Bruce Perry, is Emeritus Professor of Medi May I firstof all express my thanks to the University of Bristol for cine in the University of Bristol. He has made a number of studies inviting me to give this lecture in honour of an enthusiastic of Bristol medical history, including The Bristol Royal Infirmary historian of Bristol, Frederick Creech Jones. A photograph of him 1904-1974, which was published in 1981, and he has contributed taken about 1920 on the _base of the Whitchurch Cross illustrates an earlier pamphlet to this series - The Voluntary Medical his interest in antiquities (see p. 2). His working life was spent Institutions of Bristol. with the Bristol Waterworks Company whose history he wrote on This pamphlet is basically the Frederick Creech Jones Memorial the occasion of their centenary in 1946. In the same year he Lecture which Professor Perry delivered in the University of published his book The Glory that was Bristol in which he recorded Bristol in 1983. It has unfortunately not been possible to re many historical Bristol buildings and deplored the loss of s� many produce here all the numerous illustrations which Professor Perry of them not only by enemy action but also by urban 'develop used on that occasion. -

Faded Memories Life and Times of a Macedonian Villager 1 The COVER PAGE is a photograph of Lerin, the main township near the villages in which many of my family ancestors lived and regularly visited. 2 ACKNOWLEGEMENTS This publication is essentially an autobiography of the life and times of my father, John Christos Vellios, Jovan Risto Numeff. It records his recollections, the faded memories, passed down over the years, about his family ancestors and the times in which they lived. My father personally knew many of the people whom he introduces to his readers and was aware of more distant ancestors from listening to the stories passed on about them over the succeeding generations. His story therefore reinforces the integrity of oral history which has been used since ancient times, by various cultures, to recall the past in the absence of written, documentary evidence. This publication honours the memory of my father’s family ancestors and more generally acknowledges the resilience of the Macedonian people, who destined to live, seemingly forever under foreign subjugation, refused to deny their heritage in the face of intense political oppression and on-going cultural discrimination. This account of life and times of a Macedonian villager would not have been possible without the support and well-wishes of members of his family and friends whose own recollections have enriched my father’s narrative. I convey my deepest gratitude for the contributions my father’s brothers, my uncles Sam, Norm and Steve and to his nephew Phillip (dec), who so enthusiastically supported the publication of my father’s story and contributed on behalf of my father’s eldest brother Tom (dec) and his family. -

A Bristol / Coalbrookdale Connection
BIAS JOURNAL No 19 1986 A Bristol-Coalbrookdale Peggy K Stembridge The fame of Coalbrookdale, a small tributary valley to the Severn, in Shropshire, is inevit- ably associated with Abraham Darby and his family because of Darby innovations and develop- ments in the iron industry there during the eighteenth century. This connection has been well chronicled in A Raistrick's Dynasty of Iron Founders:The Darbys and Coalbrookdale (1953), and some aspects have been explored in more precise detail by R A Mott in journal art- icles.(l) International prominence has also come to the district with the establishment of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum, with Abraham Darby's Old Blast Furnace as its core ('Birth- place of the Industrial Revolution’). More recently, however,some recognition has begun to come to members of the Goldney family of Bristol, who made both a financial and a practical con- tribution to the survival and development of the iron works at Coalbrookdale and to the expansion of the industry in the area. The Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron, opened in 1979, displays a larger-than-life likeness of Thomas Goldney III, and in the newly opened exhibition (September 1986) in Rosehill, one of the Darby houses nearby, his contribution and that of his father, Thomas Goldney II, is again acknowledged. It is impossible to give a complete narrative of the early Coalbrookdale venture because of the nature of the surviving records: business and legal papers, diverse, fragmentary, and dispersed in various collections. The purpose of this article is to give a brief account of the Bristol connection with Darby and Coalbrook- dale in the early years, and to consider parti- cularly the significant contribution of the two Thomas Goldneys, father and son, by making use of records and information relating to them and their association with the Darby ironworks of which Raistrick and Mott were unaware. -
