Postmodern Narration in Umberto Eco's the Name of The
Shanlax International Journal of English 1 Umberto Eco, Italy‟s most celebrated philosopher, semiotician, literary critic, linguist and novelist, is widely acclaimed for many of his influential scholarly works. His novels The Name of the Rose, Foucault’s Pendulum, Baudolino, An Island of the Day Before, Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana, The Prague Cemetery have gained much adulation from his readers. His recent novel Numero Zero has also earned greater Dr. B. Kathiresan popularity. An exceptional narrative style imposed in these Associate Professor of English novels identifies them predominantly with postmodern Thiruvalluvar University literature. The Name of the Rose is a postmodern novel where Eco recites a fictious tale of Adso of Melk who inturn narrates S.Pushpanjali his past to the readers. Adso‟s story deals with William along Research Scholar, Thiruvalluvar University with his novice Adso, solving the mystery of seven bizarre deaths that occurs in the Benadictine Monastery where they come o n a mission to partake in a theological disputation. The postmodern narration in the novel harnesses temporal distortion and unreliable narration. Temporal distortion refers to a technique that the postmodern authors implement in their novels to convey the story. It includes employing features like fragmentation and non- linear narration. Fragmentation is the disarray of events whereas non-linear narration is the usage of distorted timeline in the portrayal of events. A novel, in general, usually incorporates a structure that assembles the compendium of information belonging to the story in an organized fashion. When this fabrication breaks, there is an interruption in the disposal of the events of the story, affecting the totality of meaning. -

Throughout decades of interdis- ciplinary writing, Eco seamlessly moved between academic work, semiotic analysis, acclaimed novels, and more informal cultural commentary, leaving indelible marks on each area. Eco once explained his approach as concerned “with the problems of language, communication, organization of the systems of signs that we use to describe the world and to tell it to one another,” acknowledging the relationship between his own work and the field of semiotics.2 A tracing of Eco’s theories inevitably recounts the history of cinema and reveals a mutual development. Within Eco’s large corpus of published works, however, it is possible to chart different as well as evolving evaluations of the aesthetic merit of both popular and high cultural artifacts. Because such evaluations belong to a corpus that spans from the 1950s to the present, they necessarily reflect the larger epistemological changes that ensued when the resistance to commercialized mass culture on the part of an elitist, aristocratic strand of modern art theory gave way to a postmodernist blurring of the divide between different types of discourses. Yet, it is also crucial to remem- ber that, from his earlier publications onwards, Eco has approached the cultural field as a vast domain of symbolic production where high- and lowbrow arts not only coexist, but also are both complementary and sometimes interchangeable. This holistic understanding of the cultural field explains Eco’s earlier praise of selected popular works amidst a pleth- ora of negative evaluations, as well as his later fictional practice of cita- tions and replays that shapes his work as best-selling novelist of The Name of the Rose (1980), followed by Foucault’s Pendulum (1988), The Island of the Day Before (1994), Baudolino (2000), and The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana (2004). -

Boston College From European Anti-Jesuitism to German Anti-Jewishness: A Tale of Two Texts “Jews and Jesuits will move heaven and hell against you.” --Kurt Lüdecke, in conversation with Adolf Hitleri A Presentation at the Conference “Honoring Stanislaw Musial” Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland (March 5, 2009) The current intense debate about the significance of “political religion” as a mode of analyzing fascism leads us to the core of the crisis in understanding the Holocaust.ii Saul Friedländer has written of an “historian‟s paralysis” that “arises from the simultaneity and the interaction of entirely heterogeneous phenomena: messianic fanaticism and bureaucratic structures, pathological impulses and administrative decrees, archaic attitudes within an advanced industrial society.”iii Despite the conflicting voices in the discussion of political religion, the debate does acknowledge two relevant facts: the obvious intermingling in Nazism of religious and secular phenomena; secondly, the underestimated role exercised by Munich Catholicism in the early life of the Nazi party.iv My essay is an effort to illumine one thread in this complex territory of political religion and Nazism and my title conveys its hypotheses. First, that the centuries long polemic against the Roman Catholic religious order the Jesuits, namely, its fabrication of the Jesuit image as cynical corrupter of Christianity and European culture, provided an important template for the Nazi imagining of Jewry after its emancipation.v This claim will be exhibited in a consideration of two historically influential texts: the Monita 1 secreta which demonized the Jesuits and the Protocols of the Sages of Zion which diabolized the Jews.vi In the light of this examination, I shall claim that an intermingled rhetoric of Jesuit and Jewish wills to power operated in the imagination of some within the Nazi leadership, the most important of whom was Adolf Hitler himself. -

