Vegetation recovery on Dirk Hartog Island The big sand dunes on Dirk Hartog Island are shrinking! To be more precise, vegetation cover on the dunes is increasing and this is great news for wildlife. In 2009 the area of sand dunes on the southern third of Dirk Hartog was 2402 hectares. This dune area has decreased by 625 hectares to 1777 hectares in 2017. That’s an increase in vegetation cover of 30% on those dunes. Look closely at these images to see the difference in the size of the white dune areas in the two images.

The graph below shows the area covered by dunes on different parts of the island and how they have been changing over time. The northern dunes shrunk for the first time with an 11 hectare reduction between 2015 and 2017.

The Department of Parks and Wildlife has monitored changes to vegetation on Dirk Hartog Island since 2007. The vegetation monitoring program uses satellite images along with extensive ground validation to build a picture of how vegetation cover on the island is changing. Changes were first detected and analysed using hundreds of satellite images collected at near monthly intervals since 1988. Areas showing increased cover were then checked on the ground to determine whether areas of increased cover were native or weed species. Many were found to be native species. Many sheep and goats have been removed since 2007, eliminating the only large herbivores on the island. Sheep were declared eradicated in June 2016 and Return to 1616 is on track to declare eradication of goats in the second half of 2018. Removal of these animals and their grazing and browsing activities means recovery and protection of the vegetation and habitats needed by small to medium-sized native animals. Combined with the eradication of feral cats also expected in 2018, Dirk Hartog Island is looking good to begin translocating native animals late next year. Two hare-wallaby species will be the first translocations and they will come from Bernier and Dorre Islands Nature Reserve.

Banded hare-wallabies once ranged across southern Australia but now only occur naturally on Bernier and Dorre Islands Wild populations of the rufous hare wallaby remain Nature Reserve. Animals from Bernier Island were successfully only on Bernier and Dorre Islands Nature Reserve. reintroduced to Faure Island in 1998. They are territorial and They are solitary and live in low scrub and spinifex. form runs under dense shrubs and spinifex.

Although there is no evidence of these two hare-wallabies occupying Dirk Hartog Island in the past, it is like they did occur there and establishing them on the island will help ensure their survival. This project is funded by the Gorgon Barrow Island Net Conservation Benefits Fund.

Art exhibition - Celebrating the nature of Shark Bay Parks and Wildlife is teaming up with the Shark Bay Arts Council for another exciting project. This time it’s an art exhibition and we’re inviting the Shark Bay community to join in by exhibiting your art. The exhibition theme is Celebrating the nature of Shark Bay, which we all do in our own ways. It would be great to see what you love and celebrate about the nature of Shark Bay. Paint, sculpt or write about it and we’ll display it in the office in Denham and then in the display at Monkey Mia over the September/October school holidays. People will be asked to nominate their favourite artwork and the ‘People’s Choice’ accolade will be presented to the artist with the most nominations. Call 9948 2226 for more information.

VMR Shark Bay received a phone call from WA Water Police on the 28th April about 0730 tasking us to investigate an epirb [emergency position indicating radio beacon] signal coming from an area at the northern end of Dirk Hartog Island.

Chris and I set off in Rescue 4 with an approximately 20knot SE wind behind us, the further north we travelled the rougher the sea became slowing us down from 26 knots down to around 12 knots.

We were able to make contact with the stricken vessel when we reached the position given to us and they radioed that they were moored in Turtle Bay, another 6 nautical miles further on. abated, finally arriving back home in Denham at 1430 some 6.5 hours after we set off. On arrival there we found they were in company of another vessel that wasn't big enough to tow them back The reason for the breakdown was given as dirty fuel to Denham in those conditions. We put a tow rope on that couldn't be flushed at sea as they had no more their vessel, got the three crew on board Rescue 4 filters available. and proceeded to tow them back with the other vessel sheltering behind in our wake for a smoother ride. There Like all VMR, St Johns Ambos, Firies and SES groups was a few hairy moments crossing the bar off the SE we are always in need of volunteers so if you wish to point of Turtle Bay with an ingoing tide running against a acquire new skills and have time on your hands please 1.5 metre sea but nothing we couldn't handle safely. do not hesitate to get in touch with the group of your choice. After a slow run south at 8-9 knots for a couple of hours we were slowly able to increase speed as the SE wind Thank you John Nelson

Thank you to our sponsors who kindly donated to the Raffle:

Also a big thanks to Jamie (the gardener) who went around selling tickets for us on the day.

Congratulations to all our winners and a big ‘thankyou’ to all those that bought a ticket.

Seniors Our Seniors group is ticking along and plenty of enthusiasm was shown at our General Meeting which was held on Wednesday 24th May 2017. A few activities are being planned with several members looking into the finer details before dates are set. After our successful Xmas bowling evening we are in the process of organising another trip to the Bowling club for the end of June. Other ideas done before are being looked at again as we know we are limited here by our distance. Soccer is not a traditional pastime in Shark Bay, but over the last two years huge improvements can be seen in results on the field and from this reporter’s perspective – the only way is up! From 10-2 and 9-5 losses in the club’s first two competitive games it was a much closer affair this time around. A narrow 3-1 loss at Geraldton Rovers on 29 April saw the boys from the Bay return with their heads held high, hopeful for a win next time around.

