2 Questions & Answers with Audrey B. Smith: Hospice House’s New Executive Director

How long have you and your family lived in Williamsburg? We moved to Williamsburg from the D.C. area in 1998 and have raised 3 children here. My husband grew up in Williamsburg -- his father has lived in Skipwith Farms for 6 decades.

What do you like most about Williamsburg? Williamsburg has the perfect blend of com- munity and culture. I love that I can walk to DOG street to the farmers market in the morning, ride the ferry to go horseback riding in Smithfield and be back for a William & Mary Tribe game – all in one day! And, it is a great community of people from all around the world and right around the corner.

Do you have any prior experience with hospice care or with Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg? I got involved with Hospice House almost the moment we moved “back” to Williamsburg from the D.C. area. I directed the campaign planning study and the campaign to build the house. With nearly 30 years of work with non-profits, I can honestly say I have never seen a enthusiastic group of volunteers and a community more committed to the success of a project than those I met through the Campaign to Build Hospice House. It is a feeling I have never forgotten. And, I have enjoyed ongoing friendships and working relationships with many of those same volunteers through the years.

What was it about Hospice House that made you want to volunteer your time and talent originally? Truly, I think it came from knowing on a personal level how difficult the death of a family member can be without hospice support.

As a former member of the Board of Directors, how have you seen Hospice House evolve over the years? Hospice House has evolved in all the right ways over the years. More importantly, it has stayed the same in the right ways too! While the endowment has grown and volunteer support has expanded, the organization has stayed true to its mission.

What work and life experiences do you feel prepared you for this new role as HHSCW Executive Director? I don’t think there is one specific path that ensures success in any role, but I do believe my decades of experience in nonprofit leadership and fundraising combined with my very personal experience with my mother’s death from cancer and our struggle to navigate her illness and death without the support of a Hospice House puts many things in perspective. I hope that I can put my work and life experience to positive use for HHSCW going forward. It is a wonderful opportunity and I am very grateful for this new challenge.

What is your vision for Hospice House? To continue to support our community. How that will be defined must be informed through time on the ground working with my new team and the board. I am excited to get started!

How will you measure your success in terms of your management of HHSCW a year or two from now? Stay tuned. I can’t wait to answer this question!

What is one thing you would like the friends of HHSCW to know about you? That I cannot wait to get to know you! Please come see me at Hospice House. To reach Audrey, you can email [email protected] or call 757.253.1220.

3 Hospice House Says Farewell to Linda Taylor Stallings, Hospice House’s First Paid Executive Director By Carol Occhuizzo

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” John Quincy Adams For the last three decades, Linda Taylor Stallings has been that kind of leader for Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg. While serving as HHSCW’s Executive Director and for a time, as a volunteer on its Board of Directors, she has inspired countless others to dream, learn, and do as they work to meet the hospice mission: a goal of providing compassionate care for those facing the end of life and support for their loved ones. Linda began her career with Hospice in 1983, when hired as its first paid Executive Director. In those early years, hospice was a relatively new concept and was not fully understood by the medical community and the general public. Linda worked diligently with local and state hospice volunteers to promote awareness, provide education, and to increase the services available to all in the Williamsburg community. During this time, she also served as President of the statewide Virginia Hospice Association.

After a brief move to Ohio, Linda returned to Williamsburg in 1994 and began her volunteer time with Hospice. She served on the Board of Directors from 1996 to 2002 during the capital campaign to build Hospice House. Hospice House opened to guests in 2002. In 2004, the Board of Directors again selected Linda to serve as Hospice House’s Executive Director. Today, with a budget that has almost doubled, the services of Hospice House touch an estimated 4,500 individuals with life-limiting illness, family, friends, visitors, and community members per year. “From the start, Linda exhibited the combination of skills that is rare in the non-profit world.” noted Monty Hargrove, former HHSCW Chair, Hospice Council member and Senior Vice President, Hargrove Wealth Management Group of Wells Fargo Advisors. “She had the passion for the mission of Hospice, the knowledge of and ability to develop and run the organization or ‘business’ if you will, and she understood that marketing and fund raising were critical to success and the board needed to reflect those talents. Throughout her tenure, her passion for the organization and mission never waned and her expertise in all the other areas continually improved. She never got in over her head with the organization but grew along with it, just far enough ahead of it to be effective and visionary. Indeed exceptional and rare.”

On June 24, 2015, hospice supporters gathered to wish Linda a “happy retirement” and to celebrate her more than 30 years of service. For many it will seem odd to walk into Hospice House and not be greeted by Linda, a warm smile on her face and a hot cup of Starbucks coffee in her hand. Bernice Todd, Hospice House volunteer, spoke for all when she said, “Linda’s remarkable passion has flowed through the organization on to all who have been involved with her. How grateful I am to have benefited from Linda’s leadership .”