Often, conspiracy theories work as counter–narratives con- trasting the reassuring oYcial accounts of such shocking happenings. Fictional literature is one of the main channels for the diVusion of con- spiracy theories. Starting from such premises, the essay focuses on a corpus of Italian novels written in the last sixty years. They refer to four of the most upsetting moments of Italian national history (Risorgimento, the fall of Fascism, the “lead years”, and the passage from the first to the second Republic). The analysis concentrates on novels by Umberto Eco, Andrea Camilleri, Leonardo Sciascia, Rino Cammilleri, Carlo Alianel- lo, and Luciano Bianciardi. It singles out diVerent types of conspiracy narratives in contemporary Italian literature, each one characterized by peculiar recurrent motifs and characters. 9-di martino_0Syrimis 12/19/12 2:36 PM Page 189 Between “n ew Realism ” and “w eak thought ”: umBeRto eco ’s “n egative Realism ” and the discouRse of late PostmodeRn Impegno loRedana di maRtino Summary: the recent theory of a return of realism has sparked a lively and somewhat heated debate among contemporary italian thinkers, gen - erating a split between the supporters of the philosophy of weak thought, and those who argue for an overcoming of postmodernism and the devel - opment of a new philosophy of realism. this article explores umberto eco’s contribution to this debate, focusing both on eco’s theory of “neg - ative realism” and on his latest historiographic metafiction. i argue that while eco’s recent theory further distances the author from the philoso - phy of weak thought, it does not call, as does maurizio ferraris’s philos - ophy of new realism, for an overcoming of postmodernism. instead, fol - lowing the outward shift that is typical of late postmodern impegno , eco’s later work creates a critical idiom that more clearly uses postmodernist self-awareness as a strategy to promote self-empowerment and social emancipation . this article explores umberto eco’s contribution to the current debate on the return of realism in order to shed light on the author’s position in the dis - pute between realisti— the supporters of the so-called philosophy of new realism —such as maurizio ferraris, and debolisti —the supporters of the postmodern philosophy of weak thought—such as gianni vattimo. my goal is to show that, while eco’s recent theory of “negative realism” further dis - tances the author from the philosophy of weak thought, it does not argue, as does ferraris’s philosophy of new realism, for an overcoming of postmod - ernism. -

Prodi 1986b: 122 Is it by law or by nature that the image of Mickey Mouse reminds us of a mouse? Eco 1999: 339 “When I discovered the research of Giorgio Prodi on biosemiotics I was the person to publish his book that maybe I was not in total agreement with, but I found it was absolutely important to speak about those things”, Umberto Eco said during our conversation in Milan in 2012. Indeed, two books by Prodi – Orizzonti della genetica (Prodi 1979; series Espresso Strumenti) and La storia naturale della logica (Prodi 1982; series Studi Bompiani: Il campo semiotico) – appeared in series edited by Eco. Giorgio Prodi was a biologist whom Eco highly valued, an expert and an encyclopedia for him in the fields of biology and medicine, a scholar whose work in biosemiotics Eco took very seriously. Goedsche's book, like Joly's, contains ideas incorporated in fabricating the Protocols . 1897–1899 Although the origin of the Protocols is still a matter of debate, it was most likely fabricated under the direction of Pyotr Rachovsky, chief of the foreign branch of the Russian secret police ( Okhrana ) in Paris. 1903 An abbreviated version of the Protocols is published in a St. Petersburg, Russia, newspaper, Znamya ( The Banner ). 1905 Russian mystic Sergei Nilus includes the Protocols as an appendix to his book, The Great in the Small: The Coming of the Anti-Christ and the Rule of Satan on Earth. -

Mundus Senescit: Umberto Eco recreates the Middle Ages Umberto Eco’s recent historical novel Baudolino opens with a sort of gibberish combination of Latin, German, Italian, and English, a gleeful combination of inside jokes, puns, and scholarly winks and nods. The tale, written on top of an earlier history that has been scratched off the parchment but occasionally peaks through, is a story in a story in a story on a story. If that sounds complicated—well, it is. Trickster Baudolino, an unreliable narrator by his own unreliable report, tells his long life story to Niketas, an historian whom Baudolino hopes will be able to give shape and meaning to an otherwise almost random series of events and decisions. From the very beginning, Eco is playing with myth, truth, history, and storytelling—and tackling a project far more lofty than Niketas’. With the recent publication of Baudolino, Umberto Eco returns to writing fiction set in the Middle Ages—and creates an ultimate symbol for medieval thought and history, in its own time and in our own. Eco’s concern for medieval philosophy, present in both his popular and scholarly works, is in fact a sort of nostalgia for a time now much maligned and misunderstood, a forgotten kingdom of intellect and imagination. Very much a realist, Eco never suggests we can— or should—return to a medieval mindset (Society for Creative Anachronism aside, no one who truly knows the Middle Ages could ever wish to live it over.) But in medieval thought he finds an elegant system, though one that was obsessed with its own eventual irrelevance and decay.