Shark Bay Inscription Post . Page 35 . June 2017 Community Notices Seth’s Fishing Report

Hi its Seth guys. Lately I have been able to do heaps of fishing because of the Fishing competition at the Fiesta. I saved up my $50 to enter and weighed in a fish every day. The heaviest fish I caught all week was a Spanish Mackeral and weighed 6.635kg. I was lucky as and I stayed on the boat. I borrowed Kaneo’s bait runner I got 2 days off school to go fishing with my Uncle Brett and cast out a plastics lure to try some different fishing as I was apart of the fishing team Yellow Canary which techniques. I had the lure still in the water for a bit while includes me, Uncle Brett, Kaneo, Spud and Tapper. I sat down, but we realised after awhile it was getting massive bites. I wound in the lure as the fish got off and We went fishing over at the Bar one of the windy days. it chomped the soft plastic in half. In general we had a Tapper got the first fish of the day, a Tailor at 48cm. He really good day but I clearly out fished the rest of the used a lure to catch it. I was fishing at one stage and Yellow Canary crew, representing Shark Bay fisherman. thought I caught a good Flat Head but it turned out to be Spud had a real bad days fishing. a Long Tom. When I measured it, I yelled out how big it was to the boys, 81cm and it turned around and bit me Another morning I joined the boys and we went to on the left side of my left kneecap. He went straight back Dampier Reef up the top near Turtle Bay. I caught the first in the water. fish, a Honeycomb Cod. We kept it and it was a decent sized Honeycomb they tell me. Then Tapper ended up I got Blackies to tell use about also. I went over to the hooking a Rankin Cod. He landed it and we bleed it and other side of the Bar. I dropped down my bait and I iced it straight away. Thats how you should do it. Spud thought something big like another Long Tom striked finally caught something a good Rankin also. Kaneo then at my bait but when I reeled in it turned out to be a caught a good Baldchin Groper which made me jealous. Mackeral. I dropped down again in my lucky spot and Tapper got yet another fish a Red Emperor and Uncle caught a decent Blackie. I bleed it straight away and put Brett was spewing as he missed a big Red Emperor. He it on ice in the esky then dropped my line once again in did though catch a little Red Emperor next. I caught my my lucky spot. I then hooked up to yet another Blackie. I first, a PB Red Emperor, not sized but 39cm that day. So also caught a baby Pink and when I reeled it in a massive close to keeping size as Red Emperor have to be 41cm Mulloway chased it up to the edge. I yelled out “oh my to keep. god that is the biggest Mulloway I have ever seen” and I looked over and Uncle Brett was charging down the Bar. He got over to where I was fishing and cast his line but the Mulloway had swam away.

About 5 minutes later I went over to stand near Uncle Brett, I asked him to help me hook my bait (a mullie) onto a single hook I had on my line (as I am not that good just yet). He taught me how, and laughed at me for only having one hook. I cast it out being silly and my line and rod started doing something strange. I realised I had something a bit different, and guess what it was a Tailor. When I finally saw it there was another chaser Tailor following it in. I got it close to the shore and Uncle Brett told me to run up the beach so the fish doesn’t fall off. We placed it on the Brag Mat and it measured 66cm, which gave our Yellow Canary boat points. We released the fish and guess what, I won the Tailor category at the comp with that fish.

After the Bar we drove off towards what we call Creek 14. We started on one side, and noticed a Flathead following my lure. It hooked itself, didn’t like it so it got off and swam away. I cast out again in another spot and hooked up to Then we moved into the reef at Turtle Bay. I was using a massive sized Yellowfin Bream. The Bream got off (I a hand line and caught myself an undersized Tuskfish. I was definetly getting all the good hits) but we went back saw something following our lines in and it was a Estuary to the boat and drove to the other side of the creek. Uncle Cod. I caught him next that cheeky fish. I got snagged with Brett, Tapper and Spud went off up the creek while Kaneo a fish on about 7 minutes later then another 10 minutes

Shark Bay Inscription Post . Page 36 . June 2017 Community Notices later with some help we finally got the fish off the snag. I P.S I also caught my first Pig fish at Dampier Reef with pulled it up and it was my first ever Mangrove Jack. I had Brett. I asked the boys what they taste like and Tapper a really great day! said “If you cook a Pig fish with a rock on the bbq, when the fish is ready, throw the fish away and eat the rock”. On the last Friday night, the presentation night of the Fiesta, I was lucky enough to receive lots of prizes. • 1st prize for Tailor, in the adults open comeptition • 1st place for winning the Boat Regatta • 1st place for 9 years + in the kids competition • and an Encouragement award as a junior angler in the open competition

It was a great Fiesta, I had lots of fun and can’t wait to have a go again in 2018. I will keep on fishing so keep on reading.
