Position Professor of Housing and Urban Sociology IBF (Institute for Housing and Urban Research) | Uppsala University Contact P O Box 514, SE-751 20. Uppsala (Sweden) Phone: +46 (0)18 471 65 45 Fax: +46 (0)18 471 65 01 Email: [email protected] Website: www.miguelangelmartinez.net Background My first interests focused on Participatory-Action-Research methods and processes. These were applied to the study of citizen participation in urban planning and urban movements, which nurtured my PhD dissertation in 2000. Afterwards, I held teaching positions in different universities of Spain, Portugal and Hong Kong. In parallel to my academic career I also worked professionally at the Municipal Housing Department in Vigo (2000-2002) and occasionally as a consultant in several urban plans across Spain. Other topics I have covered in my research are urban sustainability, segregation, housing, migration, density, globalisation, urban mobility, politics, governance, labour, and social structures. These concerns were developed in different cities (mainly Porto, Vigo, Madrid and Hong Kong, but also during short stays in Medellin, Chicago, Beijing, Berlin, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, etc.). In addition I have often participated in various social movements that, in turn, became one of my main research subjects. Education B.A.-M.A. in Sociology and Political Science. This has many reasons. First the most obvious: many of these publications remain unknown to Central and East European scholars either due to fi nancial reasons or the lack of connections or knowledge of languages.

In setting out on his path of research, he understands that he must tread not only with the impartiality required by the objectivity of his method but also with the intellectual honesty, the responsibility, and I would say with a kind of “reverence”, which befit the human spirit in its drawing near to truth. For the scientist, to understand in an ever better way the particular reality of man in relation to the biological-physical processes of nature, to discover always new aspects of the cosmos, to know more about the location and the distri- bution of resources, the social and environmental dynamics, and the logic of progress and development, becomes translated into a duty to serve more fully the whole of mankind, to which he belongs. For this reason, the ethical and moral responsibilities connected to scientific research can be perceived as a requirement within science, because it is a fully human activity, but not as control, or worse, as an imposition which comes from outside. The man of science knows perfectly, from the point of view of his knowledge, that truth cannot be subject to negotiation, cannot be obscured or abandoned to free conventions or agreements between groups of power, societies, or States.

Henning Division Director August 1992 Preceding Annual Reviews ANL-89/11 1988-1989 ANL-90/18 1989-1990 ANL-91/12 1990-1991 Edited by Karen J. Thayer ii FOREWORD This past year has brought about several important developments for the ANL Physics Division. The new superconducting positive-ion injector (PII) for ATLAS has been completed and commissioned successfully. Just recently a uranium beam of excellent quality was accelerated to 5.7 MeV/u. The various activities from the aftermath of the Tiger Team visit have been completed and the research program at ATLAS has fully resumed under improved conditions and ~200 scientists and students participated in research at ATLAS during the year. Activities in Medium-Energy Physics aimed at an experimental program at CEBAF have accelerated with the cons- truction of the SOS spectrometer and the approval of several additional ANL experi- ments for the first phase of CEBAF operation. The atomic physics initiative towards a program at the Argonne Advanced Photon Source (APS) has been formulated and first experiments using the NSLS at Brookhaven, aimed at the additional development of the future program at the APS, have begun. The new superconducting positive-ion injector (PII) for ATLAS was completed and tested successfully for the first time during March by accelerating a beam of 40^rll+i The success of this test constitutes final proof of the technical sound- ness of this novel accelerator concept based on acceleration from very low vel- ocities by independently-phased superconducting resonators.

Zboray, Professor, Communication ii Copyright © by Christine Jacqueline Feldman 2009 iii “‘WE ARE THE MODS’: A TRANSNATIONAL HISTORY OF A YOUTH CULTURE” Christine Jacqueline Feldman, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2009 Mod youth culture began in the postwar era as way for young people to reconfigure modernity after the chaos of World War II. Through archival research, oral history interviews, and participant observation, this work traces Mod’s origins from dimly lit clubs of London’s Soho and street corners of the city’s East End in the early sixties, to contemporary, country-specific expressions today. By specifically examining Germany, Japan, and the U.S., alongside the U.K., I show how Mod played out in countries that both lost and won the War. The Mods’ process of refashioning modernity—inclusive of its gadgetry and unapologetic consumerism—contrasts with the more technologically skeptical and avowedly less materialistic Hippie culture of the later sixties. Each chapter, which unfolds chronologically, begins with a contemporary portrait of the Mod scene in a particular country, followed by an overview stretching back to its nineteenth- century conceptions of modernity and a section that describes Mod’s initial impact there during the 1960s.
