ACQUISITION of GENDER in RUSSIAN * Oksana Tarasenkova University of Connecticut 1 The Background In adult Russian grammar the gender feature of nouns is closely related to their declension class. Their relationship was a controversial question that evoked two opposing views regarding the way gender is represented in adult Russian grammar. The representatives of one view argue for gender to be derived from the noun declension class (Declension-to Gender account, Corbett 1982), while proponents of the opposite account argue for the reversed pattern, where the inflectional morphology can be predicted from the information on the noun gender along with a phonological cue (Gender-to-Declension account, Vinogradov 1960, Thelin 1975, Crockett 1976 among others). My goal is to focus on children’s acquisition of gender in Russian in order to compare these two major divisions of research. They provide different morphological analyses of gender forms in Russian; therefore this debate makes different predictions about the acquisition of gender by children. I tested these opposing predictions using children’s data gathered from an experiment to identify what exactly children rely on when assigning gender to nouns. The experiment results support the Declension-to-Gender view and provide evidence that children are significantly more successful at assigning gender to the novel nouns relying on the nominal declension paradigm rather than on the adjectival agreement. The way gender is represented in adults’ competence grammar might not necessarily be the correct model of children’s acquisition of gender. The child has to learn the gender of a significant number of nouns and extract the declensional paradigms first in order to then be able to learn and apply these redundancy rules for novel nouns. -

1168 Complementation of verbs and adjectives Verbs in relation to verb complementation 11-69 They may be either copular (clause pattern SVC), or complex transitive verbs, or monotransitive verbs with a noun phrase object), we can give only (clause pattern SVOC): a sample of common verbs. In any case, it should be borne in mind that the list of verbs conforming to a given pattern is difficult to specífy exactly: there SVC: break even, plead guilty, Iie 101V are many differences between one variety of English and another in respect SVOC: cut N short, work N loose, rub N dry of individual verbs, and many cases of marginal acceptability. Sometimes the idiom contains additional elements, such as an infinitive (play hard to gel) or a preposition (ride roughshod over ...). Note The term 'valency' (or 'valencc') is sometimes used, instead of complementation, ror the way in (The 'N' aboye indicates a direct object in the case oftransitive examples.) which a verb determines the kinds and number of elements that can accompany it in the clause. Valency, however, incIudes the subject 01' the clause, which is excluded (unless extraposed) from (b) VERB-VERB COMBINATIONS complementation. In these idiomatic constructions (ef 3.49-51, 16.52), the second verb is nonfinite, and may be either an infinitive: Verbs in intransitive function 16.19 Where no eomplementation oecurs, the verb is said to have an INTRANSITIVE make do with, make (N) do, let (N) go, let (N) be use. Nonnative acquisition of Verb Second: On the empirical underpinnings of universal L2 claims Ute Bohnacker Lund University Abstract Acquiring Germanic verb second is typically described as difficult for second-language learners. Even speakers of a V2-language (Swedish) learning another V2-language (German) are said not to transfer V2 but to start with a non-V2 grammar, following a universal developmental path of verb placement. The present study contests this claim, documenting early targetlike V2 production for 6 Swedish ab-initio (and 23 intermediate) learners of German, at a time when their interlanguage syntax elsewhere is nontargetlike (head-initial VPs). Learners whose only nonnative language is German never violate V2, indicating transfer of V2-L1 syntax. Informants with previous knowledge of English are less targetlike in their L3-German productions, indicating interference from non-V2 English. OTKA PD 73826 Final Report Cross-Categorial Case Anne Tamm, PI September 30th, 2010 1 The guide to the final report of OTKA PD 73826 by the PI 1.1 Reasons for submitting the final report ahead of time As Principal Investigator of OTKA PD 73826 "Cross-Categorial Case," I am submitting the final report 8 months ahead of time. This requires some explanation. The final report is submitted in order to close the project for formal reasons. Namely, as of August 1, 2010, I transferred to another job for main funding. I filed a request to the OTKA office in July 2010, with the goal of finding an appropriate funding scheme for the remaining research time, until March 31, 2011. Since there were no appropriate funding schemes, the funding was stopped on July 31, 2010 instead of March 31, 2011 and a final report has to be delivered. Thus, this report documents the activities performed within the OTKA framework between April 1st, 2008 and July 31, 2010, covering 2.3 years instead of the planned 3 years of funding. The lack of a suitable scheme is the main reason for closing the project 8 months ahead of time. I would like to resume my research and publishing as soon as a suitable OTKA funding scheme emerges. 1.2 The original workplan (3 years and 2 years) The original plan encompassed three years instead of the two years that I was actually able to complete. The research goal of 3 years was to prepare a monographic manuscript for publication and two articles. -

Chapter 4 Nouns, Pronouns and Noun Phrases
Chapter 4 NounsNouns,, Pronouns and Noun phrases In Menggwa Dla, nouns denote entities (real or imagined), abstract ideas and properties. A noun phrase consists of a head noun on its own, or a head noun plus one or more modifiers, all of which must be contiguous to each other (with exceptions; see §4.3). Three nominal categories are grammaticalised in Menggwa Dla grammar: person, genders (§4.1) and number (§4.2). However, these nominal categories are not marked within the noun phrases. Instead, the person, gender and number categories of a nominal are manifested by cross-reference suffixes (§5.2). Nouns can be modified by various modifiers: adjectives, genitive phrases, proprietive/ abessive phrases, demonstratives, degree qualifiers, quantifiers and relative clauses (§4.3). There are no morphological differences between proper names and common nouns (§4.4). On the noun phrase level there are the numerous case clitics and other nominal clitics like the topic clitic and focus clitics (§4.5). Different sets of pronouns are used in different positions (§4.6). There are the ‘citation pronouns’ which are used in topic/ subject positions or in isolation, and there are only three of them, each marking only a person category: yo first person (‘I’/ ‘We’), si second person (i.e. ‘you’) and ai third person (‘s/he/it/they’). There are also the object pronouns, genitive pronouns and subject resumptive pronouns which have fifteen or sixteen members, each marking different person, number and 186 gender combinations. These pronouns also mark a distinction of inclusive versus exclusive first person; nowhere else in Menggwa Dla (and Dla proper) grammar is the distinction of exclusive versus inclusive first person grammaticalised (see §4.6). -

ISSN 2411-9598 (Print) European Journal of Jan-Apr 2016 ISSN 2411-4103 (Online) Language and Literature Studies Vol.4, Nr. 1 History and Typology of the Instrumental Case (Based on the Comparative Study of the Literary Documents in Turkic Languages) Aynur Gadimaliyeva Assistant Professor, Azerbaijan State University of Economics, Department of Azerbaijani Language [email protected] Abstract This article touches upon the research, which employing comparative historical approach has been carried on about the instrument-togetherness (instrumental) case – the seventh case of noun, which is used in most of the Turkic languages, but has been removed from grammar books after becoming archaic in the Azerbaijani literary language. This case, having kept its place in the history of development of the Azerbaijani language is still evident in stabilised state within some lexical units through the suffixes –ın, in, which are the morphological indicators of the instrumental case. As postpositions birlə, bilə, ilə, - la, -lə denote togetherness, this has caused the expulsion of the instrumental case from among the case paradigm. This article uses the samples selected from the XV century literary works, analyzes the morphological indicators of this ancient case, and compares them to the sources in other Turkic languages. Keywords: Azerbaijani-Turkic language, noun, instrument-togetherness (instrumental) case Introduction The case category of noun has been stabilised after going through a certain path of historical development. As such, as the grammatical structure of the language became stabilised, the case system has also evolved and the process of attachment of the case indicators to individual cases has gained momentum.
