In line with this tradition, in this special English language issue, we present a selection of articles published in “Kino” in the last year. They include reviews, interviews, as well as articles concerning the history of Polish cinema and opinion columns. However, we focus on the most interesting Polish feature films (of which 41 have been made there between the beginning of 2007 and May 2008), as well as documentary and animated films of the last year. Some of them could be seen at various international festivals, where they received numerous awards. The most prestigious award, an Oscar, came to the short animated film, “Peter and the Wolf”, which is a British-Polish co-production, directed by Suzie Templeton and made in the Studio Se-Ma-For in Łódź. On the other hand, the most awarded Polish film was “Tricks” by Andrzej Jakimowski, which till April 2008 received 12 awards, including at the festivals in Gdynia, Venice, Tokyo, Mannheim, Sao Paulo and Miami. However, what counts more than awards is the fact that Polish viewers have regained pleasure in watching Polish films. -

Phone: 624-5707 General Course Description The course presents contemporary Polish cinema from 1945 to the present. Concepts will be studied in their historical, political, philosophical, and aesthetic perspective. We will examine the important national themes in modern Polish cinema, relating them to the history of Poland and Eastern Europe. The main trends (schools, movements) in Polish cinema will be examined such as the so-called PolishSchool and the Cinema of Moral Concern. The works of most important modern Polish film-makers will be examined, including the works of Andrzej Wajda, Andrzej Munk, Agnieszka Holland, Roman Polanski, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Wladyslaw Pasikowski, Leszek Wosiewicz, and Ryszard Bugajski. Films to be examined may be divided into three general groups 1. Films representing post-war history and, more specifically, films covering important social and political transformations, but made after the fact. These are sometimes called revisionist films in search of historical truth, previously distorted by political ideology. 2. Films dealing with World War II. We will look at different ways in which the war is treated by film-makers over the course of the post-war period. 3. The final group of films is chosen purely on the basis of artistic merit. The role of film as an art form will be examined during the different periods of the post-World-War-Two era. -

Almost from the beginning of its existence films have been de- picting storms of historic changes. Why does the situation look like that? The answer could be either obvious or not easy at all. At first, it is worth to realize that Polish history was cruel, painful, dramatic and complicated, which is of course not a convincing, final argument. Many countries expe- rienced cruelty of fate, were forced to struggle for their independence, suf- fered from inconveniences of wars. But expectations and the role attributed to fine arts deeply rooted in national variant of romanticism are typically “Polish”. Creating and upholding national identity, which for years was in danger of disappearing, seems to be considered as an act of courage and the way of manifesting patriotism. As a result, one of the main aims of literature, painting and then, from the beginning of 20th century, cinema was to support “spirit of Polish character”. Paradoxically, or maybe as a con- sequence of “being on duty”, film directors quite often rebel against roman- tic paradigm and instead of paying tribute to the motherland by guarding national unity, they were trying to deconstruct and show the weakness of national mythology, which was glorifying lonely and utopian heroism of individuals. As a result, film directors, whose works will be discussed as case studies, were in some respect the heirs of literary heritage of romanticism aware of its power and long lasting influence. -

