ANNUAL REPORT 2019 - 2020 Domestic Violence Program Rose’s Story When Rose came to Turning Point, she was depressed and beaten down and shut herself off from everyone. She only came out of her room when she had a scheduled meeting. She worked part-time when she entered the program and only went out when she had to work and then would retreat to her room again. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Rose lost her part-time job and as a result, she secluded herself to her room at the shelter even more.

Rose attended her case management meetings and started seeing Turning Point’s professional, trauma-focused counselor. Day-by-day, Rose began to open up and started coming out of her room.

Within two months, Rose found a full-time job that she truly enjoyed, and she stated that the kindness showed to her at the shelter and now at work was unlike anything she had ever experienced.

Rose endured abuse all of her life, but she was now coming out of her shell and was blossoming. She told shelter staff, “This is the first time in my life that I feel that I have potential, I am important and worthy of being loved.” Within three months, Rose found a safe home of her own and was excited about her future for the first time in her life. Turning Point was able to provide Rose with all the household furnishings she needed and financial assistance for her to begin again in her own safe, violence-free home.

Now Rose not only has her independence and a successful job, but she is also taking college courses to continue her education. In Rose’s words, “I had never in a million years imagined that I would be so blessed. Turning Point will always have a special place in my heart, and I hope to help others one day, the way Turning Point has helped me.”

Finding Her Voice A woman called our crisis line during our state’s shelter-in-place order. She found Turning Point’s Sexual Assault Resource Center through a friend who had previously received services. The caller disclosed she had been regularly abused by a family member throughout her childhood and, as is common, she had only recently started having those memories resurface. The vivid flashbacks she had started experiencing had caused immense stress to her personally and in her relationships.

Our Victim Advocate was able to offer remote advocacy services, normalize her feelings, assess her needs, and connect her to our professional counselor. During the 30-day follow-up call, the woman confirmed that she had attended several counseling sessions, felt connected to the counselor, and was feeling hopeful for the future. The woman disclosed that her teenager who was experiencing difficulties (unrelated to sexual assault) was so encouraged by her mom’s progress, that the teenager felt empowered to start her own counseling.

Our client is on her healing journey and is excited to volunteer for Turning Point to impact the lives of survivors like her.

Finding Light

A referral was made by law enforcement to Turning Point’s Tree House Children’s Advocacy Center for a group of siblings whose mother was a victim of homicide. The children had all been witnesses to the crime.

Our Family Advocate provided interpreter resources for the father and family members. The father needed guidance with handling the next steps towards coping with trauma and providing healing for his children. A referral was provided to a counseling agency for the family.

The family moved out of their home and was provided with new beds, clothing, and housewares from Turning Point's Second Chance stores. The father also needed additional assistance with government documents and Turning Point staff was able to provide that assistance through court staff collaboration. The Tree House was also able to provide Thanksgiving meals and Christmas presents for the family, providing some joy for the family during an incredibly dark time.

Dear friends,

2020 has certainly thrown many curve balls at us all, and as an organization on the front lines of addressing pervasive issues that affect so many in our community, our role in bringing healing, justice and freedom to those we serve has an even more profound meaning given the unimaginable circumstances so many abuse victims have found themselves in. Isolation and financial hardship contribute significantly to an increase in violence and abuse in the home, the perpetration of violence against women has historically always increased during times of national and global crises, and the vital avenue for disclosure of abuse for our children has been significantly impacted by school closures. And while the number of clients we’re seeing has increased, we’re being told to anticipate an even greater surge in clients, once children are back in school and domestic violence and sexual assault survivors have the freedom and safety they need to make their next move to seek support and healing.

Our services have gone uninterrupted during this health crisis. Our team is stronger than ever, and I’m not sure I’ve ever witnessed a more selfless group of individuals who know the impact of their work and who have made our organization and our clients their top priority, even when uncertainty, fear and remote working have been the order of the day. Our focus has been and will remain on serving those who need us while keeping our clients and team safe and healthy.

The support from our community has been humbling and overwhelming. From supply donations to fundraisers to dinner deliveries…our community has come through time and again to ensure we have what we need. But we can’t slow down now. It will take all of us working together to tackle the ongoing crisis that violence and abuse presents to our neighbors, our friends, our coworkers and our family. This isn’t a “they” issue. This is an “us” issue. Never underestimate the role you can have in making our community a better place, and the difference you can make in the lives of so many who are waiting to emerge from the darkness that life’s circumstances has put them in.

As always, thank you. Thank you from our team, thank you from our clients, thank you from our community. We are so very grateful for your support. Warm Regards, Jessie Lindberg Executive Director

Our Second Chance stores are a critical piece of our agency’s overall strength.

So much has changed in 2020, and with so much continued uncertainty, our Second Chance stores are more critical than ever to the financial health and stability of our organization.

The Second Chance stores provide a significant portion of our operating revenue, giving us a more diverse revenue stream that allows us to be less reliant on grants and fundraisers. In addition, our stores provide essential items such as clothing, household items, furniture and more to the families we serve, so they can continue their healing journey without having to worry about some of their most basic needs.

Our community never ceases to amaze us with donations steadily coming into the stores every day, and our store customers love that no matter how often they shop, it’s never the same store twice and they will always find something amazing!

Whether you’re cleaning out your closets and want to make sure that your donations will positively impact someone in need, or you’re looking for affordable treasures, Second Chance will not disappoint! Thank you for your support!

Volunteers play a critical role in the success of our stores. We are blessed to have a steady flow of donations every day, but with high donation levels comes tiring work to sort through everything and get it sale-ready. Please call 704-283-9150 if you'd like to join our amazing team of store volunteers.
