At the same time the supply of food articles in the Nordic supermarkets appear to exhibit a narrower range of products than in other European countries. Against this back- ground, it was decided at the Nordic meeting of Competition Authorities in September 2004 to look closer at the conditions on the Nordic food markets. A Working Group was formed to identify, analyse and propose solutions to the competition problems in the Nordic food markets. This report presents the results and provides recom- mendations on how to promote and ensure a competitive Nordic food market. Agricultural, fi shery and regional policy considerations have not been included in the investigations. The Danish Competition Authority has been the executive committee, and has written the report with contributions from the other Nordic Competition Authorities. The Working Group wishes to use this opportunity to thank the Nordic Council of Ministers for their help and support. 5 6 Executive Summary and Conclusions The Working Group has examined the food markets in the Nordic region. The background is that for some years Nordic food prices have been higher than the European average (EU15, i.e. EU minus the new Eastern European member states). Moreover, the assortment of food in Nordic supermarkets appear to be smaller than in other European countries. High prices in a country means that consumers pay more for goods and services compared to other countries. This can be due to lower productivity or because the costs, such as wage level or profi ts are higher than elsewhere. A more restricted number of food products compared to other countries imply that consumers have less choice, that the producers’ products are less likely to reach supermarket shelves, and that markets tend to be less dy- namic. On that account, there have been good reasons for a closer look at how competition works in the Nordic food industry and the retail sector and at the state of market integra- tion in the Nordic region. Nordic food prices According to Eurostat fi gures for 2004, the average prices paid by consumers for food and beverages (soft drinks and beer) bought in supermarkets in the Nordic region were be- tween 12 per cent and 46 per cent higher than the European average, cf. fi g. 1. In Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden the sales of alcoholic beverages in the supermarkets only contains beer up to 2.25 per cent alc. (Iceland), 3.5 per cent alc. (Sweden), 4.5 per cent alc. (Norway) and 4.7 per cent alc. (Finland). In these countries, the sales of alcoholic beverages are restricted, and prices on alcoholic bever- ages are therefore not the result of the competitive process in the food sector. One reason for the price gap between the Nordic countries and the European average is differences in the level of taxes on the production and sale of food. VAT

Diese Problemstellung habe ich besonders interessant gefunden, da sowohl Aldi als auch Lidl eigentlich eine Kapazität haben, die unmittelbar wesentlich größere Marktanteile auf dem dänischen Markt hätte ergeben sollen. Auf Grundlage von Theorien über Internationalisierung und Konsumentenverhalten wird deshalb untersucht, in wieweit diese beiden Gebiete den begrenzten Erfolg erklären können. Der erste Teil der Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der theoretischen Diskussion über die Internationalisierungsstrategie und die Verhältnisse des Konsumentenverhaltens sowie auch die kulturellen Bedingungen, die Bedeutung für den Einstieg in einen fremden Markt haben. Det har ført til, at de danske brancheorganisationer for grossist- og detailhandlen har anbefalet sine medlemmer at stoppe indkøb af polycarbonat sutteflasker. Flere af de store aktører (COOP, De Samvirkende Købmænd og Dansk Supermarked) havde allerede i maj 2009 taget beslutningen om at ophøre med indkøb af bisphenol A-holdige sutteflasker, og flere af de store dagligvarebutikker har således allerede i nogen tid ikke haft bisphenol A-holdige flasker på hylderne. Størstedelen af dagligvare- og specialbutikker har eller vil inden for de næste måneder have hylder uden polycarbonat sutteflasker. Status for de enkelte kæder og butikker fremgår nedenfor. Dansk Erhverv oplyser, at listen opfatter omkring 95 % af det danske marked for sutteflasker. COOP DK (Kvickly, Super Brugsen og Dagli Brugsen): Har ikke indkøbt polycarbonat sutteflasker siden januar 2009. Der kan være rester tilbage i hand- len, men det vil kun være i de allermindste butikker. Dansk Supermarked A/S (Føtex, Bilka, Netto, Salling): Polycarbonat sutteflasker er udfaset. Apotekerforeningen: Grossister har ikke længere polycarbonat sutteflasker i sortimentet, så udfasningen er godt i gang fra apotekerne. In news that literally just landed from the Great British Beer Festival in time for summer’s TT, congratulations to the region’s breweries for another great Champion Beer of Britain showing. Gold in the ‘Specialist’ category went to Colchester Brewery’s Brazilian Coffee and Vanilla Porter, while silvers went to Mighty Oak’s Captain Bob and Bishop Nick’s 1555 in the ‘Bitter’ and ‘Best Bitter’ categories respectively. Well done to all concerned for the considerable effort involved in even getting to GBBF, never mind doing the day job at the same time! Unhappier tidings are that Chelmsford’s Round Tower is no more. An eleventh-hour plan by a local publican to buy out the brewery as a going concern didn’t come to pass, and we say thanks and goodbye to Simon and Hannah Tippler for some very tasty brews over the last few years. Further on the ‘Breweries Missing in Action’ theme, Felstar are taking a pause from production but are expecting to be back before 2020, according to Franco (via BLO Chris Mills). Seasons in the sun Some of my happiest memories are of the endless summer of ‘76, legendary for its dryness and heat. Summer 2018 is well on its way to surpassing ‘76, and what a summer beerfest we had, never thinking what the weather would be each day... Methods: Within-store audits were used to evaluate and compare the availability of potato chips (crisps), chocolate, confectionery and soft drinks. Displays measured included shelf length and the proportion of checkouts and end-of-aisle displays containing these products. Audits were conducted in a convenience sample of 170 supermarkets across eight developed nations (Australia, Canada, Denmark, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, United Kingdom (UK), and United States of America (US)). Results: The mean total aisle length of snack foods (adjusted for store size) was greatest in supermarkets from the UK (56.4 m) and lowest in New Zealand (21.7 m). When assessed by individual item, the greatest aisle length devoted to chips, chocolate and confectionery was found in UK supermarkets while the greatest aisle length dedicated to soft drinks was in Australian supermarkets.
