  • Grace” Owned and Built by Grahame Harris Finished 2015, a TREAD LIGHTLY Design by John Welsford
    1. “Grace” Owned and built by Grahame Harris finished 2015, a TREAD LIGHTLY design by John Welsford. Built over a 3 year period from Meranti ply - fibreglassed over (up to the 2nd chine). The original 14ft design has been 'stretched’ to just under 17ft and she carries approx. 230 litres of water ballast. Grace flies a 4 sided “balanced lugsail” of approx 130 sq ft, has twin skegs and twin rudders. She has a 15hp Yamaha outboard mounted in the cockpit. Her name Grace, is a play on the design name “Tread Lightly” 2 ½ years to build in the shed. Carbon fibre 2 pce mast, 6hp 4 stroke outboard in motor well. Sleeps 2 comfortably. Full of BURNSCO accessories - from my work. 2. “Jameelah” Owned by Peter and Raewyn Dunlop. Built in 1994 by Honnor Marine, Devon, UK. Designed by Drascombe Lugger. 5.72m yacht. bought in 2005 from a friend when they lived in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and on relocating to New Zealand brought her along with them. The name “Jameelah” is an Arabic word used when describing a beautiful woman which we think is very appropriate. The design is based on the original coastal fishing boats of north east England. The mizzen mast and tan sails giving her a traditional look and excellent all weather sailing qualities. She has a GRP hull and deck finished with hard wood trim. The mast is varnished timber and her rig design is “sliding gunter” which allows the top part of the mast to be easily lowered when at anchor or negotiating low structures.

  • Modelling Radiation Exposure and Radionuclide Transfer for Non-Human Species
Modelling Radiation Exposure and Radionuclide Transfer for Non-human Species Report of the Biota Working Group of EMRAS Theme 3 Environmental Modelling for RAdiation Safety (EMRAS) Programme FOREWORD Environmental assessment models are used for evaluating the radiological impact of actual and potential releases of radionuclides to the environment. They are essential tools for use in the regulatory control of routine discharges to the environment and also in planning measures to be taken in the event of accidental releases; they are also used for predicting the impact of releases which may occur far into the future, for example, from underground radioactive waste repositories. It is important to check, to the extent possible, the reliability of the predictions of such models by comparison with measured values in the environment or by comparing with the predictions of other models. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been organizing programmes of international model testing since the 1980s. The programmes have contributed to a general improvement in models, in transfer data and in the capabilities of modellers in Member States. The documents published by the IAEA on this subject in the last two decades demonstrate the comprehensive nature of the programmes and record the associated advances which have been made. From 2003 to 2007, the IAEA organised a programme titled “Environmental Modelling for RAdiation Safety” (EMRAS). The programme comprised three themes: Theme 1: Radioactive Release Assessment ⎯ Working Group 1: Revision of IAEA Technical Report Series No. 364 “Handbook of parameter values for the prediction of radionuclide transfer in temperate environments (TRS-364) working group; ⎯ Working Group 2: Modelling of tritium and carbon-14 transfer to biota and man working group; ⎯ Working Group 3: the Chernobyl I-131 release: model validation and assessment of the countermeasure effectiveness working group; ⎯ Working Group 4: Model validation for radionuclide transport in the aquatic system “Watershed-River” and in estuaries working group.

  • Portsmouth Number List 2019
Portsmouth Number List 2019 The RYA Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme is provided to enable clubs to allow boats of different classes to race against each other fairly. The RYA actively encourages clubs to adjust handicaps where classes are either under or over performing compared to the number being used. The Portsmouth Yardstick list combines the Portsmouth numbers with class configuration and the total number of races returned to the RYA in the annual return. This additional data has been provided to help clubs achieve the stated aims of the Portsmouth Yardstick system and make adjustments to Portsmouth Numbers where necessary. Clubs using the PN list should be aware that the list is based on the typical performance of each boat across a variety of clubs and locations. Experimental numbers are based on fewer returns and are to be used as a guide for clubs to allocate as a starting number before reviewing and adjusting where necessary. The list of experimental Portsmouth Numbers will be periodically reviewed by the RYA and is based on data received via PY Online. Users of the PY scheme are reminded that all Portsmouth Numbers published by the RYA should be regarded as a guide only. The RYA list is not definitive and clubs should adjust where necessary. • I Feel the Need…
44 AUSTRALIAN SAILING AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2017 MYSAILING.COM.AU 45 SPORTSBOATS BETH MORLEY SPORTSAILINGPHOTOGRAPHY.COM SPORTS BOATS I FEEL THE NEED… ANDREW YORK LOOKS AT THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPORTSBOATS AND HOW THEY NEED TO BE SAILED IT was in the early years of this century that sports boats broke away from their trailer-sailer forebears. A more competitive group of owners started adding sail area and stripping out accommodation from their boats. Most people’s perception of a sports boat is a trailerable sailing boat with masses of sail area. While this was the genesis of sports boats there has been a gradual change. It became evident that sports boats needed to form their own separate group. ASBA was founded in 2007 by Cameron Rae, Mark Roberts and Richard Parkes. They wanted a more scientific handicapping system than had been employed in the past. In 2008 the Sportsboat Measurement System (SMS) was put in place by a body independent to ASBA. It was created by the same people who formulated the Australian Measurement System (AMS) in 1997. Sports boat racing has flourished across Australia under the ASBA banner, with the SMS rule encouraging high performance designs without the penalties that existed under other systems. Large asymmetrical spinnakers, in particular, are not penalised as harshly in the rating as the working sail area is, so that is why you see the sports boats with clouds of sails downwind. In Australia sports boats are defined as being between 5.8m and 8.5m in length and no more than 3.5m wide including hiking racks.
