Xiv Workshop the Art of Film Editing INTERNATIONAL co- nancing Projektco- nanced współfinansuje by City of m.st.W Warsawarszawa ORGANISER WARSAW SUBSIDIES FILM FOUNDATION SPONSORS AND PARTNERS MEDIA PARTNERS TELEWIZJA WARSAW FILM FOUNDATION MEDIA PARTNERS FILMNEWEUROPE.COM 2 Introduction Warsaw, October 19th, 2017 Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Friends, Welcome to Warsaw Industry Days, which is possibly the fastest organised film industry event ever, as the Polish Film Institute announced their funding decision October 2nd. Now, seventeen DAYS later, it’s happening. CentEast, which some of you know and respect, has become history. Creative Europe Media rejected our application after 12 years of continuous support. We were told that our project is not ‘innovative’ enough. In fact, ‘creative’ applications, reporting, and accounting, has never been our forte. When we organised the first edition of Warsaw Screenings in 2000, we were the first to make a selection of Polish films and to present them, with English subtitles, to a group of foreign professionals. Thanks to our efforts, dozens of Polish films found their way to the world’s major festivals, to sales agents and, as a result, to international distribution. Seventeen years later, in cooperation with the Polish Film Institute, we organise the first edition of Pitch & Meet, which we hope will develop into a full scale co-production market. We are delighted that you have decided to come to Warsaw to attend WID. Welcome! When a panicked Benedictine nun appears at the clinic begging Mathilde to follow her back to the convent, what she finds there is shocking: a holy sister about to give birth and several more in advanced stages of pregnancy. A non-believer, Mathilde enters the sisters’ fiercely private world, dictated by the rituals of their order and the strict Rev. Mother (Agata Kulesza, Ida). Fearing the shame of exposure, the hostility of the occupying Soviet troops and local Polish communists and while facing an unprecedented crisis of faith, the nuns increasingly turn to Mathilde as their beliefs and traditions clash with harsh realities.

It was the most spectacular event of the “Autumn of Nations”. It was also a very fitting symbol – a metaphor – for the fall of communism’s totalitarian system and for the reunification of Europe. Yet, the bringing down of the Berlin Wall was merely the final stage of a process that had been initiated nearly ten years earlier at the Gdansk Shipyards. In August 1980, as the result of a weeks-long workers’ strike, the ruling Polish United Workers Party agreed to the legalization of Solidarity, the first independent labour union in that part of Europe controlled by the Soviet Union. Solidarity was the first step towards freedom in the 40 years since the Red Army installed communist regimes throughout the Central European countries it had “liberated” during the war.

ABOUT PAPUSZA Papusza is based on the true story of the Roma poet Papusza and the Polish poet Jerzy Ficowski, who discovered her great talent. Papusza was the first and only Roma woman who put her poems into writing and even published them. By doing so, she confronted the traditional female’s role in her community and as a result, she and her family were banished. It is a story of a gifted woman who wants to preserve her culture with words and has to pay a painful price for that decision. When a person is young, In heart and hope, The world opens easily With any kind of key. (Papusza) LOGLINE True story of Papusza - the first Roma woman who put her poems into writing and published them, and therefore confronted the traditional female image in the gypsy community. SYNOPSIS True story of Papusza - the first Roma woman who put her poems into writing and published them, and therefore confronted the traditional female image in the gypsy community. The film follows Papusza’s life from birth to old age: arranged marriage as a small girl, her life in a gypsy tabor before, during and after second world war, then forced settlement in communist Poland and urban life in poverty. Her meeting with the Polish poet Jerzy Ficowski, who discovered her great talent for poetry and published her works led to a tragic paradox: a famous poet was living in poverty, rejected by the Roma community, for betraying their secrets. 2 POLISH CINEMA of DIGITALLY RESTORED MASTERPIECES MASTERPIECES RESTORED DIGITALLY CLASSICS INTRODUCTION Since the Polish Film School cinema has become the exceptional trademark of Polish culture. Throughout the years behind the Iron Curtain Polish filmmakers proved many times that despite the isolation they were still the citizens of the world, who significantly contributed to the discussion of its condition through their output. Today their films are an important part of Polish culture. For years, they have been shaping our national identity, raising important existential questions, and uniting us around certain values. They have also brought on the social, political and moral changes and encouraged us to act. We owe them successes at international film festivals as well as rendering the Polish school of cinematographers famous. Polish films have many admirers around the world and thanks to the digital restoration the spectators can watch the most acclaimed ones in their best quality on HD TV, in cinemas as well as on DVDs and Blu-rays. 3 DIGITALLY RESTORED of POLISH CINEMA MASTERPIECES of POLISH CINEMA CLASSICS Antczak Jerzy 12 The Lady of the Camellias / Dama Kameliowa 13 Nights and Days / Noce i dnie Bajon Filip 14 Aria for an Athlete / Aria dla atlety Bareja Stanisław 15 A Bunet Will Call / Brunet wieczorową porą 16 Teddy Bear / Miś 17 There’s No Place Like Home / Nie ma róży bez ognia 18 Wanted: Male or Female / Poszukiwany, poszukiwana 19 What Can You Do to Me If You Catch Me / Co mi zrobisz, jak mnie złapiesz DIGITALLY RESTORED
