2020 Annual Report Pandemic Edition Our Mission + Vision

The Lawrence Public Library Friends & Foundation secures gifts from the community to supplement and strengthen the public’s investment in the Library.

The Friends & Foundation shall establish, promote, maintain, endow, and render aid and assistance for the immediate and long-term needs of the Library through financial support, volunteer service, and advocacy.

01 Letter from the Chair

April 13, 2021

LPL Board of Trustees,

To say the year that this report covers has been unusual is a true understatement. Nearly everything the organization has accomplished has been a unique experience. Each endeavor has required “outside the box” thinking and the individuals involved in each have certainly excelled in this.

Let me mention a few of these endeavors for 2020:

$81,390 raised through book sales on Facebook Live, Amazon, eBay, and individual appointments.

$28,000 raised by the See Lawrence: Parks & Green Spaces project’s sales of WPA-style postcards and posters designed by area artists.

Hundreds of seniors engaged through Retirement Boot Camp, a new and imaginative series of programs for retirees and wannabe retirees.

Due to COVID, all of these and other programs have been virtual.

It has been my pleasure to be associated with this group of dedicated, smart, and interesting lovers of Lawrence Public Library. The future looks bright, indeed, for the Friends & Foundation, but this past year has been one for the books.

We truly have been better together…

Sincerely,

Mary Burchill, Chair LPL Friends & Foundation

04 2020 Friends & Foundation Highlights

Merger Celebration

On January 19, Friends & Foundation volunteers and supporters gathered to officially launch the newly merged organization. Attendees enjoyed live music from the Beer Bellies, scored a pair of really cool socks, and celebrated the new board led by Mary Burchill, our stellar chair who has served as a library volunteer for nearly 50 years.

After Hours at the Library

The Friends & Foundation hosted another successful After Hours at the Library party for Leap Day. This huge “community hug” came together with the help of 21 sponsors, 12 local restaurants, 18 basket donors, 80+ volunteers, and hundreds of attendees and supporters. In all, this event raised $37,000 for the library.

Book Sales in the Time of COVID

Angela Hyde and the book sale volunteers put together an incredible plan to keep our book sale operations going. They pioneered Facebook Live book sales, kept the Amazon and eBay operations thriving, and developed an impressive safety protocol that allowed volunteers to continue accepting and processing book donations. In total, book sales raised more than $81,000 for the library in 2020.

Online Fundraisers

Thanks to the ingenuity of the Friends & Foundation’s fundraising committee and the support of our good friend Deja Brooks, we hosted Anti-Viral BINGO and a special Drag BINGO for Banned Books Week. These two events raised $2,200 for the library. Together with Jeff and Mary Weinberg, Deja stepped up again, this time for Summer Reading. The Party in Place raised $10,000 to help the library meet the community’s demand for digital resources.

05 2020 Friends & Foundation Highlights

CARES Act Assistance

The Friends & Foundation was fortunate to receive a total of $28,700 in operating support through the federal CAREs Act. The organization’s application for a Payroll Protection Program loan provided $21,200 in relief. In addition, a special CARES Act grant through Kansas Humanities added $7,500 to support our staff.

See Lawrence: Parks & Green Spaces

One of the bright spots of 2020 was the Lawrence Parks Project. This effort raised more than $28,000 for the library through sales of postcards and posters. A huge “Thank you!” goes to Mary Gage for her creative thinking and unrelenting work to help make this project a success. In addition, Logan Isaman’s logistical brilliance made it all happen: she created an online store, set up a distribution system with the library’s Accounts department, and drove to Topeka nearly every Friday to pick up posters.

Florence Eggert

The Friends & Foundation were honored to receive a $178,000 bequest from longtime library patron Florence Eggert. She was so impressed with the service she received from the library that she directed that her gift be used for staff bonuses. It is a wonderful tribute.

06 2020 Friends & Foundation Highlights

Retirement Boot Camp

The Friends & Foundation’s Retirement Boot Camp program, funded through a grant from the Kansas Health Foundation, officially completed its first year in 2020. Weekly and monthly events, including BINGO, Coffee Break, Downsizer’s Club, Dessert and a Movie, and Wine Around the World, were enthusiastically received. Most importantly, our retirees report that these programs have kept them engaged and feeling less isolated during the pandemic. “Drill Sargeant” Cathy Hamilton is the brains and energy behind this program and deserves all the credit for its success.

Endowment Milestone

The LPL Friends & Foundation’s endowment at the Douglas County Community Foundation topped $3 million for the first time ever in 2020. Grants from these funds have been transformative to the library. They provide support for the Beach Author Series, local history digitization resources, Summer Reading, Dr. Bob Reader books, SOUND+VISION Studio projects, Read Across Lawrence, the Weave a Tale Storytelling Workshop, and so much more.

09 Volunteer Awards

Mary Dalton Volunteer Award

Cristi Hansen as our Mary Dalton volunteer award winner. Without her help we would have been in a very sore spot. She has religiously volunteered at the donation box two days a week (sometimes more), and has learned to ship our Amazon orders. She volunteered for the biggest order day (Tuesdays). Cristi has also been active volunteering at DGCO vaccination clinics and her church.

Volunteer in Pandemic (VIP) Cashier Award

Julie Trowbridge-Alford receives Volunteer in Pandemic (VIP) Cashier. She is here every single weekday for the 1-3 PM cashier spot. It’s been so hard to get cashiers for the afternoons, but Julie has been a solid volunteer for the whole pandemic. She’s great with customers and has learned to do shelving and scanning while she waits for customers to complete their purchases.

Volunteer in Pandemic (VIP) Poster Award

Janie Marples receives Volunteer in Pandemic VIP Poster award. She is in the Amazon room three days a week, sometimes more, for 2+ hours each day. Since the pandemic started, Janie has posted 2334 books. At least 1200 of these books have already sold! She loves to learn new things about reselling books and she’s great at it!

Community BFF Partner

Love Garden Sounds gets our Community BFF Partner. Kelly at Love Garden keeps the dollar bin stocked with our CDs and shares the profits with us. He also pays us typical resell prices for the really good ones! This partnership has been a great way to get CDs out to the community and we’re helping each other out. It takes lots of time to make this partnership work, and we’re glad Kelly volunteers his time to support the library in this unique way.