MAREK MILLER, PIOTR WOJCIECHOWSKI Laboratory of Reportage: An Outline of Research Issues Abstract The paper aims to present the outline of the research conducted by the Laboratory of Reportage. The Laboratory represents a place of journalistic experimentations and explorations. The experimentations consist of collective work on texts, multimedia narration, penetrating the area between journalism and literature. The research is directed towards scientific and artistic knowledge. The paper portrays both the history and the achievements of the Laboratory of Reportage and the method it employs. Keywords: reportage, documentary novel, polyphony, multimedia, oral history The Laboratory of Reportage operating within the Faculty of Journalism, Information and Book Studies of the University of Warsaw is a centre for research, experimentation and journalistic exploration as well as the place of practical didactic activities. We consider reportage as the fullest form of journalistic expression. Reportage, as a particularly open genre, embraces elements of interview, column and essay. It is close to non-fiction literature and film documentary. For a journalist willing to dig deeper into their knowledge it offers fundamental experience. That is why the Laboratory of Reportage was established. The field of the Laboratory’s experimentation and research covers: – collective work on text; – multimedia angle on material; – penetrating the area between journalism and creative writing, journalism and screenwriting, journalism and stage writing. However, reportage remains the base. The belief in the unique role of reportage within journalistic genres stems from our practice and experience. INTRODUCTION “We were taught as children”—I was told by a seventy- year-old Pole—“that we Poles never harmed anyone. A partial abandonment of this morally comfortable position is very, very difficult for me.” —Helga Hirsch, a German journalist, in Polityka, 24 February 2001 HE COMPLEX and often acrimonious debate about the charac- ter and significance of the massacre of the Jewish population of T the small Polish town of Jedwabne in the summer of 1941—a debate provoked by the publication of Jan Gross’s Sa˛siedzi: Historia za- głady z˙ydowskiego miasteczka (Sejny, 2000) and its English translation Neighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne, Poland (Princeton, 2001)—is part of a much wider argument about the totali- tarian experience of Europe in the twentieth century. This controversy reflects the growing preoccupation with the issue of collective memory, which Henri Rousso has characterized as a central “value” reflecting the spirit of our time.1 One key element in the understanding of collec- tive memory is the “dark past” of nations—those aspects of the na- tional past that provoke shame, guilt, and regret; this past needs to be integrated into the national collective identity, which itself is continu- ally being reformulated.2 In this sense, memory has to be understood as a public discourse that helps to build group identity and is inevita- bly entangled in a relationship of mutual dependence with other iden- tity-building processes. -

The establishment of Opolski University in 1994 was the result of efforts and intellectual achievements of several generations of Opolski Silesia's inhabitants, who desired to have the highest-rank scholarly and educational institution in the European civilisation, the university. Opolski University invokes the tradition related to the attempts to create a Piast university by Duke George II of Brieg in Brzeg in the 16th century and by Prince Charles Habsburg in Nysa in the 17th century. It also looks back to the tradition of the 19th-century Landwirtschaftliche Akademie Proskau (Agricultural Academy of Prószków, 1847-1881) in the vicinity of Opole. It was, however, the combination of two local institutions of higher learning that led to the creation of Opolski University, namely, Wyższa Szkoła Pedagogiczna im. Powstańców Śląskich (Higher School of Pedagogy named after Silesian Insurgents) with its 44-year history (1950-1994), one of the best Polish teachers' colleges, and the local branch of Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski (Catholic University of Lublin) which had existed here since 1981 and was based on the several decades of experience of Wyższe Seminarium Duchowne (Higher Seminary) in Nysa with its academic staff made up of the members of the former Faculty of Theology at Uniwersytet Jana Kazimierza (John Casimir University in Lvov). Katowice –our city POLSKA Warszawa Katowice The Upper Silesia region was called ‘a jewel in the crown’ in one of the films made by Kazimierz Kutz, an outstanding Polish director. For centuries, this important and attractive region has been heavily urbanized and the most industrialized part of Poland due to natural conditions favourable for coal mining and metallurgy. Katowice, the capital of Upper Silesia, with a population of 323,200, is now one of the greatest economic, scientific, cultural, political and administrative centre in Poland. Katowice has become a place of substantial investment: transport routes, many banks, hotels, office buildings, the culture and science centres have been built here in recent times. Katowice evolved from a rural settlement into a mining and metallurgical industry centre in the early 19th century. The dynamic growth of Katowice, which was granted municipal rights in 1865, is reflected in the richly varied architecture. The buildings which have survived until today represent a variety of styles, from the early 16th century wooden Church of St.Michael Archangel, through the examples of Neo-Gothic, Neo-Romanesque, eclecticism, Art Nouveau, functionalism and constructivism of the inter-war period, to the modern architecture of the latest days. A visit to the Museum of History of Katowice provides an interesting insight into the history of the region, its people, customs and traditions.
