The sudden appearance of his father, who was long presumed dead, plunges Michael into an existential crisis. After his father leaves, Michael can’t return to his life as a German. Michael and his boss and best friend Franz feel at home in Berlin’s hip restaurants, bars and clubs. There is seemingly no difference between them, but Michael, who emigrated from Poland after the death of his mother several years ago, still pays extra attention to his accent. Michael is thrown into turmoil when a run-down Polish bohemian shows up on his doorstep and claims to be his father.

It was the most spectacular event of the “Autumn of Nations”. It was also a very fitting symbol – a metaphor – for the fall of communism’s totalitarian system and for the reunification of Europe. Yet, the bringing down of the Berlin Wall was merely the final stage of a process that had been initiated nearly ten years earlier at the Gdansk Shipyards. In August 1980, as the result of a weeks-long workers’ strike, the ruling Polish United Workers Party agreed to the legalization of Solidarity, the first independent labour union in that part of Europe controlled by the Soviet Union. Solidarity was the first step towards freedom in the 40 years since the Red Army installed communist regimes throughout the Central European countries it had “liberated” during the war.

English language. doi: 10.1386/ncin.7.3.237/1 Our own courtyard: Post-traumatic Polish cinema Anna Misiak University College Falmouth Abstract Keywords This article probes contemporary Polish cinema, examining it through the socio- Polish cinema logical theory of cultural trauma. The majority of post-1989 Polish films corre- cultural trauma late with national ‘tragic narratives’ that emphasize the negative social effects of Polish film the fairly recent systemic transformation. The author chooses to analyse two post-communist films (The Wedding (2004) and The Debt (1999)) as her case studies. Both cinema productions received many awards in the home country. To Polish critics, the two post-traumatic cinema films demonstrated a significant achievement of the country’s film industry that tragic narrative should be capable of exporting and promoting Polish culture in the international world cinema arena. Yet, the worldwide success proved to be beyond the reach of the directors and with only a few honourable mentions and special jury awards, they won no major trophies outside Poland. Going straight to DVD, The Debt has never been widely released in the cinemas either in the United Kingdom or in the United States, while The Wedding opened with a three-year delay in the United Kingdom in a few cinemas only, but there has not been an international DVD release as yet. Made at crucial moments for the political and social history of the country, both films depict ethically dislocated and confused post-traumatic characters and both reverberate the post-1989 collective Polish experience.

Two brothers discover the secret and are forced to revise their perception of their father, their entire family and the history of their nation. SYNOPSIS Franek and Józek Kalina are brothers, both born at the end of the 1950s. Their father was a poor farmer in the northeastern reaches of central Poland. In the early 1980s Franek, feeling poverty and conscription, emigrates to the United States. His family disapprove of his decision and they are part on bad terms. Years later, Franek is still so sore that he refuses to come to his parents' funerals. This further fuels the animosity between the brothers, and they break off all ties with each other. In 2005, Józek's wife shows up in the States with her kids. She doesn't want to tell Franek what made her leave her husband. Franek decides to go back to his native village and learn more about his brother's present circumstances. He is given a cool welcome. Old grudges resurface: Franek is accused of abandoning the farm when it needed him and of not attending his parents' funerals. Józek will not say why his wife and children left him. Within a matter of days Franek realizes that Józek is disliked in the village, especially by the young priest and the old police chief.

Now, seventeen DAYS later, it’s happening. CentEast, which some of you know and respect, has become history. Creative Europe Media rejected our application after 12 years of continuous support. We were told that our project is not ‘innovative’ enough. In fact, ‘creative’ applications, reporting, and accounting, has never been our forte. When we organised the first edition of Warsaw Screenings in 2000, we were the first to make a selection of Polish films and to present them, with English subtitles, to a group of foreign professionals. Thanks to our efforts, dozens of Polish films found their way to the world’s major festivals, to sales agents and, as a result, to international distribution. Seventeen years later, in cooperation with the Polish Film Institute, we organise the first edition of Pitch & Meet, which we hope will develop into a full scale co-production market. We are delighted that you have decided to come to Warsaw to attend WID. Welcome! Stefan Laudyn, general manager, Warsaw Film Foundation Małgorzata Dochniak, head of Warsaw Industry Days 3

  • Scripteast 14 Edition
XIVXIV Strip your script. Make it better. 2020 We will take it worldwide. Each May, we gather in Cannes to celebrate the scriptwriters who have Violetta Kamińska ScripTeast participated in ScripTeast over the past year and award the best of their scripts Managing Director the Krzysztof Kieślowski ScripTeast Award at a ceremony by the sea. Of course this year circumstances dictate that we must put on our cocktail attire and sip our champagne at home instead. It is in the nature of creativity to persevere, and with it, our industry perseveres too. We must move forward just as surely as we must make films – the call of creativity cannot be denied. And so we move onwards, with our support for the best CEE writers, providing them with the wisest advice and expertise of top international professionals. Our goal is, as always, to help scriptwriters navigate the industry, never give up, and make films for the burgeoning global audience. So far, 43 of these films Izabela Wójcik have been made to box office and critical acclaim, with just the most recent Independent Film Foundation, Director success being Vaclav Marhoul’s “The Painted Bird,” the story of which, in itself, is a great lesson in perseverance. Fully polished through hard work with the help of our distinguished advisors, we present to you here 11 of the best projects and authors from this part of Europe, amongst which we hope you might find the next great internationally acclaimed discovery. We are very grateful to the diverse group of professionals who accept our invitation to be Creative Advisers each year, our Heads of Studies, Tom Abrams and Christian Routh, and to all the institutions who have been supporting ScripTeast over Dariusz Jabłoński ScripTeast the years.
