SEPTEMBER 30 The Government is mulling over plans to provide more support for the mentally ill in their efforts for inclusivity. Senior Minister of State for Health Amy Khor and Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yaacob have highlighted the need to combat social stigma from the public and strengthen the manpower resource for caregivers. One suggestion was extending the Special Employment Credit scheme, in which the government pays up to 16% of a disabled worker’s monthly wage, to the mentally ill. Be Good Got Moustache? Still one of the most popular initiatives to raise awareness and funds for men’s health, the annual Movember initiative kicks off on November 1. Thornton University of Oxford, [email protected] Recommended Citation Wanasuk, P. , Thornton, T. F. (2015). Aboriginal Tourism as Sustainable Social-Environmental Enterprise (SSEE): A Tlingit Case Study from Southeast Alaska. The International Indigenous Policy Journal, 6(4). DOI: 10.18584/iipj.2015.6.4.8 Aboriginal Tourism as Sustainable Social-Environmental Enterprise (SSEE): A Tlingit Case Study from Southeast Alaska Abstract The Tlingit Aboriginal tourism enterprise named Icy Strait Point in Hoonah, Southeast Alaska is used as a case study to develop the new concept of Sustainable Social-Environmental Enterprise (SSEE). SSEE is defined as an innovative enterprise that has dynamic operational strategies while still maintaining its corporate core values and integrating social, environmental, cultural, economic and political (SECEP) sustainabilities in its operations. The SSEE framework assesses enterprises according to five domains of sustainability: social, environmental, cultural, economic, and political. Applying this framework, we find that while social, economic, and cultural sustainability goals have been achieved in a relatively short time by the Aboriginal tourism enterprise in Hoonah, the political and environmental spheres of sustainability are constrained by the dominant influence of the multinational cruise ship industry over tourism development. Thus, for an emerging tourism enterprise to be sustainable, we suggest each of these livelihood dimensions needs to achieve "a safe operating space" that is adaptable over time and to changing social and environmental circumstances.

Subjects were students (n=201) at Brigham Young University (Utah). Approximately 60 hours of commercial television videos, most in Mandarin Chinese, were recorded from Taiwan television. A pilot test of 5 commercials was conducted. Ten students were given pretests and posttests for each of the video and audio lessons during a 12-lesson course. There was a significant difference in student comprehension between video and audio sessions. Results of a statistical analysis suggest that although both methods produce gains, the use of video is shown be more effective in developing student comprehension than the use of audio alone The audio-only approach did not offer as many cues to meaning and students were dependent on the instructor to explain things notseen. It is suggested that the potential impacts of teacher bias and training and test design be investigated in more detail as wellas the potential impact of television commercial impact versus television programming impact.
