • FIORANELLO ROSSO 2014 Category ROSSO LAZIO
FIORANELLO ROSSO 2014 Category ROSSO LAZIO IGT (Typical Geographical Indication) Blend Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc Climate The 2014 vintage’s growing season was a difficult one from a viticultural point of view. The frequent and abundant rainfall during the first months of the year, in addition to delaying the vineyard work which had been programmed, gave the vines ample reserves of groundwater in the soil. The vineyards, accordingly, went through a period of lengthy and vigorous growth and development during the spring, thanks as well to mild seasonal temperatures. The grapes, for this reason, were picked several weeks later than usual compared to previous vintage and were able to be harvested in a ripe and healthy state in late September only due to timely and careful systematic vineyard work and a dry month of August. Fermentation and Aging As in every vintage, the grapes were selected in the field during the harvest and then a second time on a sorting belt in the cellars which eliminated both unripe and unhealthy grapes not seen during the picking operations. The must fermented in the property’s conical cement fermenting tanks, and the fermentation took place in temperature-controlled conditions to best preserve aroma and flavor. The 12 to 18 month aging period took place in traditional 420 and 840 gallon (16 and 32 hectoliter) oak casks, and the wine was constantly monitored and regularly tasted to verify its evolution. It was then blended and completed the aging phase in stainless steel tanks until bottled. Alcohol 13° Historical data The Fioranello Rosso is produced at the Fattoria di Fiorano estate located in the Appia Antica Park just outside the city of Rome.

NOTES : Grenache is a thin skinned grape that oxidizes easily. So, we get see through red wines, with browning around the rim, usually red, but, blending grapes can cause this to appear purple. I expect these wines to be ripe, almost new world like, but, all red fruits (strawberries), and most notably, the amount of savory, spicy, peppery and grippy minerally notes ground this as a ripe style from the old world. Feel how the ripe lushness disappears and the grippy tannins start to tighten on the palate! Retail Price: $32.00 Click Here to Reorder at F.L.X.

  • Diverse International Pairings for Every Chablis Wines
Press release – Chablis Diverse International Pairings for Every Chablis Wine Just one grape from one region produces a spectacular range of wines, from Petit Chablis to Chablis Grand Cru, perfect for pairing with seasonal international dishes Ask any sommelier to list the most food-friendly wines, and he or she will invariably name Chablis. An expression of pure Chardonnay centered on the village of the same name, in northern Bourgogne, Chablis’ bright acidity, minerality, and balance all make these wines excellent matches for food. But even though Chablis is made from one grape in one region, its four appellations – Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru, and Chablis Grand Cru – create a wide range of wines, from fresh and easy-drinking to rich and complex. Use this array to take a palate journey around the world, pairing international dishes with Chablis wines and hitting the right note every time. A precise combination of factors comes together in Chablis to create some of the world’s most distinctive white wines. Nestled about 2 hours southeast of Paris, Chablis is located at the northern limit of still wine balance, the cool climate combining with the region’s characteristic clay-limestone soils to create the precise balance of acidity, minerality, and full flavor that these wines are known for. Within Chablis’ 13,400 acres, vineyards are classified into four appellations according to location, soil, and slope. In this special region, slight nuances make a remarkable difference in style, from the cooler vineyards of Petit Chablis AOC located mainly around the perimeter of the region and also above the Chablis Grand Cru hills, to the unparalleled exposure and rich, fossil-filled Kimmeridgian soils in the sloped vineyards on the hill above the Serein River known as Chablis Grand Cru AOC.
