Yashwantrao Chavan

MESSAGE The birth centenary of Shri Yashwantrao Chavan (1913 - 1984) was celebrated last year in a befitting manner by the Government of Maharashtra and the Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan, Mumbai. It was an acknowledgement of his stellar contribution as first Chief Minister to the making of modern Maharashtra, as a State with progressive policies and a decentralized democratic set up of administration.

In November, 1962, he became the Defence Minister in the aftermath of the India-China conflict. He worked hard to restore the morale of the armed forces and to enhance his strength through modern weapons, better equipment, organisational changes and a harmonious relationship with the armed forces. The efforts paid off in the India-Pakistan conflict in 1965. Subsequently, he held the high offices of Union Home Minister, Union Finance Minister and Foreign Minister of India. In 1979, he became the Deputy Prime Minister of India. He was a freedom fighter, effective parliamentarian and an astute administrator. He was a connoisseur of fine arts, a great lover of books and an author of acknowledged literary merit. He was very fond of watching good , plays and stage performances of folk-art. The 'Yashwant' International Festival is a tribute to the outstanding personay of Yashwantrao Chavan.

Dr. Jabbar Patel Director - 6th YIFF MESSAGE We are pleased to present the 6th Yashwant International Film Festival jointly organized by the Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishtan and the Pune Film Foundation. It makes me very happy to see the festival growing and more and more film buffs attending the festival and enjoying a variety of films that we have selected for them. This year, we are presenting the Distinguished Award for Outstanding Contribution to Ms. Waheeda Rehman - the most beautiful actress who has astounded audiences with her stupendous acting in various genres of films. She represents a uniquely creative era in Indian cinema when she worked with great filmmakers like and Guru Dutt. Smita Patil became the face of a radically different new Indian cinema of the 1970s and 1980s, acting under directors like Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani, G. Aravindan, and Satyajit Ray, to name just a few. To commemorate Smita Patil's 60th anniversary, YIFF has decided to organize the Smita Patil memorial lecture. Her memory will always be with us and we hope that naming the lecture after her will rekindle aspects of her cinematic contribution in the minds of people from the older as well as younger generations.
