Laser Compound Moving By Phil Ashley-Brown or the last few years the Laser fleet has been Flaunching off A-arm and boats have been stored at a compound in the nearby carpark. The Hunter Development Corporation has since expanded the carpark and the Lasers are now on the move. Thanks to our near neighbour Thales, which is based on the former Forgacs site, the Lasers have a new home. As part of its commitment to the local community, Thales is in the process of finalizing plans for the Lasers and the Elliot’s to be housed on their land, opposite the club house. The plan includes moving the existing pontoons across the ditch to the Thales site and setting up walkways and Dennis Hume & Michael Babbage. access to the site. The Lasers will be stacked and while Michael is the winner of the OTB Division they’ll still be outside, they’ll have a low Colourbond roof to protect them. The plan includes setting up a crane so that the Elliot’s can be moved in and out of the water easily. And while there’s no bar there, it’s not a far row back across the water to the warmth of the NCYC bar, which is only a 6 min walk. It’s a much better site to launch the Lasers as there’s more protection, it’s not so exposed and there are fewer multi-million-dollar yachts to crash into. It’ll be good to have a more permanent storage area for the Lasers and we’re hoping it’ll be finalized for the start of the spring series. Big thanks to Thales for their support in this project.

PAGE 30 ~ Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club Journal ~ Spring 2019 Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta (AWKR) 2019 Article by Peta Norris & Kris Anderson Photos courtesy of Bruno Cocozza combined team from NCYC and Gosford ASailing Club (GSC) have successfully defended their 2018 IRC Division 1 crown at the 29th annual Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta (AWKR) held over the June long weekend on a cold and windy Port Phillip Bay. AWKR, Australia’s largest all-female keelboat regatta, is raced out of the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron (RMYS) at St Kilda. This year’s regatta saw 40 teams enter with representation from every Australian state Racing aboard the mighty ‘Jungle Juice’, an Adams 10 and territory, as well as New Zealand. The fleet was generously loaned for the second year by Janet Dean, highly competitive, past Commodore of RMYS, this year’s winning crew with multiple followed this advice and sailed consistently well, as a Olympians, team, for the full regatta. Before going into the final race match racing of the series on Day 3, on equal points for 1st place with champions, Volvo Ocean Respect Racing in IRC Division and 2nd place Ocean race and with Chutzpah in AMS Division, each crew member Sydney to Hobart committed to what she could do to deliver that crucial veterans, and a second or half-second that would win or lose the regatta. late entry from For some of us this even meant denying ourselves that Katie Spithill’s Ocean Respect Racing team ramped the extra glass of bubbles the night before!! competition up a further notch. Melbourne’s Port Phillip Bay, which each year delivers either too little or too We were fully pumped for action as we lined up for this much wind, showed its wild side, sending cold, choppy defining moment and, on cue, Melbourne’s notorious and increasingly gusty conditions, setting the stage for weather produced her wild card. The first attempt at a some seriously good racing. race start was abandoned as a wild front blew through the fleet. Unfazed, our seasoned offshore skipper and It was wonderful to see in excess of 250 passionate, crew kept our heads together (and the pointy thing in the excited sailors at the Friday night briefing, where we air!) and got a fabulous start when the committee finally were awed with video messages and race tips from got us away. Unfortunately for the Ocean Respect Team Magenta Project organisers and Volvo ocean racing a pre-start collision left them unable to compete and greats. These ranged from Liz Wardley’s hot tip to they headed to shore and the protest room. Jungle Juice “go out there and win, and if you don’t win, work out and team handled the challenging conditions well (gusts what you can do better and come out fighting again up to 38 knots, numerous retirements and a dismasting) tomorrow” was balanced by Magenta Project Chair to sail a good, tidy, fast (!) 3-lap decider with no major Elaine Penhaul who gave the advice she offered her wipeouts and no damage, finishing second on scratch in young children when they took to the water, “keep front of much larger boats to win both divisions. Even the pointy thing in the air and be nice to one other”. with a successful protest for redress by the disappointed Somewhere in the middle was French Volvo racer Ocean Respect Team, Jungle Juice came up winners Tiphaine Turlache, who summed up some great advice with overall 1st place in IRC Div 1 and 2nd place in with “…and keep trimming!!” AMS Div 1. Now THAT’s what I call sailing!! Teamwork and fun, on and off the water, have been fundamental elements of regatta racing for NCYC since Jan Howard and Mary Holley kicked us off in 2014, and the combined NCYC/GSC AWKR crew follow this lead. The team plans the campaign together, stays together, cooks together, races hard and puts the fun factor into full flight. This regatta, enabled by the generosity of local boat owners and a hard-working band of organisers and volunteers, epitomizes this mix of teamwork, camaraderie, competition and fun and is an absolute highlight of the women’s sailing calendar. And to be in the company of such talented female sailors is truly inspiring.

PAGE 32 ~ Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club Journal ~ Spring 2019 Mooloolaba Yacht Club’s SheSAILS Regatta By Peta Norris ver the last weekend in June, NCYC team of Meika OWright, Janease Graham, Belinda Davey and Peta Norris were warmly welcomed when they made their CONGRATULATIONS ON way north for some sunshine and Elliott 6 racing at CELEBRATING 20 YEARS Mooloolaba Yacht Club’s inaugural SheSAILS regatta. Mooloolaba sent two teams to our SheSAILS@NCYC regatta in November last year and obviously liked the idea so much that they decided to hold their own! Racing was held on the club’s Elliott 6s, which had only recently been set up for offshore racing. Unfortunately, a big swell and treacherous bar meant that the Elliotts were confined inshore for the regatta. This did however make for great spectator viewing from the verandah of the clubhouse. Racing inshore at Mooloolaba was tight in every possible way. The course was confined by moored boats, narrow passage and shallow water. Meika Team ‘Deep Ship’ found themselves in not-so-deep when they ran aground on day 1, earning them the race officer’s award! Eight races were held on the Saturday and six races on the Sunday between eight teams on the club’s four boats. The NCYC Belinda ‘Screaming Jets’, renamed For more information visit once we arrived and saw the creative team names www.newcastlegamefishingclub.com.au like Alenka Caserman’s ‘Pink Pirates’ and Danielle Kennedy’s ‘Titanic Swim Team’, came in third overall after two days of racing, behind the Mooloolaba Yacht Club’s Youth Team and Kristen Davidson’s ‘Backstitch’, ENTERTAINMENT with well-known crew member Stacey Jackson and forward hand Carmen Barney who received a special mention for her super enthusiastic kite throwing. Two highlights for the NCYC team were when Bel SUNDAY received the sportsmanship award and Meika received the best start award. Both absolutely well-deserved! AFTERNOONS The Mooloolaba Yacht Club won the QLD SheSAILS Australian Sailing award this year for their women’s LIVE MUSIC program. We hope to see another @NCYC Mooloolaba team or two at NCYC’s next SheSAILS regatta to be held on the Elliott 6s in November. Meika, Janease, Belinda and Peta
