Smith: Hospice House’s New Executive Director How long have you and your family lived in Williamsburg? We moved to Williamsburg from the D.C. area in 1998 and have raised 3 children here. My husband grew up in Williamsburg -- his father has lived in Skipwith Farms for 6 decades. What do you like most about Williamsburg? Williamsburg has the perfect blend of com- munity and culture. I love that I can walk to DOG street to the farmers market in the morning, ride the ferry to go horseback riding in Smithfield and be back for a William & Mary Tribe game – all in one day! And, it is a great community of people from all around the world and right around the corner. Do you have any prior experience with hospice care or with Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg? I got involved with Hospice House almost the moment we moved “back” to Williamsburg from the D.C. area. I directed the campaign planning study and the campaign to build the house. With nearly 30 years of work with non-profits, I can honestly say I have never seen a more enthusiastic group of volunteers and a community more committed to the success of a project than those I met through the Campaign to Build Hospice House. It is a feeling I have never forgotten. And, I have enjoyed ongoing friendships and working relationships with many of those same volunteers through the years. What was it about Hospice House that made you want to volunteer your time and talent originally? Truly, I think it came from knowing on a personal level how difficult the death of a family member can be without hospice support. As a former member of the Board of Directors, how have you seen Hospice House evolve over the years? Hospice House has evolved in all the right ways over the years. More importantly, it has stayed the same in the right ways too! While the endowment has grown and volunteer support has expanded, the organization has stayed true to its mission. What work and life experiences do you feel prepared you for this new role as HHSCW Executive Director? I don’t think there is one specific path that ensures success in any role, but I do believe my decades of experience in nonprofit leadership and fundraising combined with my very personal experience with my mother’s death from cancer and our struggle to navigate her illness and death without the support of a Hospice House puts many things in perspective. I hope that I can put my work and life experience to positive use for HHSCW going forward. It is a wonderful opportunity and I am very grateful for this new challenge. What is your vision for Hospice House? To continue to support our community. How that will be defined must be informed through time on the ground working with my new team and the board. I am excited to get started! How will you measure your success in terms of your management of HHSCW a year or two from now? Stay tuned. I can’t wait to answer this question! What is one thing you would like the friends of HHSCW to know about you? That I cannot wait to get to know you! Please come see me at Hospice House. To reach Audrey, you can email [email protected] or call 757.253.1220. 3 Hospice House Says Farewell to Linda Taylor Stallings, Hospice House’s First Paid Executive Director By Carol Occhuizzo “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” John Quincy Adams For the last three decades, Linda Taylor Stallings has been that kind of leader for Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg. While serving as HHSCW’s Executive Director and for a time, as a volunteer on its Board of Directors, she has inspired countless others to dream, learn, and do as they work to meet the hospice mission: a goal of providing compassionate care for those facing the end of life and support for their loved ones. Linda began her career with Hospice in 1983, when hired as its first paid Executive Director. In those early years, hospice was a relatively new concept and was not fully understood by the medical community and the general public. Linda worked diligently with local and state hospice volunteers to promote awareness, provide education, and to increase the services available to all in the Williamsburg community. During this time, she also served as President of the statewide Virginia Hospice Association. After a brief move to Ohio, Linda returned to Williamsburg in 1994 and began her volunteer time with Hospice. She served on the Board of Directors from 1996 to 2002 during the capital campaign to build Hospice House.

  • Faded Memories
Faded Memories Life and Times of a Macedonian Villager 1 The COVER PAGE is a photograph of Lerin, the main township near the villages in which many of my family ancestors lived and regularly visited. 2 ACKNOWLEGEMENTS This publication is essentially an autobiography of the life and times of my father, John Christos Vellios, Jovan Risto Numeff. It records his recollections, the faded memories, passed down over the years, about his family ancestors and the times in which they lived. My father personally knew many of the people whom he introduces to his readers and was aware of more distant ancestors from listening to the stories passed on about them over the succeeding generations. His story therefore reinforces the integrity of oral history which has been used since ancient times, by various cultures, to recall the past in the absence of written, documentary evidence. This publication honours the memory of my father’s family ancestors and more generally acknowledges the resilience of the Macedonian people, who destined to live, seemingly forever under foreign subjugation, refused to deny their heritage in the face of intense political oppression and on-going cultural discrimination. This account of life and times of a Macedonian villager would not have been possible without the support and well-wishes of members of his family and friends whose own recollections have enriched my father’s narrative. I convey my deepest gratitude for the contributions my father’s brothers, my uncles Sam, Norm and Steve and to his nephew Phillip (dec), who so enthusiastically supported the publication of my father’s story and contributed on behalf of my father’s eldest brother Tom (dec) and his family.

I want to thank the many supporters of the Humane Society who made it possible to provide the shelter and care for these animals when there was nowhere else for them to go. Those who have been kind enough to make a donation to the shelter allow us to provide food, medical care, and supplies. The businesses who have supported the shelter in so many different ways are appreciated and deserve the support of the community. Without all of you the fates of these animals would have been very different. Please consider making a donation to the Humane Society during the holiday season to help insure there will always be a shelter for animals in need. A donation to HSJC is perfect for anyone on your gift list; they will receive a lovely holiday card advising them of the gift you made in their name. –Paul Becker From all at the shelter we wish you and your companionA Stormy animals Lifea very Happy Holiday Season. by Susan Johnson Paul Becker When Stormy first came to the shelter we weren’t sure if she was named for her looks (she’s a handsome short-haired, Russian Blue type) or her temperament.

  • Anthropology of Tobacco
Anthropology of Tobacco Tobacco has become one of the most widely used and traded commodities on the planet. Reflecting contemporary anthropological interest in material culture studies, Anthropology of Tobacco makes the plant the centre of its own contentious, global story in which, instead of a passive commodity, tobacco becomes a powerful player in a global adventure involving people, corporations and public health. Bringing together a range of perspectives from the social and natural sciences as well as the arts and humanities, Anthropology of Tobacco weaves stories together from a range of historical, cross-cultural and literary sources and empirical research. These combine with contemporary anthropological theories of agency and cross-species relationships to offer fresh perspectives on how an apparently humble plant has progressed to world domination, and the consequences of it having done so. It also considers what needs to happen if, as some public health advocates would have it, we are seriously to imagine ‘a world without tobacco’. This book presents students, scholars and practitioners in anthropology, public health and social policy with unique and multiple perspectives on tobacco-human relations. Andrew Russell is Associate Professor in Anthropology at Durham University, UK, where he is a member of the Anthropology of Health Research Group. His research and teaching spans the sciences, arts and humanities, and mixes both theoretical and applied aspects. He has conducted research in Nepal, the UK and worldwide.
