A more competitive group of owners started adding sail area and stripping out accommodation from their boats. Most people’s perception of a sports boat is a trailerable sailing boat with masses of sail area. While this was the genesis of sports boats there has been a gradual change. It became evident that sports boats needed to form their own separate group. ASBA was founded in 2007 by Cameron Rae, Mark Roberts and Richard Parkes. They wanted a more scientific handicapping system than had been employed in the past. In 2008 the Sportsboat Measurement System (SMS) was put in place by a body independent to ASBA. It was created by the same people who formulated the Australian Measurement System (AMS) in 1997. Sports boat racing has flourished across Australia under the ASBA banner, with the SMS rule encouraging high performance designs without the penalties that existed under other systems. Large asymmetrical spinnakers, in particular, are not penalised as harshly in the rating as the working sail area is, so that is why you see the sports boats with clouds of sails downwind. In Australia sports boats are defined as being between 5.8m and 8.5m in length and no more than 3.5m wide including hiking racks.

    A Few Different Sleeping Sites, 1950-2010 William V. Davidson, Cultural Geographer My Five Favorites 1. Tulum ruins, Quintana Roo, México, 1965. In my jungle hammock in ruins, at structure 20, completely alone for a few nights. This photograph was taken with a self-timer on my 35 mm camera. I was looking for evidence of a sac-be, one of the ancient “white roads” of the Maya that ran from the coast to interior sites. The residents of the hamlet of Tulum, a couple of miles away, were visited, but they were so poor (and perhaps too suspicious of me) they refused to give me even a tortilla. They did allow me to fill my water jug from their well. Water in the small cenote within the walls at Tulum looked a bit dirty for drinking. However, it was a nice place to bathe before going to sleep. 2. Taj Mahal, Agra, India, 1962. To fulfill a childhood desire, following a stunt by Richard Halliburton, on August 14, under a full moon, I slept on the hard, cold marble floor next to the tomb in the Taj Mahal in Agra, India. I was in India for the summer participating in the Experiment in International Living. 3. Bolivian Altiplano, August 1963. South of Lago Titicaca: abandoned Chipaya-Puquina sod house. Yes, it was cold at 13,000+ feet elevation in the South American winter. With brother Junie and pilot uncle Thayne Muller, while on our single-engine flight around South America. Our only projects around here were to visit the largest South American pilgrimage at Copacabana on the shore of Lake Titicaca and to seek sites of the indigenous Uru people.

    DID YOU KNOW The late Ben Lexcen designer of the famous “winged keel” on “Australia II,” was an RQYS Member from 1961 to 1968. When skippered by John Bertrand in 1983, “Australia II” became the first non - American yacht to win the America’s Cup in its then 132 year history. Bill Kirby FLYING DUTCHMAN CLASS/BEN LEXCEN/BOB MILLER In 1958, the Royal Queensland Yacht Club introduced the International Flying Dutchman Olympic Class two - man dinghy into its fleet. Commodore the late John H “Jock” Robinson announced in his Annual Report for the year that the striking of a levy to assist Australian Olympic Yachting at the 1964 Games at Naples had been approved unanimously. The 1961 – 1962 Australian Champions in the International Flying Dutchman Class were Squadron Members Craig Whitworth, skipper and Bob Miller, forward hand sailing in the “AS Huybers.” The boat was made available for Craig and Bob to sail via efforts of the late Past Commodore Alf Huybers, a well - known businessman of the time in Brisbane and proprietor of Queensland Pastoral Supplies. I was told recently by Bill Wright of Norman R Wright & Sons that Bob Miller was apprenticed as a Sailmaker to his Uncle, Norman J Wright, at the Florite sail loft run by George Manders and seamstress Mrs Lauman. Norman J Wright taught Bob Miller basic yacht design and they teamed up to design the first 3 Man 18 foot skiff “Taipan.” That was closely followed by the World Champion 18 Footer, “Venom” and I was also told by Bill the rig plan of “Taipan” and “Venom” closely followed that of a Flying Dutchman.
