', HIS LIFE, POETRY, AND DEATH. is a daring adventure, perhaps, in this more than Au- gustan age of poesy, an age which has produced, it seems, upwards of one hundred hards in our language alone (see Poets of the Nineteenth Century by the Rev. Robert Aris Willmot and Evert A. Duyckinck), to demand the attention of the literary world to another poet of the aforesaid nineteenth century : a poet, too, whose writings have been all published, and whose life has been ended more than ten so that if there was in years ago ; any thing liis work truly excellent, and worthy so enlightened an age, it is presumable that it would have been found out ere now. In that collection of the poetic gems of our time and tongue by Messrs. Willmot and Duyckinck, with its one or two hundred im- mortal names, the name of Clarence Mangan has no place. Mr. Dana, in his highly meritorious, though not altogether blameless, Iloustholl Book of Poetry, displaying specimens and master-pieces " of three or four hundred poets" in our tongue, has, indeed, found room for two of Mangan's translations from the German and those by no means amongst the best. A natural inquiry will sugirt;sl itself to many readers, Who, then, is this new old poet? Mackay we know, and Alexander Smith we know, but who art Thou? If he was indeed a true poet, would not the critical acu- of our have discovered him if he has lain so men literary age ; long in oblivion, let him lie : we have poets enough and to spare. Not by any means desiring to obtrude an obscure parvenu amongst that crowd of immortals, nor intending to pluck one leaf of ivy from the brow of a Mackay or a Smith, or a laurel from the " chaplet of the bard who sings Riflemen. Form !" not designing 8 JAMES CLARENCE MANGAN : to dispute about tastes, or to importune a cultivated public which has its hands and head already too full, and labours only under an embarras Je richesses, I have yet undertaken, at the desire of a bold publisher, to introduce the almost unknown name and writings of James Clarence Mangan modestly and bashfully to American readers. And I am the more emboldened to this en- terprise, in calling to mind with what eager admiration the few samples of his strange melodies which have found their way to the innumerable readers of this continent, were welcomed and rejoiced over. The comparative unacquaintance, also, of Ameri- cans with these poems may be readily accounted for, when we remember how completely British criticism gives the law through- out the literary domain of that semi-barbarous tongue in which I have now the honour to indite. For this Mangan was not only an Irishman, not only an Irish papist, not only an Irish papist rebel; but throughout his whole literary life of twenty years, he never deigned to attorn to English criticism, never published a line in any English periodical, or through any English bookseller, never seemed to be aware that there was a British public to please.

(Alfred Mason), 1840-1896. Dates: 1860s-1880s Quantity: 2 containers (total .8 linear feet) ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION Acquisition: Donated by the estate of Alfred M. Williams upon his death in 1896 as part of the initially named “Alfred M. Williams Collection of Folklore.” Included scrapbooks of ballads collected by the library after the initial bequest including a purchase of three ballads in 1953 from Dana’s Old Corner Bookshop, Providence; purchase of a scrapbook of 40 ballads from William Wreden. A letter from PPL library director in 1967 noted a total of 1,141 irish broadside ballads mostly printed in Dublin or Belfast. 124 English broadside ballads. Accruals: No accruals are expected. Custodial history: The bulk of the ballads were collected by Alfred M. Williams. He collected some himself while in Ireland in 1865-1866. Additional materials were given to him by Sir Samuel Ferguson in 1879 and by Miss Mary Banim in 1886. A note by Williams in the flyleaf of one of the scrapbooks noted that the collection may have been created by Dublin printer, P. Bereton around 1869. Additional items in the collection are stamped with the National Library of Ireland. It is unclear when PPL acquired these items. Processed by: The collection was processed by Kate Wells in 2019.

    Andrea Grunert, ‘Screening the Supernatural: Introduction’ Film Journal 5 / Screening the Supernatural / 2019 / pp. 7-11 Screening the Supernatural: Introduction Andrea Grunert University of Bochum, Germany The supernatural, the fantastic, and mysterious are often regarded as representative of traditional beliefs that are opposed to, and have been overcome, by a modern world of rationality and technology. However, given that as the uncanny (das Unheimliche, in Freud’s terms) merges with the homely and familiar (das Heimliche), the supernatural and the spectres of an outer world are far from being suppressed in contemporary culture.1 References to the Gothic are at the heart of the work of 20th Century as different as Virginia Wolf, Samuel Beckett and Bret Easton Ellis.2 These references might be imitative or parodic, but they still respond to technological threats or achievements as well as to individual or collective fears and to a society, and sometimes a masculinity, in crisis. As Fred Botting puts it: “The uncanny, an effect of the emergence of modernity, participates as much in its constitution and its decomposition.”3 Where cinema is concerned, film is both haunted and haunting, a medium dealing with many ghosts, not only in the genres of the supernatural. The British coastline, similarly, has served as both a secure defence and a space of freedom and abandonment. However, since the decline of both the empire and the maritime industries, these certainties have eroded, along with the physical coastline itself.

    ‘The Return to the People’: Empire, Class, and Religion in Lady Gregory’s Dramatic Works Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Anna Pilz. July 2013 Anna Pilz University of Liverpool 2013 Abstract ‘The Return to the People’: Empire, Class, and Religion in Lady Gregory’s Dramatic Works Anna Pilz This thesis examines a selection of Lady Gregory’s original dramatic works. Between the opening of the Abbey Theatre in 1904 and the playwright’s death in 1932, Gregory’s plays accounted for the highest number of stage productions in comparison to her co-directors William Butler Yeats and John Millington Synge. As such, this thesis analyses examples ranging from her most well-known and successful pieces, including The Rising of the Moon and The Gaol Gate, to lesser known plays such as The Wrens, The White Cockade, Shanwalla and Dave. With a focus on the historical, bibliographical, and political contexts, the plays are analysed not only with regard to the printed texts, but also in the context of theatrical performances. In order to re-evaluate Gregory’s contribution to the Abbey, this thesis is divided into three chapters dealing with dominant themes throughout her career as a playwright: Empire, class, and religion. Finnegans Wake also has songs in it. Many songs: titles, lines, mere words, or simply rhythms that are detected instinctively by those who happen to see them. For those who do not, we are now publishing a book that aims at an inventory of all the music in the book: it is a heavily processed version of J. C. Hodgart and Mabel P. Worthington’s Song in the Works of James Joyce, published in 1959. The songs, too, point to something. They are doors that lead to meaning. Such connections between words, or just sounds, rather, and a large number of things that could only with difficulty be named, are the very essence of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake. Musical Allusions in Finnegans Wake is, however, different from the other books we have published so far in our series of Joyce Lexicography. Those who know that Joyce was one of the best Irish tenors, yet he gave up singing in favour of writing, realize why. The connections between certain words and other words, whether titles of books, excerpts from them, names of authors, or simply words from another language are, eventually, a matter of spoken sounds.