A Farewell to the Matchmaker: Linda Osborn Retires By Laura Lawrence

Ask any Hospice House volunteer about Linda Osborn and the same words tumble out: professional, helpful, kind, considerate. Over and over again they comment on her almost magical ability to match volunteers with patients and families. Her extraordinary commitment to Hospice House and Support Care is rooted in a long history of advocacy for the organization.

Linda’s involvement with Hospice Support Care of Williamsburg began in 1991 as a member of an interdisciplinary team made up of healthcare professionals and hospice patient volunteers that met weekly to provide support to the Greater Williamsburg community. She was soon recruited to be on the Board of Directors and spent the next 15+ years referring patients, recruiting, training and supervising volunteers, and providing bereavement support. In November 2006 she fulfilled a long-held dream when she took over as Director of Patient Family Volunteer Service.

Over the next 8 1/2 years Linda trained approximately 110 volunteers, about 50 of whom remain actively involved, either as companions in patients’ homes or as volunteer companions at Hospice House. Linda attributes the high retention rate to the careful training and screening of volunteers and the attributes of those drawn to this type of work.

During her tenure, several hundred individuals were visited by a Hospice House volunteer either at home or at Hospice House. Countless other persons received support directly from Linda by email, phone or letter. Small acts of kindness on the part of Linda are remembered long after a loved one has gone. Bob Fichter, now an active volunteer himself, remembers with gratitude how Linda somehow found a volunteer who would sit with his wife on Sunday mornings at 7 a.m. so he could attend church services. He still smiles when he thinks of how seamlessly Linda responded to his request.

Before Linda retired in May she trained her replacement, Debra Maviglia Podish. Through their shared passion for Hospice House, individuals and their families in the Greater Williamsburg area will continue to receive the support they need, whether during serious illness, at end of life, or in the years of grieving.

A New Face for Patient Volunteer Services: Q&A with Debra Maviglia Podish Director of Patient Volunteer Family Services

What brought you to Williamsburg? I moved to Williamsburg from San Juan Capistrano, California in January of 2011. After many years of living in the southwest and western parts of the country, I relocated to Virginia to be closer to my family. My parents and my aunt both live in Williamsburg, and my sister and her family live just a couple of hours away in Northern VA. The small-town feel, tight-knit community and deep historical roots of Williamsburg have all made this a wonderful place to call Home.

How did you become involved in Hospice work? I graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work in 1994 and began my career in the field of geriatrics and senior care. I worked for several years in long term care and home health and was very drawn to the hospice philosophy when I worked with patients and families who were receiving hospice services. I started to volunteer at Hospice House in 2011 shortly after moving to Williamsburg. In 2013 I became a licensed Certified Nursing Assistant, and worked at Hospice House on a part time basis as a Care Companion. The experiences I have had walking alongside others who are facing illness or in the final phases of life, offering support and encouragement in the midst of pain, loss and grief, have been ones filled with meaning and purpose.

Is there one piece of advice Linda Osborn shared with you before her departure that has impacted you? I had the opportunity to mentor under Linda Osborn for several months prior to assuming this position. During that time Linda shared with me a wealth of knowledge drawn from her many years of experience working with hospice patients and their families. The most valuable advice I received was through listening to Linda’s conversations, and observing her always kind and soothing demeanor and reassuring presence in all of her interactions with patients, families and volunteers. Linda gave me an example to emulate, consistently demonstrating that the willingness to listen and meet others wherever they may happen to be on their journey through illness, death or grief, is perhaps the most precious gift we can offer.

Given that you've been on the job for 3 months, what are your thoughts about the patient volunteer program? Are there any programs or initiatives you’re particularly excited about? The Patient Volunteer program is central to the mission of HHSCW. I believe that the current program is a well- structured and vital part of this organization, made strong by the caliber and commitment of the 55+ trained direct service volunteers. I consider it a privilege to work every day with our patient volunteers who so generously offer their time, spending it in service and support to others. My focus at this time is to continue building upon the existing program and to expand our reach in the community.

While a significant number of people in Williamsburg recognize the name "Hospice House," many are still not aware of the range of services offered by HHSCW- both for patients facing life-limiting illnesses and for their caregivers. I have been exploring new ways to increase community awareness of the availability of our services, and also for ways to partner with other individuals, groups and organizations to better identify and reach out to those people and families who could benefit from our programs and volunteers. I am particularly excited about an initiative within the Patient Volunteer Program called STAR, which stands for Support for Treatment and Recovery. Originally developed by Linda Osborn, STAR is focused on providing in-home volunteers to patients and families who may not yet fall under hospice care services, but who are nevertheless facing the many challenges that arise from life limiting illnesses and the treatment and recovery process. Our STAR Patient Volunteers are available to provide support, companionship, transportation to medical appointments for patients who are undergoing medical treatment for terminal diagnosis, which simultaneously provides a break and respite for their caregivers. These same STAR volunteers who offer support for treatment and recovery often remain with patients and their families if they transition into hospice care, continuing the relationship throughout their final days, whether at Hospice House or at home.
