    Bowdoin College Commencement 1992 One of America’s leading writers of historical fiction, JAMES A. MICHENER has published more than 30 books. His writing career began with the publication in 1947 of a book of interrelated stories titled Tales of the South Pacific, based upon his experiences in the U.S. Navy where he served on 49 different Pacific islands. The work won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize, and inspired one of the most popular Broadway musicals of all time, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, which won its own Pulitzer Prize. Michener’s first book set the course for his career, which would feature works about many cultures with emphasis on the relationships between different peoples and the need to overcome ignorance and prejudice. Random House has published Michener’s works on Japan (Sayonara), Hawaii (Hawaii), Spain (Iberia), Southeast Asia (The Voice of Asia), South Africa (The Covenant) and Poland (Poland), among others. Michener has also written a number of works about the United States, including Centennial, which became a television series, Chesapeake, and Texas. Since 1987, the prolific Michener has written five books, including Alaska and his most recent work, The Novel. His books have been issued in virtually every language in the world. Michener has also been involved in public service, beginning with an unsuccessful 1962 bid for Congress. From 1979 to 1983, he was a member of the Advisory Council to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, an experience which he used to write his 1982 novel Space. The FSC is strategically located between the nation’s main capital cities, approximately 2-5 hours from Sydney, 6-10 hours from Melbourne and just 2 hours from Canberra.   • Screwpile 2020 ORA-1 Analysis
    Screwpile 2020 ORA-1 Analysis Norm Dawley introduced the concept of Fun Races for our community to allow competitive activity to continue locally in this Covid-19 environment. The idea was to get boats out sailing in a fun way while recognizing the limitations of today’s social distancing requirements on sailboat racing. The format is a staggered pursuit style start over a fixed course. Competitors report their rounding times. All racing stops at a fixed time, and the event is scored for the last mark that all competitors round. For Screwpile 2020, the Cruiser circle will use a similar format. In parallel with this effort, I have been working with our PRO for the Screwpile 2020 Cruising circle to understand the impact of the handicapping system that will be used. The PRO for the event, Jay Tyson, wants to make the event safe and fun for cruisers and cruiser racers. Part of that effort will be the introduction of a multi number, VPP based handicap scoring approach for the event. This will provide support for a diverse fleet and sailing conditions. The traditional PHRF handicapping system does not really allow for this situation. We would also like to include/support special limitations. To begin the education process on this approach locally, I have been doing analysis of some of our current race results utilizing PHRF and the multi number scoring system that will be used for Screwpile. I have used the normal scoring that Norm introduced with these Fun Races and the alternate scoring approach that will be used for Screwpile.
