As of November, the market share for Korean films in the domestic market stood at 55 percent, which indicates that the yearly market share of Korean films will be over 50 percent for the third year in a row. In the international arena as well, Korean films were invited to major international film festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Locarno, and San Sebastian and received a warm reception from critics and audiences. It is often said that the current prosperity of Korean cinema is due to the strong commitment and policies introduced by the KIM Dae-joong government in 1999 to promote Korean films.

In a moment of desperation, he dumps the body in the coffin of his newly deceased mother. A few days later, Gun-soo flips through a listing of open cases and finds his accident victim. His colleague is on the accident case and is slowly making progress. Making matters worse, a witness steps forward, a detective named Park. For a reason unclear to Gun-soo, Park wants the body. Without another choice to depend on, Gun-soo digs his mother's grave and retrieves the body, only to find gunshot wounds on it. As Park's threats become more vicious and hits closer to home, Gun-soo decides to face Park head-on once and for all. About the Film Cinematographer KIM Tae-sung whose work on War of the Arrows garnered him much attention and accolades, captured raw intensity between the two leads in A Hard Day. KIM adjusted his angles depending on the circumstances provided by the locale rather than relying on a set of camera movements. In addition, The Suspect’s stunt coordinator, OH Se-young, whose extreme action sequences made him famous was an asset to the production of A Hard Day.

  • Coastal Climate Stories Documentary
Fall 2019 Sustainability Grant Proposal Coastal Climate Stories Fellowship Documentary Initiative Project Leader: Sean Jackson Amount Requested $2,876 Overview and Goals: During the Spring of 2019 I was a recipient of the first Paul Smith’s Climate Fellowship grant. The focal point of the fellowship was to work in conjunction with the climate stories project to collect interviews pertaining to the implications of climate change on different social and environmental factors through the lived realities of interviews subjects. The Climate Fellowship was granted on the grounds of a loose project proposal which I would later work to develop and hone over the course of the Spring 2019 semester. My initial project proposal was to work within the confines of the coastal communities travelling along the East Coast of the United States to collect climate stories along this gradient to see if we noticed any particular trends as our body of interviews grew. Because this was the first year of the program, output goals were relatively flexible. The primary objective for final products was to be in the form of interview transcripts and reflective writings. This was an adequate outlet for much of what the fellowship was trying to capture but was largely confined by a lack of a distributable medium. For this reason, I wanted to build upon the fellowship’s potential reach in order to make sure that these important stories pertaining to climate change were not just being collected, but also shared, and discussed. The objective of the climate stories project is to develop a comprehensive body of climate change related stories and in doing so create a network of individuals to work towards a more sustainable future.

  • Cultural Production in Transnational Culture: an Analysis of Cultural Creators in the Korean Wave
International Journal of Communication 15(2021), 1810–1835 1932–8036/20210005 Cultural Production in Transnational Culture: An Analysis of Cultural Creators in the Korean Wave DAL YONG JIN1 Simon Fraser University, Canada By employing cultural production approaches in conjunction with the global cultural economy, this article attempts to determine the primary characteristics of the rapid growth of local cultural industries and the global penetration of Korean cultural content. It documents major creators and their products that are received in many countries to identify who they are and what the major cultural products are. It also investigates power relations between cultural creators and the surrounding sociocultural and political milieu, discussing how cultural creators develop local popular culture toward the global cultural markets. I found that cultural creators emphasize the importance of cultural identity to appeal to global audiences as well as local audiences instead of emphasizing solely hybridization. Keywords: cultural production, Hallyu, cultural creators, transnational culture Since the early 2010s, the Korean Wave (Hallyu in Korean) has become globally popular, and media scholars (Han, 2017; T. J. Yoon & Kang, 2017) have paid attention to the recent growth of Hallyu in many parts of the world. Although the influence of Western culture has continued in the Korean cultural market as well as elsewhere, local cultural industries have expanded the exportation of their popular culture to several regions in both the Global South and the Global North. Social media have especially played a major role in disseminating Korean culture (Huang, 2017; Jin & Yoon, 2016), and Korean popular culture is arguably reaching almost every corner of the world.

  • Hybrid Korean Screen Cultures in the Mid-2000S Films a Bold Family (2005), Over the Border (2006), and Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005)
Concentric: Literary and Cultural Studies 46.2 September 2020: 217-245 DOI: 10.6240/concentric.lit.202009_46(2).0010 The North on Southern Screens: Hybrid Korean Screen Cultures in the Mid-2000s Films A Bold Family (2005), Over the Border (2006), and Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005) Bonnie Tilland East Asia International College Yonsei University Mirae Campus, Korea Abstract South Korean films that address North Korean themes have changed in the decades since South Korea’s democratization. Whereas films in the 1990s presented North Koreans as villains, by the 2000s most films took a more nuanced approach, presenting North Koreans as complex people with the potential to adapt in South Korean society. This paper analyzes three films from the mid-2000s dealing with North Korean issues (A Bold Family [2005], Over the Border [2006], and Welcome to Dongmakgol [2005]) in the context of the South Korean political landscape and North-South relations at the time. The paper argues that mid-2000s films represent a transitional point in the filmic depiction of North Koreans in South Korean film, opening up possibilities of hybridity in Korean identity. These films exhibit an almost ethnographic impulse to document everyday life, and as such contribute broadly to a visual anthropology of North-South Korean relations.
