Vegetation recovery on Dirk Hartog Island The big sand dunes on Dirk Hartog Island are shrinking! To be more precise, vegetation cover on the dunes is increasing and this is great news for wildlife. In 2009 the area of sand dunes on the southern third of Dirk Hartog was 2402 hectares. This dune area has decreased by 625 hectares to 1777 hectares in 2017. That’s an increase in vegetation cover of 30% on those dunes. Look closely at these images to see the difference in the size of the white dune areas in the two images.
The graph below shows the area covered by dunes on different parts of the island and how they have been changing over time. The northern dunes shrunk for the first time with an 11 hectare reduction between 2015 and 2017.

The Department of Parks and Wildlife has monitored changes to vegetation on Dirk Hartog Island since 2007. The vegetation monitoring program uses satellite images along with extensive ground validation to build a picture of how vegetation cover on the island is changing. Changes were first detected and analysed using hundreds of satellite images collected at near monthly intervals since 1988. Areas showing increased cover were then checked on the ground to determine whether areas of increased cover were native or weed species. Many were found to be native species. Many sheep and goats have been removed since 2007, eliminating the only large herbivores on the island. Sheep were declared eradicated in June 2016 and Return to 1616 is on track to declare eradication of goats in the second half of 2018. Removal of these animals and their grazing and browsing activities means recovery and protection of the vegetation and habitats needed by small to medium-sized native animals. Combined with the eradication of feral cats also expected in 2018, Dirk Hartog Island is looking good to begin translocating native animals late next year. Two hare-wallaby species will be the first translocations and they will come from Bernier and Dorre Islands Nature Reserve.
Banded hare-wallabies once ranged across southern Australia but now only occur naturally on Bernier and Dorre Islands Wild populations of the rufous hare wallaby remain Nature Reserve. Animals from Bernier Island were successfully only on Bernier and Dorre Islands Nature Reserve. reintroduced to Faure Island in 1998. They are territorial and They are solitary and live in low scrub and spinifex. form runs under dense shrubs and spinifex.
Although there is no evidence of these two hare-wallabies occupying Dirk Hartog Island in the past, it is like they did occur there and establishing them on the island will help ensure their survival. This project is funded by the Gorgon Barrow Island Net Conservation Benefits Fund.
Art exhibition - Celebrating the nature of Shark Bay Parks and Wildlife is teaming up with the Shark Bay Arts Council for another exciting project. This time it’s an art exhibition and we’re inviting the Shark Bay community to join in by exhibiting your art. The exhibition theme is Celebrating the nature of Shark Bay, which we all do in our own ways. It would be great to see what you love and celebrate about the nature of Shark Bay. Paint, sculpt or write about it and we’ll display it in the office in Denham and then in the display at Monkey Mia over the September/October school holidays. People will be asked to nominate their favourite artwork and the ‘People’s Choice’ accolade will be presented to the artist with the most nominations. Call 9948 2226 for more information.
